I can’t quite believe I’m sitting here, writing the foreword for the 2018 Swanage Jazz Festival brochure. This time last year life was very simple! All I had to do was practice the guitar by day and play jazz gigs in the evenings.I was as surprised and saddened as anybody to hear that the festival was to fold last year so I offered to take it on, and Fred Lindop, the artistic director, agreed. I think the actual words I chose at the time were: “There must be somebody out there who’ll keep it going. If the worst comes to the worst, I’ll do it!”Well, the worst did come to the worst!I am not an entrepreneur, a speculator or an investor.I am merely a jazz guitar player who couldn’t bear to see another festival disappear. My motivation is for no other reason than to do my utmost to ensure that this wonderful event continues this year and (hopefully) for years to come.Fred and the committee worked tirelessly to set up and keep this little jewel in the the UK jazz calendar going for twenty eight years and I salute them for their sterling efforts. As a mark of respect for Fred’s work, the modern jazz tent (Marquee 2) will henceforth be known as the Lindop Tent.A huge debt of gratitude is also owed to all those jazz fans who supported the ‘Kickstarter’ crowd funding campaign in October of 2017, all those who came to the fund raising concert in the Mowlem Theatre last year and all those who bought tickets for the Fibonacci guitar raffle. Without all your help this festival would not be happening and we all owe you our thanks.I’ll be honest. If somebody had told me before I threw my hat into the ring how completely and utterly all-consuming the organisation of this

festival would be, I would have walked away but, now everything is in place, I feel a sense of achievement such as never before.Much of the work has been largely unseen but there has been fundamental change behind the scenes - mainly modernisation of the infrastructure. Tickets are now available online through the new website, there is an online mailing list (which saves the festival a small fortune in postage), all bills are now paid electronically, the itinerary is all online etc, etc. You’ll also see some very obvious changes when you turn up. The marquees are now big tops and there will be more refreshments on site. The concerts previously held in the Methodist Church will, for this year at least, be held next door (on the right) in the Youth Centre. There’s a big venue in there with sound baffles on the walls. Who knew??I made the decision to up the festival income and push through the VAT barrier which has essentially dictated the finances for years and this has of course led to having to up the ticket prices. This was totally unavoidable if I were to achieve the changes that you will see this year. Thank you for not balking at the prices. Even with the changes, Swanage is still one of the best value jazz festivals in the U.K. I have done my best to ensure that the programming for the 2018 festival is very much a continuation of previous years’ and as such I have made sure that many friends and stalwarts, who have made SJF what it is, are once again performing this year. For instance - Keith Nichols’ Blue Devils, Alan Barnes, David Newton, Greg Abate, ‘Spats’ Langham, Martin Litton’s Red Hot Peppers, John Maddocks and Dave Brennan’s Jubilee Jazz Band are all here again.

It should be mentioned at this juncture that we were profoundly saddened to hear that Dave Brennan passed away earlier this year. The band will perform under the leadership of Terry Kennedy. There will be some new faces too and I’m very pleased to have managed to book some really fabulous acts who have perhaps been ‘over budget’ in previous years. Phronesis, Jazz Jamaica and the Echoes of Ellington orchestra, for example, are all here this year.Excitingly, we now have a late licence at the Conservative Club on Friday and Saturday nights, where Andy Davies, the virtuoso trumpet player who runs the upstairs sessions at Ronnie Scott’s, will be hosting this late night jam session with his irresistible enthusiasm. I have no idea how popular this will be and the club isn’t huge so I’m hoping there won’t be too many turned away because of limits on numbers. Bear with me. It’s an experiment!I’m pleased to have rekindled the relationship with the Mowlem Theatre and aside from the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars/Claire Martin OBE public show on the 13th there will be lots of great small groups playing in the Community room, such as the Mark Crooks/Colin Oxley quartet, the AIison Rayner Quintet, Anthony Kerr Quartet and more. I’ve tried to avoid stylistic clashes elsewhere. The irrepressible Kai Hoffman will be leading lindy hop dance classes with her fabulous band in the British Legion on Saturday night and I’ve introduced some modern jazz to the free fringe events this year, variety being the spice of life...I’ve also made sure that I keep the contact with local young musicians and we have the Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra playing twice and the Queen Elizabeth’s School Jazz Orchestra.Similarly, I vowed to source all employment locally and this has led to most of the beer and cider being provided by Hattie Brown’s which is the only brewery in Swanage. I have tried it all (work, work, work...) and can assure you that it’s great stuff! The website was designed by Anthony Elleray who’s company ‘Design the Box’ is based in the town and the brochure was produced by the totally invaluable and professional Rik Rose, who also provides ‘state of the art’ sound and light with his company ‘StageLightSound.com’.Paul Burrows’ help and fantastic ‘go ahead’ attitude has been a joy. His company ‘Tidal’, based in Poole, have provided all the tickets,

