Over the last year, many of the top teams in the country have taken notice at events similar to The Battle of the Border. A 90mph plus fastball will generate excitement in the eyes of college baseball coaches. UNC Chapel Hill first took notice last fall when Chris made waves at the Perfect Game tourna- ment in Jupiter, FL pitching for The On Deck Base- ball organization. Their pursuit of Chris was met with open arms and late last week, Chris said yes to the Tar Heels. “I have always been driven to play at an ACC school that has a combination of strong academics and a rich history of a winning program,” said Chris. “Everything seemed to click for me at UNC-CH and I just felt like the fit was right for me. Success has been building for many years for Chris. He has worked hard and accepted quality in- struction enroute to becoming a successful pitcher. “I’m not sure that I have always thrown faster than other players, but I have always had the gift of a good arm. I have worked hard to get stronger and as a result I have seen big jumps in my velocity over the last few years.” Over the last month, Chris has been able to rise from a consistent 90-91 mph fast ball up to 90-93 while playing in East Cobb, GA at the World Wood Bat Tournament. An event that he helped his team advance to the round of 16 in while competing against many of the top showcase teams in the country. “This past week at East Cobb, I hit 93 several times and was consistently at 90-93. Before East Cobb I was between 90-91 so I think that I am mov- ing in the right direction.” With the commitment now in the rear view mir- ror, Chris can begin thinking about his senior sea- son for Ardrey Kell Head Coach Hal Bagwell. The veteran coach is a big fan of Chris and the way he approaches the game. “Chris is an outstanding student-athlete who represents Ardrey Kell High School in a first class manner both on and off the field,” said Bagwell. “He is extremely coachable, has a strong work ethic, is an outstanding teammate and he is highly respected. He possesses great athletic ability and outstanding arm strength. These qualities plus tremendous fu- ture potential are the reasons he will be successful in the ACC. I am very proud of Chris and take pride in coaching him.” Chris is excited about his senior season. “We need to bring the State Championship back to Ardrey Kell. I want to do everything I can to pro- vide leadership to our team and to help and support Coach Bagwell.” The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Chris McCue for his hard work and commitment to attend UNC Chapel Hill. Jake Keating, a rising senior soccer player at South Mecklenburg High School, is known as an outstand-ing defender in his position at Left Back. Jake’s strengths of crossing the ball, getting into the attack, and not letting attackers through his side of the field have earned him a place on the All-Conference list the past two years, as well as being recognized as an All-Region player last fall. At South Meck, not only is Jake a leader on the soccer team, he is also an A/B honor roll student. Jake, the son of Larry and Holly Keating, has com-

mitted to attending and playing soc-cer at UNC-Charlotte in 2011.

How old were you when you started playing soccer and how did you get involved with it?“When I first started playing soccer I was around 4 and I just was looking for a sport to pick up. After I started playing soccer it just seemed to come naturally.”

What do you like most about soccer?“The thing that I like most about soccer is the competitiveness of the game and the way the game is played, there’s nothing better than being in a close game and having to fight for a win.”

What has been one standout game for you during your high school career so far?“One standout game I’ve had during high school soccer was my fresh-men year on varsity when I scored a header against Myers Park . We ended up beating them and it was pretty cool scoring against a good team like that my freshman year.” What advice would you give to someone who wants to start

playing soccer?“Well, anyone that is interested in soccer should try to join a lower level club team and work their way up.”

What impact has this year’s World Cup in South Africa had on the popularity of soccer here in the US ?“The World Cup in South Africa has brought a good amount of attention to soccer in the US and hopefully people will start to recognize soccer as more of an “American” sport.”

What are the keys to being a successful soccer player? And being a successful player at the left back position?“The main keys to being a successful soccer player are your skill on the ball, fitness, and just your determi-nation on the field. As far as the left back position goes I think that being able to consistently keep posses-sion of the ball, cross the ball well, and get into the attack often are all things that can make you successful in this position.”

With South Meck’s record of 12-9-2 (W-L-T) last fall, what goals do you and the team have for the season this fall?

“Well to be honest, our team was pretty disappointed with our record last year because we always push to be the best. This year, our team has many small goals but the biggest goal we have is to win the confer-ence, and then possibly compete for a state title.”

As you begin training with the team this summer, what specific things are you focusing on to be ready for the fall season?“The main things were focusing on this year are just moving the ball around and figuring out the kinks in the team so we will be well prepared for the season.”

