Each week we award one student for their attendance at school. All students who attend school each day for the week, with no late arrivals or early departures go into the draw for a $10 Scholastic book voucher. These vouchers are kindly donated by our P&C and we thank them for their continued commitment to supporting our students to achieve the best they possibly can. Congratulations to Wade Forrester and Lara Stallan who are our Super Attenders for the fortnight. Year 5/6 won Winston last week with the most points for their behaviour .

One more week to go and then holidays! We are still busy working on completing our ending for the story ‘Skat the Mutt’. There have been some fantastic ideas and excellent writing. This week in maths, we are learning about measurement- capacity and area. Lots of hand-on learning experiences to cover these learning concepts. Next week we may even be able to incorporate cooking into one of our lessons to reinforce these concepts. Health- we have been discussing healthy and unhealthy foods. Students are learning the importance of eating healthy fruit and vegetables to keep their bodies healthy and so that they brains can continue to learn. Please ensure your child has one healthy snack in their lunch box each day so that they can continue to ‘feed their brains’ and continue learning.

Year 3/4 students have worked hard over the last couple of weeks, completing HASS, Health and Maths units

(see their wonderful fraction turkeys below). They are now in the midst of completing their Science and one

more maths unit. For Science, students are designing a game which incorporates a type of force and has to be

completed in ‘60’ seconds. While in maths, students are working around ‘time’. Telling the time, particularly

on an analogue clock can be a very difficult concept to grasp so the more practise a child has the more likely

they will be of understanding the idea of time. It is so important that your child cannot only tell time on a

digital clock but also on an analogue clock. There are a number of things you can do to help your child gain

a better understanding of time for example: You can quiz them with questions such as how long until tea if

we eat at …… ? Or what time will the cake be cooked if we put it in the oven at…. And it takes 35 minutes

to cook? Or simply asking them what time it is. You may even want to consider purchasing a little wristwatch

for your child to wear.

Everyone in our class is getting so excited about our sleepover this Friday and Camp on Monday! I am sure

some have already packed their ports and are ready for their mini adventure . As this will be our last

newsletter until next term I just want to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and I hope to see you all next

term .

Holidays are all about eating lunch in your pj’s.

Year 5/6 students are all working tirelessly to finish off assessment tasks before they head off on camps and transition days at high school. Tomorrow will be our second day of cooking and woodwork. Next term will see more cooking and woodwork days as well as Year 6 camp to Talle and our Year 6 Graduation evening. A parent meeting has been scheduled for next Thursday afternoon at 3:05 to make some decisions around this night. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we cannot hold our Graduation dinner at the hall as we usually do. We have two options to discuss -:

1. The event is held on school grounds in our multi-purpose courts and will consist

of light supper.

2. The event is held at the Highway Hotel (which has a COVID safe plan in place) and would be a sit down meal

like it usually is.

This decision WILL be made next Thursday by any parents who attend our meeting and will not be changed, as we may need to make bookings.

Athletics Carnival Congratulations to the mighty WALLA team for their ultimate victory last Monday at our Athletics carnival. It was a very close race this year….. What will next year bring Giant Kookaburra and Koala We had a lovely visit from the Giant Kookaburra and Koala last Thursday morning . Dr Farvardin Daliri built the Kookaburra while stuck in lockdown due to COVID-19. With no Government funding, he relies on donations to assist with the cost of taking his sculptures up and down the coast to bring joy to those he visits. Student Council were proud to make a $20 donation towards his travels. Stationery Store The school now has a “stationery store” where students can purchase items that need replacing eg: pencils, rubbers, glue sticks. Prices are below and can be purchased from the office Monday – Wednesday.

Pencils $0.35 Ruler $0.30 Document Wallet $0.70

Exercise book $0.40 Glue Stick $2.10 Eraser $0.30

Grid Book $1.10 Sharpener $0.60

Super Star Rewards!! All of our Super Star students enjoyed a very wet and colourful day on Thursday. Congratulations to all who

achieved this level.