wristbands and merchandise and it’s been an absolute pleasure to work with him.The dynamo force of nature that is Frank Roberts has been running around town like a soldier ant, making sure that everything’s running exactly as it should and, should you manage to catch up with him, you should give a give a pat on the back!Massive thanks to Elaine Crouch who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to help make sense of the mountain of paperwork, to offer profoundly wise advice and to be an absolute rock in the darker times. We have also a debt of gratitude to Cambridge drums who have supplied the kits for the main stages, and to Absolute music of Poole who have supplied the amplifiers. Massive thanks to you.Taking on this festival didn’t turn only my life upside down. My family have been swept along on this journey too. They didn’t ask for this and yet they have all shown incredible tolerance and much needed emotional support. They’ll all be helping out down at the bar, if they are still talking to me!A special thanks must go to all the stewards and volunteers, without whom the festival could simply not function. I could sit here thanking people all day and there are many, many others. They know who they are.Thank you.Thank you all.

I’ve suggested that it might be good etiquette to ‘stroll’ between venues in a break and, although we wouldn’t dream of enforcing this(!) I have introduced breaks half way through sets to enable not only this but trips to the bar, the loo, etc. without having to wait for too long.If you have any feedback then feel free to get in touch. This is very much ‘your’ festival and I want you all to be happy.I literally could not have worked any harder to make this happen and if I see that everybody is enjoying themselves then it will all have been worth it.

Have a great weekend.

GREG ABATEThe Lindop Tent - Saturday 11.30amGreg Abate jazz saxophonist, flutist, composer continues as an International Jazz/Recording Artist with 225 days a year spent touring the globe. In the mid 70’s after finishing a four year program at Berklee College Of Music, Greg played lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra for 2 years. In 1978 Greg formed his group Channel One which was a favorite in the New England area and from there had the opportunity to play tenor sax with the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra under leadership of Dick Johnson from 1986 to ’87.Following this experience Greg ventured out as post hard bop soloist playing Jazz Festivals, Jazz Societies and Jazz Clubs throughout the U.S. Canada and abroad, including most of Europe, UK, and Moscow and Georgia Russia.Greg recorded his first CD Live At Birdland NYC in 1991 on the Candid Jazz Label with the trio of James Williams, Rufus Reid and Kenny Washington. To this date Greg has recorded over 17 other recordings as leader. Greg is also an adjunct professor of Jazz Studies at Rhode Island

College and is also a very active jazz clinician with co-sponsorship from the Selmer Instrument Co., conducting workshops and master classes through the U.S and abroad.

“Abate is not content to rely on stock bebop riffs and standard chord progressions. Rather, the sharp angularity of his phrases and the often startling pauses in his fast-moving lines give his work a feeling of constant invention and creativity.” Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune“…Abate’s musical style can be seen as a distillation of swing’s easygoing vibe and bop’s more animated groove. He has developed a unique voice.” METRO San Jose

ARQ - ALISON RAYNER QUINTETMowlem CR – Saturday 2.30pmARQ’s profile has risen rapidly in the past four years, with extensive touring and critical acclaim for their second album, ‘A Magic Life’. Described by the Guardian as ‘spirited, eloquent and graceful’ and by the Observer as ‘purposeful, full-toned and melodic, a beautifully integrated

band’, their music is awash with infectious grooves, lyrical melodies and a music founded in jazz but with folk, rock, classical and world music influences. They have built a substantial and wide-ranging audienceand four and five star reviews in jazz and national press. Their recent ‘Magic Life’ UK tour concluded with a sell-out night at the Soho Pizza Express Jazz Club.

