The Full School Assembly: It’s nearly time!

You may remember our bulletin on the 29th June going into some detail about the Full

School Assembly, and our highly valued traditions that are celebrated on this occasion.

School Assembly to close the year will take place on Friday, 17th July at 11am. The link

will be emailed to all families beforehand, and will also be available on Twitter, so

A Celebration of Reading

There is nothing like a fresh coat of paint to celebrate a fresh start! At

Wales, we wanted to make sure the school is as welcoming and

bright as possible when all students return. You might remember

that, a few weeks ago, we invited all our families, staff, and students

to be involved in a community vote for our best-loved and most

influential books. We are delighted to now be able to share with you

our final artwork, which students may well have seen as they visited

The Summer Reading Challenge!

Six weeks off is a long time to occupy yourself, especially after over 100 days in lockdown! Wales High School

BIG QUIZ!

Although this has, to say the

least, been a very unusual school

year, we have successfully delivered a programme of online schooling to our students and we would like to

celebrate the wonderful learning that has taken place. We would therefore like to make you aware of the

Wales High School BIG QUIZ, which will be taking place in the final week of term.

What is it?

• The Big Quiz will be a quiz that covers all subjects, allowing you to challenge

yourself to see what you can remember from across the year!

• There will be a separate quiz for Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10.

How will it work?

• On Wednesday, 15th July, your Head of Year will

send an email with a link to the quiz and instructions on

how to join. The deadline to complete it will be 5pm on

Thursday, 16th July.

• When you do the quiz, you will see your place on

the score board, but the results will not be final until

the closing time.

• Winners will receive a prize from the school in the

post. A great way to start the summer holidays!

Year Group Notices

Returning to School in September

To ensure a safe return of all students in September, we will operate a slightly different staggered start to the

year. Please see below for the return date for each year group:

• Wednesday 2nd September: Y7, Y12 and Y13

• Thursday 3rd September: Y7, Y10, Y11, Y12 and Y13

• Friday 4th September: Full school return

School will start at 8.30am for all year groups apart from Y12 and Y13, who will be contacted by the Sixth Form

Team.

Year 9

• In English, our Y10 students will be studying the play ‘Macbeth’ by William Shakespeare when they return in September. This play is a key exam text for GCSE English Literature and will be studied throughout KS4.

• In order to help your child learn effectively, we would like every student to purchase their own copy of this play. Doing this will enable them to annotate their copy during lessons, which will in turn facilitate more personalised and focused revision at KS4.

• Our recommended version is the Oxford School Shakespeare ‘Macbeth’, ISBN-10: 0198324006.

• Student copies can be bought from a good bookshop, or by ordering online. Please have your copy by September. If families are unable to purchase a copy for financial reasons, please contact Mrs. Ellin, Head of English, on we@waleshigh.com.

Year 11

• Further information regarding Results Day will be emailed to you during this week. Please check your emails for important updates.

• At least one week prior to Results Day, if you are wishing to continue at Wales High School in our Sixth Form and you have registered your interest, then you will receive an appointment date and time via email. Please confirm with your interviewer that you can attend. We are hoping to cover these on Results Day and the few days following this.

• Please could all prospective Sixth Formers reply to the email sent regarding options?

Year 12

• Progression Interviews: All students should have received a date and time for a progression interview. These should take place during this week and it is essential that students attend to secure discuss their progression into Y13. Alternative arrangements can be made for those not wishing to travel into school. If you have not received an email with your date and time, please contact Mrs. Hemming on ghe@waleshigh.com.

The Virtual Sports Ball

The Annual Sports Ball took place on the scheduled date of Friday 3rd July 2020 but in a very different format to what we were expecting. The P.E department were expecting to be under the spotlight at Magna, announcing the winners for 2020, whilst students and families enjoyed a three-course meal and an evening of entertainment. However, we went

ahead this year with a twist! Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we decided to record our students’ efforts on the first ever virtual Sports Ball. We thoroughly enjoyed putting this together as a team over phone calls and Teams meetings, particularly because it allowed us to talk about so many great memories and students this year. To say we had a shortened year makes our successes even more fulfilling. A massive well done and thank you to all of our students across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 who participated in extra-curricular sport this academic year. Across over 10 different sports, our students participated in over 120 extra-curricular fixtures, with approximately

300 students participating. We genuinely hope this is the last virtual Sports Ball we ever have to do, and we cannot wait to get back playing sport as soon as it is safe to do so. Spend your Summer Thinking About your Future

Some of our students have been spending their time away from school to think about and explore future

careers. You might remember us writing to you about Kudos a few weeks ago, and students can get started on

Kudos, if they haven’t already, by following the link below and using the code LIKEHINT75.

We have also put together a Careers Booklet for you, to help

you structure some time over the summer looking into

different jobs and options. This booklet is suitable for all year

groups. Mrs. Brown will also be running a live session on

Teams to discuss different elements of careers and show

parents and students Kudos on Wednesday 15th July at 7pm. Families from any year group are welcome.