Touch Football Carnival Students in Years 3-6 will be travelling to Gin Gin State School this Friday 11th September to participate in the Touch Football carnival. Any student who had paid for the T-ball carnival which was cancelled in Term 1 will not be charged for this activity. Any new students in years 3-6 and those who had not previously paid, will need to send $5 along with the permission and medical consent form. Year 4/5 camp We are looking forward to Monday as we head off on our Year 4/5 camp to Landsborough! Thank you once again to our 2 fathers, Mr Wochnik and Mr Williamson, who have volunteered to attend and help out during this camp. Your assistance is truly appreciated. Bus will be departing at 8am on Monday morning and will return at approximately 3:30pm on Wednesday afternoon. Year 6 Transition to High School Year 6 students will attend a transition day at Gin Gin State High School on Tuesday September 15th (week 10). This will be an all-day event. Students who travel on the bus to school, are welcome to stay on that bus and continue on to the high school. Any parent who will be driving their student to Gin Gin should be there by 8:30am on this day. Mrs Julie Manderson will be accompanying the students for their first day of transition. Two further days will be held next term on November 17th and December 1st. Enrolment packs have been distributed to students and should be returned to school no later than tomorrow. More information on any parent meetings scheduled will be given out on the first transition day. Mega Star Reward An outdoor movie and snacks will be held for all Mega Star students on Thursday 17th September. Students can bring along their own camp chairs to sit in for this event. There will be 2 separate movies for students to choose from. Students in Prep/1/2 will be watching Latte and the Magic Waterstone. Latte is a great kid’s movie that is full of fun and adventure. It is based on the children’s book by Sebastian Lybeck . The movie is about an impetuous, grouchy hedgehog named Latte and her anxious squirrel friend Tjum, who journey to reclaim a magic stone stolen by a bear king. Rated: G

Students in Years 3-6 can choose from the lower school movie or the upper school movie which is “Playing With Fire”. This is an action, adventure and comedy movie. When straight-laced fire superintendent Jake Carson (John Cena) and his elite team of expert firefighters come to the rescue of three siblings in the path of an encroaching wildfire, they quickly realise that no amount of training could prepare them for their most challenging job yet -- babysitters. Unable to locate the children's parents, the firefighters have their lives, jobs and even their fire depot turned upside down and quickly learn that kids -- much like fires -- are wild and unpredictable. Rating: PG

Friday 18th September will be the last day of term 3. School resumes on Tuesday 6th October. Till next time,

Kerry Inskip Principal

Helping others is not only good for them and a good thing to do; it also makes us happier and healthier too. Giving also connects us to others, creating stronger communities and helping to build a happier society for everyone. It is not all about money - we can also give our time, ideas and energy.

When we help others, it activates the areas of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection and trust. Altruistic behaviour releases endorphins in the brain and boosts happiness for us as well as the people we help. Most of us want to feel like our lives mean something-that we are making a positive difference in the world. Studies have shown that helping others tends to boost our own sense of happiness. Helping others is not a one-way street, when you have touched someone’s life in a positive way, you feel connected to them. It builds trust through cooperation, which brings people closer together. You adapt better to stress and adversity by building resilience when you help others. A recent study showed that by looking at the challenges of others’ lives, you can take that point of view into your own. It makes you more accepting of the stress and hardships we all have to face. When you choose to help others, especially fact to face you are entering

someone’s live in a positive way, reinforcing social connections as you go. The link between better health and helping others includes lowering depression rates, and it is good for your mental health. We are hardwired for social interactions, which includes a lot of touch, eye contact and smiles. Such interactions release a hormone called Oxytocin, which helps us bond and care and for others and helps us manage stress. Not only that, doing good makes us happier which, in turn, makes us healthier. Carol Ryff a psychologist, who reviewed the writings of numerous philosophers found one overarching idea: that helping others is a ‘central feature of a positive, well-lived life’. A meaningful life isn’t found, but created through our actions.

PBL : Focus of the week

Rule of the Week Undercover areas is the matrix rule our school is focusing on this week. As we come to the end of Term 3 all students should be familiar and understand how to use the school’s undercover

areas responsibly, respectfully and safely. This includes sitting while waiting to be released in the morning. Our focus skill for the week is, Helping. The art of helping/supporting others rather than doing for them is an important skill to have and includes attending, listening, questioning and reflecting.
