kINGDOWN STUDENTS COMPLETE THEIR DUkE Of EDINBURGH GOLD ExPEDITION IN NORWAY

During July and August, ten students from Kingdown School departed the rainy weather of England to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Expedition by canoeing 81 miles down the Telemark Canal in Norway from Ulefoss to Dalen. The expedition was a culmination of months of planning and fundraising to pay for the expedition which was led by Far Frontiers.

The Team completed a practice expedition canoeing down the river Wye from Hereford to Monmouth between 1-3 July.

As well as some serious canoeing skills workshops held at the Cotswold waterpark, some hardened members of the team also paddled from Devizes to Reading and back to help raise money for the trip (Will, Joe and Ed). The Telemark expedition was a planned four-day expedition where individuals were VHOIVXI¿FLHQWDQGFDQRHVZHUHODGHQZLWKDOOtheir personal clothing, tents and food. For the duration, all this has to be packed into canoes.

The team wild camped during the expedition on the banks of the pristine fjord on route.

We spent days looking for wild moose and beaver but they were very shy and only one beaver showed its head.

All participants completed the expedition and were a credit to themselves, their school and families.

The expedition assessor (Doug Clark) said “I was highly impressed with the team work and ability of all the participants. They worked very well together and looked after each other during the expedition”.

HAMLET REVIEW

On 7th July, a group of budding Shakespearians made their way to the Globe Theatre in London to watch an atmospheric and authentic production of ‘Hamlet’ in the heart of Shakespeare’s plays’ home.

$UULYLQJDWWKH*OREHZHFRXOGQ¶WKHOSEXWPDUYHODWWKHEXLOGLQJDPDJQL¿FHQWUHFRQVWUXFWLRQof authentic craftsmanship whisking us all back to the Jacobean period. The stunning performances by the extremely talented Joshua McGuire playing Hamlet gave a new freshness and spontaneity to his soliloquies, and Jade Anouka as Ophelia brought the production to life.

The production had many interesting and unique twists on Shakespeare’s infamous tragedy: a play inside the play sequence had fantastic tempo and originality and several humorous moments lightened the serious ambience enrobing the theatre. The acting was fabulous and atmosphere electric – we were left hardly noticing our aching legs after standing for three hours!
