Verbs of Motion

The following verbs are verbs of motion. These verbs are intransitive (cannot take a direct object) and use être as the helping verb when doing the passé composé. Create the past participles as you would normally, but the past participle must agree with the subject.

Monter - to go up/to get on

Rester - to stay

Sortir - to go out

Venir - to come (revenir - to come again; devenir - to become) (pp = venu)

Aller - to go

Na ître - to be born (pp = né)

Descendre - to go down/to get down

Entrer - to enter (rentrer - to come back)

Retourner - to return

Tomber - to fall

Arriver - to arrive

Mourir - to die (pp = mort)

Partir - to leave

Passer - to pass by