“The quintet’s multi-faceted pieces are full of delightful colour and detail –but for all their sophistication remained wholly accessible and unfailingly melodic.” The Jazz Mann

Alison Rayner - double bass, Buster Birch - drums & percussion, Steve Lodder - piano, Diane McLoughlin - saxophones, Deirdre Cartwright – guitar

THE ALAN BARNES OCTETThe Lindop Tent – Friday 9pm-11pmAlan Barnes is a prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist.  He is best known for his work on clarinet, alto and baritone sax, where he combines a

formidable virtuosity with a musical expression and collaborative spirit that have few peers.  His range and brilliance have made him a ‘first call’ for studio and live work since his precocious arrival on the scene more than thirty-seven years ago.  He has written many compositions and arrangements for his all-star octet including ‘The Sherlock Holmes Suite’, ‘A Jazz Christmas Carol’ and ‘Fish Tales’ and runs a successful Jazz record label; Woodville Records.Alan’s warm rapport with audiences have made him uniquely popular in British jazz. He has received over 30 British Jazz Awards, most recently in 2016 for clarinet, and has twice been made BBC Jazz Musician of the Year.

Mark Nightingale - trombone, Robert Fowler, Karen Sharp, Alan Barnes - saxophones/clarinets, David Newton – piano, Simon Thorpe – double bass, Clark Tracey - drums

ALAN BARNES & DAVID NEWTONThe Lindop Tent – Sunday 11.30amAlan Barnes and David Newton have been playing duets for 40 years. These multiple award winners cover a vast repertoire from Louis Armstrong to

Chick Corea and play with an empathy that can only come with long experience. David is one of the greatest solo jazz pianists this country has ever produced and Alan plays multi reed instruments. They have developed an empathy and telepathic sympathy which only playing together for many years can bring. The emphasis, as always, is on swinging, accessibility and interplay. Expect a hugely entertaining programme of straight ahead jazz flawlessly played and interspersed with lots of anecdotes and peppered with humour.

IAN BATEMAN & SIMON SPILLETT with THE CRAIG MILVERTON TRIO  ‘Coppin’ The Bop’ - A tribute to J.J.Johnson and Frank RosolinoThe Lindop Tent – Saturday 4pmFrank Rosolino and JJ Johnson were two of the greatest jazz trombonists that ever lived.  They both played in the bands and orchestras spanning the golden years of jazz and maintained busy studio careers.  During the age of bebop, trombonists were getting less of a look in as the saxophone and trumpet took centre stage.  Indeed, few trombonists could master that style, until players like JJ and Frank came along. In the late 1950’s they both formed small jazz groups, usually trombone with a tenor sax and piano trio.  The recordings that they made in their own names stand out as some of the greatest, yet they seem elusive in the glut of better known bebop recordings of the time.Ian Bateman took on the task of transcribing many of these recordings and performing them live.  Ian usually takes this show into the jazz clubs and festivals with a variety of musicians.  Swanage Jazz Festival will be privileged to have award-winning tenor sax man Simon Spillett joining Ian on trombone with the fabulous Craig Milverton Trio to play some of these classic recordings in a live setting.  Be prepared to get down to some seriously swinging jazz.

BATEMAN BROTHERS JAZZ BANDMarquee 1 – Friday 7pmWhen the Bateman Brothers Jazz Band won the award for best jazz CD in the 2011 British Jazz Awards, some reviewers thought they were listening to Louis Armstrong’s All-Stars.  Alan’s uncanny likeness to Louis’ trumpet playing is now widely recognised, as is Ian’s ability to be as lyrical on Trombone as Jack Teagarden and as punchy as Trummy Young.

