No; when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there, so that, when your host comes, he may say, “My friend, move up higher.” In that way, everyone with you at the table will see you honoured. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the man who humbles himself will be exalted.’ Jesus was a person who tended to disrupt the thinking of the time. Dear Children, Staff and Families,

In this week’s Gospel, we are reminded of the importance to be humble.

On a sabbath day Jesus had gone for a meal to the house of one of the leading  Pharisees; and they watched him closely. He then told the guests a parable, because he had noticed how they picked the places of honour. He said this, ‘When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take your seat in the place of honour. A more distinguished person than you may have been invited, and the person who invited you both may come and say, “Give up your place to this man.” And then, to your embarrassment, you would have to go and take the lowest place. No; when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there, so that, when your host comes, he may say, “My friend, move up higher.” In that way, everyone with you at the table will see you honoured. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the man who humbles himself will be exalted.’

Jesus was a person who tended to disrupt the thinking of the time. He would say if you are going to have a party, don’t invite the in-crowd, invite the poor and marginalised. Every day we meet people who are in greater need than ourselves. For ourselves, we often expect respect and care from others…. In turn, what do we offer others? We say to the children: consider doing a random act of kindness for another person, perhaps someone whom we do not know well.

Daily Physical Fitness at Holy Family

We have been speaking at Staff Meeting about the direct correlation between health/fitness and student’s success in learning. Consequently, you will become aware that as we enjoy the better weather brought by Spring the children will be engaging in some activities to increase their fitness in appropriate ways.

I have noticed that the physical aptitude of the children has improved in recent times. I think there are various reasons including an increased

community awareness of the need for good nutrition. Another reason is the emerging plethora of sporting opportunities in the community and in the school.

We are very proud of the high level of attainment among children in our school in a variety of sports. I take a close interest in the commitment of our children as they address their sporting goals.

Last week Liam Stam attended the School Sports Australia National Tournament in Canberra where he represented SA and our school. Liam’s team played 7 games over 5 days and attended an excursion to the Australian Institute of Sport. South Australia finished second overall and Liam was the leading SA goal scorer for the tournament. This was a wonderful step forward for Liam as a soccer player and a person. Well done Liam!

The Changing Face of Holy Family

We believe that our children deserve the very best facilities for their education here at Holy Family. Accordingly, we always have in place a rigorous program of capital development to enhance these facilities.

One of the projects underway at the moment is the construction of Netball and Basketball Courts in Grevillia Park at the rear of the school between Banksia and Carnation Courts. These facilities will provide fantastic access for our students’ exercise and physical education every day. (See the map below showing the position of the courts) The project will also provide a Car Park to enable children to be dropped off to the school and/or ELC.

There are many other projects in the pipeline.

TOUCH FOOTBALLWhat an amazing day at Park 17 today in Adelaide. We took 7 teams (54 students) ranging from Years 3-6 to the touch football carnival.

Like previous carnivals this year our students are stellar stand outs, conducting themselves in an outstanding manner. Their hard work during PE lessons paid off rewarding the teams with numerous wins and minimal losses. Although it was the spirit and positive praise that was the standout. Students continued to encourage each other even when students from other schools become frustrated.

We would like to thank Nadia, Maria, Matthew Smith (Nathan’s dad), Antonia Leonello (Grace’s mum), Chantal Baillie (Ryan’s mum) and Bianca Barbaro (Joseph’s mum) w h o s u p p o r t e d u s w i t h supervision and coached teams. We also had a lot of parent support who came to watch on the day, including parents who were dedicated to drop their children at the carnival to ensure they participated.

We are continuing to build upon a fantastic sporting culture and the community loves it. A fantastic day had by all.

Smiles ear to ear!!

FROM THE APRIMOn, August 28th, it was the feast of our patron saint of the Salisbury Parish, Saint Augustine of Hippo.

Remembering Augustine

We remember the life and work of St Augustine. He lived from 354 to 430. Our remembering takes us back more than ten times the life of our little church building. Augustine is a world figure, whereas our church in Salisbury is not so famous. The many dimensions of Augustine’s life and work have continued to inspire and to generate controversy over the centuries and even to today.

One reason why Augustine’s name continues to be known is because he was a great writer. Augustine’s output, before he became a bishop and then during his many years as bishop of Hippo in North Africa, was immense and important. His Confessions is an astonishingly modern work. Recently, a Dominican writer, Aidan Nichols, wrote a study of the theology of Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI. Nichols tells us that Pope Benedict began his theological studies more than fifty years ago by researching St Augustine. The Pope continues to quote Augustine right through his life. His influence is still being felt.

We remember Augustine as a writer, as a philosopher, but also as a Bishop in very difficult times. Surely the Saint of our parish is not some forgotten non-entity, but a leader who continues through the centuries to give vitality to the Church. St Augustine, pray for us!

Sacrament Program

This Saturday, September 7th at 4pm and Sunday, September 9th at 10.15, will be the next session of the Saint Luke’s Sacrament Program. The Theme is Liturgy of the Word and Ways of Praying.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS There are many people in our parish who give generously of their time to do volunteer work. The Parish is able to offer so much more to its parishioners because of their assistance.

This parish accepts the policy and practice of the Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide in regard to volunteers undergoing a Department of Human Services (DHS) Working with Children Checks (WWCC). This process determines a person’s suitability for employment or volunteering within the Archdiocese and its affiliated organisations.

You may have heard that there are new laws in South Australia for organisations where people work and engage with children. DHS has been actively working on informing us and ensuring that we are compliant with the new Child Safety (Prohibited Persons) Act 2016, which commenced on 1st July 2019. The aim of the Act is to strengthen background checks for people wanting to work or volunteer with or around children and young people; in order to ensure that a person who is assessed as being of high risk to the safety of children will be proscribed from working or volunteering with them.

There are some notable changes to the Screening process resulting from the implementation of the Act:

• As of 1st July 2019 the validity period has changed from three years to five years.

• Previously, any volunteer upon reaching eighty was no longer required to renew their police clearance. On the implementation of the new law, these volunteers are now required to update their police clearance.

• The age requirement for clearance has been lowered to cover people from 14 years and above.

We are aware of the difficulties some people have with the screening application online and we are trying to do all we can to make the process easier. For people without emails, we encourage volunteers to fill in the form using the [email protected] email address. This way, the Screening Unit advises the Parish Office of the new online screening application. We then call the volunteer and invite them to complete the online application here in the office.

In the coming weeks, along with volunteers whose police clearances are due for renewal, any volunteers who are 14 years and over including those over eighty will receive a letter requesting they fill in the Screening and Verification Authority Initiation Check Request Form.

We appreciate not only the valuable work you do in this parish, but also your cooperation in this matter. And that, despite the inconvenience of this process, we need to be mindful that it safeguards not only our children, but also ensures the safety of all the vulnerable people of our parish.

The Parish Leadership Team