Which teams will be your tough-est opponents this fall and what will you need to beat them?“Well, I think that the toughest games this year will be our rivalries with Myers Park and Ardrey Kell. Both of those teams are always very competitive and it will always be a good game no matter what. Provi-dence is also always competitive. To beat these teams you have to make sure you come out ready to play and execute your game plan as best as you can.”

BEYOND THE GAME WITH JAKE KEATINGWritten by Shauna Rust, Myers Park High School

BEAT THE HEAT…GIVE YOUR BRAIN A TREAT!

Children experience learning loss when they do not engage in educa-tional activities during the summer. This means that some of what they have spent time learning over the preceding school year evaporates during the summer months. However, summer learning loss is some-thing that you can help prevent.

NewPoint Learning Center is committed to providing your family with the best learning experience possible, nurturing confidence and igniting ambition. If your child has a summer reading project due for Language Arts, come in and let one of our certified teachers help your child un-derstand the program and work together for a successful completion.

SAT/ACT preparation has begun for the Fall 2010 academic calendar. The first ACT test will be on September 12, 2010. Registration deadline for that test is August 7, 2010. The first SAT test is scheduled for Octo-ber 9, 2010. The best locations for these tests fill-up quickly, register early to reserve your spot and avoid additional late fees. Early and con-sistent preparation is the best way to be successful on these standard tests. Call to receive a free practice test to determine your current score and we will tailor the lessons based on each student’s needs. In addi-tion, we offer college planning sessions to those interested in learning about the application process, available scholarships and timelines for applying to the college of their choice.

It’s not too late to jump-start the 2010-2011 school year! Students can still get a boost on next year’s curriculum in math, language arts and even foreign languages. July is a great time to come in for a free as-sessment and one hour tutoring session. We offer flexible schedules in both group settings and one-on-one tutoring. We look forward to help-ing your students achieve their academic best!

Jamie Carter, a rising senior at Charlotte Catholic, is a top runner on the Catholic cross country team. After being encouraged by his father, a marathon runner, and watching his older sister excel as a runner at Catholic, Jamie started running track, and has been running ever since. Jamie, the son of Jay and Anne Carter, was a member of the All-Re-gion team (Top 12) last cross-country season and a member of the 5th place Charlotte Catholic team at the North Carolina High School Athletic Asso-ciation State Meet last fall. This fall, Jamie hopes to not only break the 17 minute barrier in the 5k, but to also break 16:30.

At what age did you start run-ning and why did it interest you?“I was in 8th grade when I started running track, I was about 14. It in-terested me because I played football, rugby, and wrestling in 6th through 8th grade and it [running] interested me because it had more strategy than just running with the ball. Also, my dad and sister definitely encouraged me to start running. I started lik-ing running during football season, going to cross country practice, and liked running with my friends which was pretty cool.”

What do you like most about cross-country?“It can be an individual sport, but also a team sport. In the race, you’re running against everyone, but also with your team. You can have a bad day and team still does well, or you can have a good day and the team doesn’t do well.”

What is the highlight of your running career?“Earning All-Region last cross country season was a pretty big accomplishment for me, I didn’t expect to get it, I ran and knew I was somewhere close to Top 12. And then I heard my name called up and I was 12th, I was surprised and excited.”

How have Catholic’s summer workouts been going and how is the team shaping up for the fall season?“The team is looking pretty good.

We have about 5-6 returning run-ners that should be pretty good and should be in the Top 7. Coach Cause-brook had been doing some new workouts and those are going well.”

What advice would you have for someone who wants to get started with running?“I would say, if they can, try to find a club or team they can run with. Try and find the right distance and pace to run at. It’s a lot easier to go out running with a team or pack and it’ll keep you motivated.”

How has this year’s coaching change affected the team or the team’s training? [Coach Causebrook is the new men’s’ cross country coach at Charlotte Catholic]“We’ve been doing more hill work-outs, like Tuesday practices at the Y [the Harris YMCA]. So, doing more hills, but it hasn’t changed a lot. Also, doing more push-ups and non-run-ning stuff.”

With a 5k PR (personal record) of 17:06 last season, what is your goal for this coming season?“My goal for this season would be that I’d really like to get under 16:30. Like last year I was trying to get under 17 [minutes] and got close, but not close enough. But, this year I’d like to get under 16:30, maybe 16:20.”