You’ll hear the same arrangements as played by the All-Stars, whose strength was in their 300+ live performances worldwide every year for 20 years and this band certainly brings that sound to life.  They are joined by vocalist Rachael Pennell, enabling the band to feature those wonderful duets between Louis and Velma Middleton. The band is packed with stars of the British jazz scene who were members of the bands of Kenny Ball, Acker Bilk, Chris Barber and Terry Lightfoot.  With that pedigree behind them, this band knows how to swing and get the audience on the edge of their seats.  That’s how it was with Louis Armstrong and his All-Stars and that’s how it will be when the Bateman Brothers make their long-awaited appearance at Swanage Jazz Festival, much to the delight of their many fans.

Alan Bateman – trumpet/vocals, Ian Bateman – trombone, Trevor Whiting – clarinet, John Day – double bass, Craig Milverton – piano, Nick Millward – drums, Rachael Pennell – vocals

BRASS VOLCANOESMarquee 1 – Saturday 8.30pmThe Brass Volcanoes, based in London, are inspired by the New Orleans brass band tradition, while also incorporating influences from other cultures and genres. This is all tied together with top class musicianship and a sense fun, giving the band its own unique sound. Sousaphone player Graham Hughes formed the Brass Volcanoes in 2007, and from the outset the focus was on spontaneity, energy, interaction and joy.The Brass Volcanoes have a repertoire built from songs that would be familiar on the streets of New Orleans, interpretations of songs from other genres, and numbers composed by members of the band themselves. This gives the band its own unique sound unlike any other in the UK.Described as a band that “is totally impossible not to enjoy”, The Brass Volcanoes has been inspiring people of all ages and tastes at clubs, arts centres and festivals across the UK.

“They made my day with their enthusiastic, infectious vibe.” Keswick Jazz Festival“Loved, loved, LOVED this gig tonight - you were all amazing! ” Wilderness Festival

Graham Hughes – sousaphone, Gabriel Garrick, Ben Cummings – trumpets, Malcolm Earle-Smith – trombone, Jac Jones – tenor sax, Alessandro “Bubu” Canini – drums

ECHOES OF ELLINGTON JAZZ ORCHESTRA ft. CLAIRE MARTIN OBE‘The Duke’s Greatest Hits’The Lindop Tent – Saturday 9pm In 1914, a young man called Edward Ellington wrote a simple piano piece entitled Soda Fountain Rag. Over the next sixty years, he would compose a cannon of work which would have him recognised as the foremost American composer of any genre. Nicknamed Duke by his schoolfriends because of his regal bearing, Ellington’s music contains a unique blend of contrasts and contradictions - the music is unique, exciting, earthy and refined. The Echoes Of Ellington was first formed in 1994 to celebrate the Duke’s music, and to bring it to a modern audience. Today, the orchestra is in its finest incarnation yet, with highly specialised virtuoso players on all the instruments who understand intimately the nuances put on the page by the Duke. This concert will focus on the great hits - Take The A Train, Satin Doll,

Mood Indigo, Caravan, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, Sophisticated Lady, and all your other Ellington favourites!

Directed by Richard Pite. Soloists - Colin Skinner, Dean Masser, Ian Bateman, Louis Dowdeswell, Enrico Tomasso and Jay Craig.

FLETCH’S BREWYouth Centre - Sunday 4pmIn 2010 renowned drummer Mark Fletch put together a band compromised of some of the most innovative players in British music. That band became Fletch’s Brew. Across evolving line-ups and with many of Fletch’s long-time collaborators joining the band, the central ethos of Fletch’s Brew remains commitment to spontaneity. Whether playing original compositions or new arrangements from across the jazz cannon, the band’s style floats seamlessly between the idioms of fusion, funk, bop, reggae and rock.