16-18 Travel Pass

All young people aged 16-18 in South Yorkshire are

eligible to apply for a travel pass to subsidise travel

costs.

Students who live in South Yorkshire can apply for a

16-18 Travel Pass to prove to bus drivers, tram

conductors and ticket sellers that they’re entitled to a

concessionary fare on public transport. With a 16-18

Travel Pass they can travel in South Yorkshire for a

single fare of 80p per journey on bus or tram, and

travel for half price on local Northern trains. They can

also buy discounted 1, 7 and 28 day travel tickets for

young people. The pass is valid for up to 2 years.

Anyone born between 1 September 2003 and 31

August 2004 can apply now. Even though they may not

be travelling on public transport right now, they can

apply for a pass so they're ready to go when they do

need to travel again.

your child comes to school with the correct equipment. In September, we need all students to come to school

As we look forward to our future at Wales High School, we have been

thinking about 'What Wales Wants.' At this time, it is important to look at

the experiences that have formed those opinions and remember what our

time has been like over the lockdown period. With this in mind, we're

launching our memory jar and would like to start it off with your memories

of this (hopefully) once in a lifetime event. This will have changed all of us.

Year 10: A Very Special Performance of An Inspector Calls

All Y10 students should prioritise watching this very special performance of An Inspector Calls, which, as

you know, is a key examination text. Because our English department weren’t satisfied with any of the

current film or television versions, they decided to make their own! A must-see! You will need to be

logged onto Teams and be part of the Y10 English team (all Y10 students are) to view these, but we will

Family FAQs: September Return

Will my child wear uniform for September?

All students will be expected to have full uniform for the

new school year. The school uniform details and suggestions

for suppliers can be found by following this link:

Will there be staggered starts each day for

different year groups?

Due to students travelling from a number of different

villages, we won’t be setting daily staggered starts, but we

will continue to encourage active travel and there will be

spaces for each year group that you will be directed to once

you arrive at school.

Are all students going to return at once?

To ensure a safe return of all students in September, we will

operate a slightly different staggered start to the year.

Please see below for the return date for each year group:

• Wednesday 2nd September: Y7, Y12 and Y13

• Thursday 3rd September:Y7, Y10, Y11, Y12 and Y13

• Friday 4th September: Full school return

School will start at 8.30am for all year groups apart from

Y12 and Y13, who will be contacted by the Sixth Form Team.

We’ve heard lots about bubbles. What are they

and how will they work at Wales?

During the course of the lockdown, we have made a

number of changes to our school site. Some of these

changes will support keeping each year group in its own

‘bubble.’ We have created new spaces (with additional

hygiene facilities) for year groups to gather during free time,

provided extra toilets for each year group and lunch

provision will be appropriately spaced throughout the

school.

If a pupil or member of staff tests positive for

Covid-19, how will school be informed and how

would you act?

All positive test cases are reported to Public Health and they

then contact the school. We would then respond by closing

down a bubble or acting more widely if advised. We would

listen to advice at all stages.

What happens if my child develops Covid-19

symptoms?

If your child (or someone in the household) develops

symptoms of Covid-19, or tests positive, they must stay

at home and seek medical advice. Any students who

develop symptoms in school will be sent to student

reception and sent home as soon as possible. Remote

education will be offered immediately which will consist

of a planned, well sequenced curriculum with a good

level of clarity about what is intended to be taught and

practiced in each subject. At all times, please follow the

guidance from Public Health England, which can be found

here:

Will my child be in the same tutor base?

Each year we try to keep tutor bases in the same room.

This isn’t always guaranteed and so check your timetable

once it is released and see if there has been a move.

There will be plenty of staff in the car park and at the

gates on your first day and so there is no need to worry if

you are unsure.

When will my child get their timetable?

We hope to release the timetables before the end of the

summer term. The KS4 timetables are almost done and

will appear on the school’s VLE. We will be in contact via

email when this is available.

How do I access the VLE?

Students logon using their normal school PC username

and password, NOT their email username and password.

Pupil usernames should be in the format,

forename<space>surname e.g. John Smith. Do not type a

space after your surname or use email login. Follow the

How will my child safely keep their hands

washed throughout the day?

Over the summer we are investing in extra toilets to

ensure year groups have their own toilets and we have

purchased additional sanitising units that will be spread

out across all departments and areas of school. There will

be additional hand washing facilities in every area of

school.

Will you be running trips next year?

Owing to current government guidelines and limitations,

we have scaled down our programme of trips and

activities significantly next year, particularly in the

autumn term, where no external visits are to take place.

We are keeping up to date with the latest guidance and

will update our policies accordingly as time goes on.

Will extra-curricular clubs run as normal?

Whilst the DfE advises extra-curricular provision can take

place, the school will consider each provision separately

alongside our wider protective measures including

keeping students within their year group bubbles

wherever possible. Contact sports will not take place,

either during extra-curricular activities, or during the

normal school day.

What about P.E lessons?

P.E lessons will look different next year but will still take

place. We have a wealth of outdoor space and large

sports facilities. We will follow all guidance on equipment,

group sizes and activities that can be delivered.

