Dear people of Chailey,I hope that Ned is not too disappointed with the life he shares in Chailey with thepoor Church mouse. We had a delivery last week that must have made his littlespirit dip. As you know, Ned came from a Charity Shop, spotted by my wife andfrom the second she saw him, he was hers. She traced the people who had kindlydonated him, wrote them a letter of thanks and sent them the magazines withnews of Ned in them. The postman arrived at the Rectory with a letter of reply andwith the disappointing news that Ned was not Ned, but “Silver Shadow,” muchmore regal than ‘Ned’ and a little disappointing for him to have such a commonname. What’s in a name? Nothing. The letter finished with “when we donatedhim to the Charity Shop we could never have imagined that in his new home hewould have such a magical influence on two sad little girls. Who knows in thefuture he may work his magic and bring comfort to other unhappy children.” HappyNew Year Ned, my wife and the girls love all of your names.

When I was an RAF Chaplain in Catterick, the Queen was scheduled to present anew ‘Colour’ to the RAF Regiment. Military minds will know this as a ‘Standard’every Regiment has one and their battle honours are represented on it. Workbegan months and months before the visit. There was even a new bathroom builtfor her convenience. We rehearsed the parade, the meal in the Officers Mess, theband, the marching, how to shake hands, what to say, what not to say. It was verytedious, but necessary. Each officer had to donate a days pay towards her gift, which was going to be a piece of Caithness glass in the guise of a rose bowl, anadded piece to her collection. It took three rose bowls to be blown and finally aperfect rose bowl arrived at the camp. Each time I was in the CommandingOfficers office he pretended to drop it. Still with me? Nothing quite like militaryhumour! The due day arrived, the Queen was on time. We had lunch in the Officers Mess, then she went for tea in the Sergeants Mess. The bowl was balanced on a table inthe foyer. As the Queen stepped out of her car, the bowl slipped and in slowmotion hit the floor, shattering into thousands of small pieces. The Station WarrantOfficer, who was retiring and this was to be the pinnacle of his career, to presentthe bowl to the Queen, offered to fall on his sword and the Queens Lady in Waitingsaid “just put all the pieces in a box, that will be fine!” Now that is realdisappointment.

As we begin this New Year, many of us will have disappointments, some will havesadness, some will have huge life changing events, others will have smallerupsets but whichever one it is, it will affect us, our wellbeing and our sense ofbeing. In the Bible, Pauls letter to the Romans chapter 5 vs 1-5 it says, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our LordJesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace inwhich we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so,but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering producesperseverance; perseverance, character and character, hope. And hope does not

disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” God promises that if we put our trust in Him, He will help usto overcome all our disappointments. In my life I have found this to be true over andover again. I believe that God wants to begin the New Year with us.

When the weather forecasters say “Could be colder nextweek” little did we realise that the snow would come insuch quantities as November ended with a good coveringand December started with further falls giving a total of 34cm in my garden and making a winter wonderland. I havebeen feeding the wild birds and I hope you have too?

In November, the Archaeology walk was enjoyed by members, looking at variousfeatures on Romany Ridge, including the numerous WW2 trenches, and IanSeccombe did his own walk entitled ‘Common Curiosities’ and the group were takenon a circular journey around the commons looking at some of the more obscurefeatures. Our indoor meeting was well attended to hear Alison Wright’s talk onAncient trees.

We were very sorry to learn of the death, on November 17th, of our committee mem-ber Ann Woollard, who did so much to support the Society, especially with stagingour photographic displays. Our thoughts are with her family.

No meetings in December, so our next one will be our Survey Results from RomanyRidge during 2010 on Thursday January 20th 2011 at 7.30 in Chailey Village Hall, withslides, photos and charts of the findings during the year.

A Happy New Year to everyone.

For more information, do have a look at our website, where there are details of theSociety and pictures from the various seasons and activities.

Saturday 5th February 2pm to 4pm

We have just opened our fantastic new premises within the grounds of Chailey StPeter’s Primary School, BN8 4BD

Please come along for a visit where you will have the opportunity to meet staff andsome of our current children.

.....................................................................

As this term comes to a close we have been very busy making Christmas decorationsand cooking. We took a break from the glitter and glue to consider how the birds in ourgarden would be able to find food in the snow. The children had many fantasticsuggestions as to how they could help and were even willing to sacrifice theirsandwich bread, after great discussion we compromised with some crusts andleftovers!  The children enjoyed making suet seed balls which we hung out in thetrees and will keep watching to see which birds come to visit us. Our Christmas party is on the last day of term and we hope that Father Christmas willdrop in to see us before he gets too busy.

Sadly we say goodbye to the part time reception children who have been with us fortwo terms as they move onto full time school in January and look forward to seeingthem around the school. If you would like further information about the preschool or would like to makearrangements to see us please call Diane on 07852 986024.

Loft Insulation for Grantham CloseIn December, I was more than delighted to help the Trustees and residents of GranthamClose solve a problem they were battling with for about a year. There was simply a‘hiccup’ in communication between Lewes District Council, the contractor andinformation required for the insulation loft grant. I have solved the problem and the workwill be done. I hope that the loft insulation at Grantham Close will make a difference.

Helping our elderly is crucial. It is especially important in the freezing cold wintermonths that old people keep warm in their own homes. I do urge all our elderlyresidents in Chailey who require help and advice for loft insulation to contact:

Pupils from years 5 and 6 took part in the Big Sing at the CongressTheatre in Eastbourne, an enjoyable and worthwhile event, but callme pedantic if you like but I really dislike the tendency these days touse verbs as nouns, we are, after all, trying to teach children correctgrammar. We now have a specialist singing teacher who comesinto school one day each week.

Two year 5 girls, who competed in the cross country race atWivelsfield, did sufficiently well to be selected to represent the localarea schools at the next County event.

The children here support the work of the Chailey and Newick Colts who providesupport for the pupils of a school in The Gambia and staff member Adam Downeywent with the group on their recent visit. They provide teaching materials and helpwith building projects there.

We have a brand new Friends committee and unfortunately, due to the recent weatherproblems, the Christmas Fair had to be resheduled to Monday 13th.

If you have a child due to start school next year , come in and see us, there are stillplaces available.

Congratulations to two of our teachers who now have additions to their families. TheStill family have Barney and Mrs. Slade’s family have Beatrice.

I’ve never thought that the Christmas story needed to be augmented with grumpysheep or bossy kings. The story as told in the gospels is as exciting and compellingas any. This year the Infants have obviously agreed and produced an unclutteredaccount of the miraculous event. The action is interspersed with beautifully sungcarols, conducted, somewhat precariously, by Miss Freeman, standing on a step

I saw on T.V. during the recent snow that essential supplies of bread and milk werestruggling to get through to outlying areas. I know things are tight these days but thatis what we used to fill up on during the war.