Freddie Gavita - trumpet/flugel, Laurence Cottle - bass, Ross Stanley - organ, Mark Fletcher - drums/abuse

BENNY GOODMAN AT CARNEGIE HALL The Lindop Tent – Sunday 1.45pmRegarded as the finest jazz spectacle ever, the Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall concert of 1938 is revered by big band fans, and recordings of that historic event continue to still sell today on vinyl and CD. It’s thanks to Benny that jazz was elevated from the dance halls, clubs and dives to the concert platform. The repertoire is as refreshing today as it was in 1938, and Pete Long and the All-Star Goodmen Orchestra bring it alive with their outstanding musicianship. In keeping with the original concert Pete uses Benny Goodman’s favoured clarinet reeds and drummer Richard Pite plays an exact replica of Gene Krupa’s kit using Gene’s actual cymbals and brushes. The entire repertoire from the 1938 concert is featured, including Don’t Be That Way, Sing Sing Sing, I Got Rhythm, If Dreams Come True and Springtime in the Rockies. Long, who has played with Jools Holland and Ronnie Scott’s Big Band, will have a big band that includes singer Joan Viskant and musicians Enrico Tomasso, Anthony Kerr and Richard Pite as they pay tribute to such a landmark concert.

Directed by Pete Long. Soloists – Pete Long, James Davison, Ian Bateman, Duncan Hemstock, Anthony Kerr. Joan Viskant – vocals

JOHN HALLAM/AMY ROBERTS QUINTETThe Con Club – Saturday 7pmJohn Hallam is a highly acclaimed clarinettist and saxophonist whose musical journey has taken him from military bands to jazz. He has played alongside many leading lights, including Humphrey Lyttelton, George Melly, Stephane Grappelli and Alan Barnes. He has running his own band since 2000, and joined forces with Amy back in 2010 to form the Hallam/Roberts Quintet. Amy Roberts trained as a classical musician at the Royal Northern College of Music, before spending four years as a prominent member of The Big Chris Barber Band. Since leaving to focus on her own career she has been in huge demand as a freelance performer, working with bands such as the London Swing Orchestra, Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Matthew Herbert Brexit Big Band and Keith Nichols Blue Devils. Amy has won three British Jazz Awards, in 2009, 2011 and 2015. continued on p.22

Cannonball Adderley was one of the best-loved figures in post-war jazz. in 2018. The Jazzmen have their own sound brought about by the unique style of John’s clarinet playing. John was originally inspired by the fine clarinettist Johnny Dodds, but John is his own man and encompasses influences from all over the traditional jazz spectrum.Personnel changes have been few over the years and this helps to give the band its cohesiveness. The band is also well known for its drive and the inclusion of some seldom heard tunes in the repertoire along with some fine arrangements from Peter Wilkinson, the band’s trumpet player.Having played what was to be the last ever traditional jazz set at Swanage Jazz Festival in 2017 the band is absolutely delighted to be able to play at the Festival again in 2018.

John Maddocks - reeds, Peter Wilkinson - trumpet, Chris Gower - trombone, Chris Satterly - piano, Peter McCurrie - bass and sousaphone, Doug Kennedy - banjo and guitar, Brian Barker – drums

This band takes no prisoners!

Mancio and virtuoso  reeds player, Mark Crooks co-lead this tribute to the remarkable Brazilian composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist and  Bossa Nova  co-creator Antonio Carlos “Tom” Jobim. Jobim’s beautiful, bitter-sweet melodies evoke the sunshine and easy rhythm of Brazil combined with a jazz musician’s sense of harmony, the eloquence of George Gershwin and Irving Berlin and the sweep of Debussy, Chopin and Ravel. Salud! Tom Jobim recreates the hits (Desafinado, Chega de Saudade, Corcovado  and most famously The Girl from Ipanema) as well as lesser known gems with collaborators Elis Regina, Stan Getz, João and Astrud Gilberto. Georgia and Mark lead an all-star band to pay an authentic and soulful appreciation of this timeless music.