How will students be kept safe when moving

between lessons?

The one-way system will be in operation at all times

throughout the day, including movement between

lessons. There will be a staggered system of movement

throughout the school, which all students will be made

aware of. Tutors will explain this to students in detail on

the first day back. Each classroom will be equipped with a

cleaning box, which will include resources such as spray

for desks and chairs, wipes and hand sanitiser. All surfaces

will be cleaned immediately after use.

What about equipment?

The sharing of equipment will not be possible due to

safety restrictions. With this in mind, it is essential

that all students arrive equipped to learn, as teachers

will not be able to lend students equipment. As a

minimum, students should arrive with: a black pen; a

pencil; a purple pen; a rubber; a sharpener; a

highlighter; a glue stick; a ruler and a scientific

calculator. Teachers will also have their own

equipment to avoid cross-contamination.

Is there still food provision at break?

Normal break and lunch time provision will be

available for everyone, but students will only be able

to collect food from their designated social areas.

There will be no crossing bubbles at any time.

When will we hear plans about exam

results day?

Year 11, 12 and 13 students will be notified via email

from the Sixth Form team regarding the

arrangements for the results days. You should receive

this email by the end of the week.

Do I have to send my child back?

DfE confirm returning to school is vital for children’s

education and for their wellbeing. Wales High School

fully supports this view. Time out of school is

detrimental for children’s cognitive and academic

development, particularly for disadvantaged children.

This impact can affect both current levels of learning

and children’s future ability to learn, and therefore

we need to ensure that all students can return to

school in September. Shielding advice for all adults

and children will pause on 1 August, subject to a

continued decline in the rates of community

transition of Covid-19. This means that all students

can return to school. Only where there are

significant rises in infection in local areas, will

students and staff be required to shield and therefore

be temporarily absent from school. In these

situations, absence will be authorised.

What if I, as a parent / carer, need to come

on site?

To ensure the safety of everyone at the school, we

cannot accept visitors without prior arrangement.

Please contact school via telephone or email and we

will try to accommodate any requests for visits.

Can I come into school grounds when

dropping off and collecting my child?

Wherever possible, please drop off and collect

children at the end of Chestnut Road rather than in

school grounds, to minimise the amount of people in

one area.

Will extra buses be put on to allow social

distancing?

The Local Authority remains responsible for school

transport and students will be encouraged to adhere

to rules when travelling on school or public transport.

The school continues to work closely with the Local

Authority to ensure efficient bus service provision for

our students. Although we have not had

confirmation from the bus companies at present,

they are working to ensure that safety guidelines are

met in September. New guidance is expected on

transport on the 11th August, and we will update you

on this matter as soon as we have more information.

We will operate a slightly staggered start at the end

of the day to reduce numbers waiting for buses

returning home. We encourage active travel

wherever possible.

During free time, can my child see a

friend or sibling from a different year

group?

Although we understand how students may wish

to do this, we need to reiterate that students are

not able to cross bubbles when on school site. All

bubbles have their own social area and even the

back fields will be divided into separate year

group spaces. This is to ensure the health and

safety of all concerned.

Are students and staff wearing PPE?

The school will ensure that there are sufficient

tissues and bins available for the ‘Catch it, bin it,

kill it’ routine to be followed. Face coverings in

school are currently not recommended by Public

Health England as misuse may inadvertently

increase the risk of transmission. Additionally,

there may be negative effects on communication

and education. Therefore, no face coverings will

be worn in school. If your child uses public

transport and therefore has to wear a mask, they

will be asked to remove it and put it away upon

arrival at school.

Will you keep updating us in the

summer?

Although this will be less frequent, it is our

intention to continue with our updates over the

summer period. You will of course hear from us

should there be any change to government

advice. The Headteacher will write to you

formally in the week commencing 17th August

with further updates.

My teacher says I haven’t completed some homework but I can’t find it.

All homework tasks stay on Go4Schools but they may have moved to a different section.

Can I find homework tasks I haven’t done on the Go4Schools website?

Yes, all homework tasks can be found on one page and can be accessed via your profile on Go4Schools.

Follow the steps below:

From your profile page on G4S find

the homework section and click on

‘view full list of homework tasks.’

Your homework is in 4

sections which you can

easily go to by clicking

on the correct link.

Homework tasks you might not have

completed can be found in the

‘pending/incomplete’ homework.

section.

Remember to tick off the work when

you have completed it.

Can I find homework tasks I haven’t done by using the Go4Schools app?

Yes, you can also see homework that you haven’t completed by using the app. When you view your

homework on the app you will see the tasks that are due to be completed soon.

There are 4 tabs at

the bottom of this

page. You will be

looking at the

‘ongoing’ when you

first look at your

homework.

For you to see

homework that

you haven’t done

and have missed

the deadline you

will need to click

on ‘pending.’

This will show all

the homework

you still need to

complete.

You can scroll

through the page

to see all the

homework in

each section.

Remember to tick

off the homework

when you have

completed it.
