Are you cyber security savvy? We caught up with Assistant IT Director, Wilson Sharpe to find out more about the forthcoming cyber security campaign his team is running. You’re launching a cyber-security campaign next week, can you tell us about some of the cyber security threats we’ve experienced at BSUH? Every day our Internet security systems defend us against 1000’s of virus attacks on the Trust. Bogus accounts on NHS mail are regularly used to try and persuade our staff to reveal their details. Hackers can try and access our systems to lock your files and then ask for a lot of money to unlock them. Has the cyber security threat level changed during COVID? It has increased considerably. Some NHS Trusts have had significant negative impact due to cyber-attacks. Hackers have no conscience or compassion and will take advantage of our minds being on other things. What is your team doing to address the challenges? We’ve increased the protection on all our systems and we have increased the monitoring of our systems, especially on the ‘gateways’ into the Trust. We are working closely with other surrounding Trusts so we alert each other of suspicious events. We’re also working with a specialist third party to deliver a cyber-security awareness campaign and there are some exciting training events starting next week. What can staff expect during the events you’re running – and why should they join in? It will be fun and interactive. We have a live magician showing us tricks that will amaze. A lot of the event is about helping staff protect themselves from fraudsters on social media and in areas like managing online accounts and subscriptions. Anything you’d like to add: 20 mins might be a small investment to save yourself a lot of pain when you fall victim to a thief who steals your data and your money! It’s important that all staff try to attend one of the sessions. The sessions are running on: Tuesday 30 July at 10am Thursday 2nd July at 2.30pm Wednesday 8th July at 12 noon Friday 10th July at 4pm Happy birthday NHS! With the 72 nd birthday of the NHS right around the corner (5 th July), we thought this is a great opportunity to say a huge Thank you to everybody that has supported us over the last few months. Whether it’s our amazing volunteers, community groups or individuals helping to fundraise for charity, we’d like to send a message to the community to mark the occasion. Look out for your invitation. Links to join each event will also be published on info- net and Workplace.

The sessions are running on:

Tuesday 30 July at 10am Thursday 2nd July at 2.30pm Wednesday 8th July at 12 noon Friday 10th July at 4pm

Happy birthday NHS! With the 72nd birthday of the NHS right around the corner (5th July), we thought this is a great opportunity to say a huge Thank you to everybody that has supported us over the last few months. Whether it’s our amazing volunteers, community groups or individuals helping to fundraise for charity, we’d like to send a message to the community to mark the occasion.

That’s why we’re asking teams to send in their photos and video messages to [email protected] for us to collate and post on social media on the day – it could be you and your team holding up a thank you sign, a nice message or simply a smiley photo.

We’ll post these from the Trust social media on 5th July and over the course of the week to mark the birthday and share our messages of thanks. Teams can also share their messages and photos from their own social media accounts if they have one.

Please make sure you consider social distancing in your photos by maintaining a safe distance from other colleagues in the picture or by wearing a mask.

Other events to mark the occasion includes one final Clap for Carers on the 5th July at noon and landmarks around the country will ‘light up blue’ in remembrance of those who have lost their lives this year to coronavirus, but also in recognition of the efforts of NHS workers during the pandemic.

Congratulations to Cameron Bishop on winning a Star of the Month award

Well done to Cameron Bishop, Ward Manager in Medicine division, on his win of the Star of the Month award back in February. Cameron was nominated by Jo Kerr who said in her nomination: “Cameron was about to go home and was contacted from a ward that one of the End of Life patients wanted to arrange a civil partnership ceremony the following day on the ward. Cameron had never organised anything like this before, however, he found the information on the intranet, contacted the relevant agencies, chaplain and organised the event to enable the civil partnership ceremony to happen. Cameron showed true compassion to make a dying wish come true and is a fantastic role model.”

Cameron was presented with his award by Ann Gibbons by video who said to Cameron: “You have always been passionate about nursing, passionate about patients and passionate about those you work with. I’m so pleased to give you this award, it’s incredibly well deserved I’m really proud that you work within the Medicine division.” You can watch the full video on YouTube.

Cameron said: “It is so nice to be recognised for the things we just take for granted in our daily jobs in nursing. This is something that I would do for anyone, at any stage of their lives, as patients in our hospital and I always strive to go above and beyond in everything I do. It’s things like this that make me so proud to be a nurse as I know I can make a real difference to people’s lives every day. “

BAME Volunteers – supporting our workforce during the pandemic A team of volunteers are coming together to provide support across the trust for BAME staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. They will be working with the Inclusion Team and Caroline Owens, Freedom to Speak Up Guardian (FTSUG), to act as a first point of advice and guidance to colleagues across the trust and will provide a confidential support network for any concerns staff would like to raise. Thank you to those who have come forward to volunteer so far, look out for profiles on the volunteers on Workplace coming soon. Applications are still open for anyone else who may be interested in this role. Contact Babs Harris on: [email protected] if you have any queries. Risk assessments for BAME staff are being done by managers across the trust. If you are a manager or a member of staff affected by this and the risk assessment hasn’t been completed please discuss this with each other to ensure the assessment is completed as soon as possible.

Congratulations Mr Charles Zammit – Top Teacher

We are delighted that BSUH staff are featuring in the annual BSMS Top Teacher Awards for Best Teacher again. This year, Mr Charles Zammit has won the runner-up Top Teacher Award for Best Teacher in Year 5 at BSMS.

Mr Zammit is a consultant surgeon at BSUH, the director of the Park Centre Breast Unit and BSUH’s Surgical College Tutor leading on surgical training as well as a multitude of educational initiatives within the Trust. He is a charismatic leader in the operating theatre and commands respect and affection from his peers and team members alike. Theatre staff describe him as a mentor and appreciate that he involves them in his educational activities as trainers and participants.

Mr Zammit is dedicated to educating the next generations of surgeons. Everyone in the Medical Education Centre sends their congratulations.

Restoration stories Soon, more and more services will be returning to business as usual practices as part of the Trust’s ‘3Rs’ approach (Refresh, Restore and Recover) to bring services back during the COVID-19 response. We want to hear about the innovative ways that teams are preparing to get back to the new ‘normal’ – send us some info to be featured in a staff profile at [email protected]. In the meantime, check out the staff profiles we’ve shared so far which feature some of the amazing #TeamBSUH stories documenting the ways in which teams have prepared for and adapted to working during the pandemic: https://www.bsuh.nhs.uk/staff-profiles/

This is to assist in communicating in particular with hard of hearing and deaf patients who are finding it increasingly difficult to hear and understand what is being said with face masks being worn.

Here is our Ward Manager, Babs Brown doing a lovely job of modelling the device.