CRAIG MILVERTON TRIO (with GREG ABATE)Lindop Tent – Saturday 11.30am Craig Milverton is one of Britain’s finest Jazz Pianists and this was recognised in 2010 by winning Best Jazz Pianist in the British Jazz Awards and 11 Awards with Digby Fairweather and his Half Dozen in the Best Small Group Category. He also has many projects  , including Trichotism alongside the brilliant award winning guitarist Nigel Price based loosely on The Oscar Peterson drumless trios, his tribute to Oscar Peterson Show which features the superb Canadian guitarist Dominic Ashworth , gifted young Ray Brown inspired  bassist Sandy Suchodolski and the great swinging drummer Nick Millward. His solo piano show ‘Jazz Piano Legends’ pays homage to 17 Great Pianists from James P Johnson to Dave Brubeck. He plays regularly at one of the worlds most famous jazz clubs; Ronnie Scott’s, and has toured and performed at top venues and festivals across the globe.

Britain’s nearest to Oscar Peterson” Digby Fairweather“An extravagantly gifted pianist with an unrivalled swing”  Dave Gelly, The Observer “A hard swinging pianist whose chops certainly bring to mind, the great Oscar Peterson”  Cadence magazine, USA

DAVE MORWOOD’S ‘RASCALS OF RHYTHM’The Con Club – Sunday 11.30amThe Rascals came into being some 25 years ago and soon developed a very distinctive and instantly recognisable sound. They don’t fit easily into any obvious category but provide a refreshing visit to an era of swinging, carefree jazz with a repertoire drawn from Jelly Roll Morton to Duke Ellington & Count Basie via Fats Waller and John Kirby. The band is tuneful, swings like mad and exudes energy and enthusiasm. The Rascals are fronted by two superb musicians, Mike Wills & Tony Blincowe who between them play enough reed instruments to stock a shop (or maybe a museum). The drumless rhythm section consists of Perry Lock, piano, Mike Bennett, bass and Dave Moorwood, acoustic guitar, occasional vocals and arrangements, and was once described by Digby Fairweather as “Springy as a trampoline & uncluttered as air”.Dave takes great delight in searching for gems

amongst the myriad almost forgotten songs of the 20s & 30s, which over the years has resulted in a large, varied and unusual repertoire.

KEITH NICHOLS & THE BLUE DEVILSMarquee 1 – Sunday 9pmThe 10 piece Blue Devils was formed by Keith in 2003 following on from his highly successful Midnite Follies Orchestra of the 70’s and The Cotton Club Orchestra in the 80’s and 90’s. The band plays music gleaned from Keith’s vast archive of music from the 1920’s and 30’s featuring the music of such greats as Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong, Jean Goldkette and many more. Titles include Puttin’ On The Ritz, Singing In The Rain, Button Up Your Overcoat, It Had To Be You,  Anything Goes, Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Night and Day.

‘NOT JUST SAX’Red Lion – Sunday 1pm‘NOT JUST SAX’ are a group of four professional musicians from the south who share a love of melodic, rhythmic jazz and enjoy pushing the boundaries of the idiom with both a variety of well known jazz favourites and beautiful originals composed by pianist Ray Shea. BYRON WALLEN ‘FOUR CORNERS’ Youth Centre – Saturday 4pmOriginally from Tottenham, Byron Wallen has lived in Woolwich, South East London, for nearly 20 years. In 2016 Byron was commissioned by PRS For Music Foundation to compose a suite of music celebrating his chosen home town, a suite which became known as ‘Anthem for Woolwich’. Byron’s work draws inspiration from contemporary and indigenous cultures. This piece combines the music of a large part of the world whilst retaining its own distinct voice reflecting the heritage, diversity and vitality of Woolwich. The project was conceived in 2013, sitting in the central square in Woolwich, Byron was struck by the community around him. It seemed unique and wonderful with its mixture of ages and nationalities, from Nepalese elders to young Nigerian men, and Somali mums with young families, a new Eastern European contingent and descendants of families who used to work in the docks and at the Arsenal. For many years, Woolwich had been a place spoken of with great negativity, particularly by those who didn’t actually engage with the area. The aim of this composition is to pay a lasting homage to Woolwich and deepen the artistic and personal relationships within the community. Byron’s passionate musical knowledge and his fascination with the human spirit is evident in this new music which is breath-taking in its excitement and depth. Byron Wallen performs ‘Anthem For Woolwich’ with his band Four Corners.