With the Catholic men’s team

earning a 5th place finish in the North Carolina 3A State Meet last fall, what goals are you and your teammates working to-wards for this season?“The [men’s] cross country team has qualified for States pretty much every year. So, our goal is definitely qualifying for States and placing [at the State meet] in the Top 7. If every-thing goes well we could probably place around 3rd at States. We’re definitely going for Top 3, but we would be happy with a 4th place fin-ish. [Last year,] we were ranked 2nd earlier in the season, but we didn’t have a good race. It really depends on how the season plays out. If the returning runners get the PR’s they want to, I feel like we could do pretty well.”

As a senior this year, are you looking to run in college? “I definitely will keep running when I’m in college. If I go to a smaller school, I’ll go out for the team, but at a bigger school, probably just run Club maybe. But I definitely want to keep running as a hobby.”

What are the keys to being a fast and successful runner?“Getting a base during the summer is a key part. People can train a lot, but during the race they don’t have it. You have to be confident, get in the mode, run hard, and give everything you have.”

BEYOND THE GAME WITH QUINN MAHONEY

Written by Jordan Koletic, Charlotte Catholic Class of 2008

Twelve year old Quinn Mahoney will begin the seventh grade at Holy Trinity Catholic Middle School next month. The son of Bob and Amy Mahoney excels in nearly every sporting event he participates in. Whether the sport is basketball, football or swim-ming, Quinn demonstrates leadership skills that help his teams to succeed.

Are you involved in multiple sports?“Yes, I play football, basketball, swimming and golf (which I made a hole in one the other day).”

Despite your many interests which of these sports is your favorite and why?“Football, by a mile! I really enjoy playing football the most because I’m good at it and it’s a contact sport.”

In football, what positions do you play?“I am the quarterback, but I also play outside linebacker.”

Do you have any fond memories of your football career to date?“I played on the Pop Warner Team and towards the end of the second half, I tackled the quarterback pretty hard to end and win the game.” Do you have any advice for other young athletes?“My advice would be if you find a sport your good at and one that you love stick with it, you’ll succeed and be happy.”

5 MISTAKES ALL FEMALE ATHLETES MAKE - WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW(# 2 of a 5 part series from Alicia Marblo, Architech Sports and Physical Therapy)

Weight in Kg Carbohydrate in g/kg

Daily carb. intake

120 pounds divided by 2.2 kg/lb = 55 kg x

6-10 g/kg = 330-550 grams per day

Endurance athletes:120 pounds divided by 2.2 kg/lb = 55 kg x

7-10 g/kg = 385-550 grams per day

Mistake Number 2: Not eating enough……

ENERGY REQUIREMENTS FOR FEMALE ATHLETE: Protein/Carbohydrates

Although usual energy intakes for many intensely training female athletes might match those of male athletes per kilogram body weight, some female ath-letes may consume less energy than they expend. Low energy intake (less than 1800 to 2000 kcal/day) for female athletes is a major nutritional concern because a persistent state of energy balance can lead to weight loss and disruption of endocrine function.

Inadequate energy intake (what you eat) relative to energy expenditure (activity) compromises perfor-mance and negates the benefits of training. With lim-ited energy intake, fat and lean tissue will be used for fuel by the body. Loss of lean tissue mass results in the loss of strength and endurance, as well as compro-mised immune, endocrine, and musculoskeletal func-tion.

The current RDA is 0.8 g/kg body weight and the Ac-ceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range for protein in-take for adults older than age 18 years is 10% to 35% of total energy. Dietary intake of protein for endurance athletes ranges from 1.2 to 1.4 g/kg/day.

To calculate protein requirements per pound of body weight use the table on below

Weight in Kg Protein in g/kg

Daily protein intake

120 pounds divided by 2.2 kg/lb = 55 kg x

0.8 g/kg = 44 grams per day

Endurance athletes:120 pounds divided by 2.2 kg/lb = 55 kg x

1.2 g/kg to 1.4 g/kg =

66 to 77 grams per day

Here at Architech Sports and Physical Therapy we can help female athletes design a meal plan as well as educate on what to eat before and after a game or training session. Alicia Marblo is the only Physical Therapist in the region specializing in the female athlete and their unique needs. For more information visit architechsports.com or call 704-900-8960.

Carbohydrates are the main energy source used by two out of three energy systems that your body uses. Be-cause of this, your daily carbohydrate intake should be at least 50% of the total calories you consume. Without sufficient carbohydrates you will run out of gas during a workout because carbohydrates provide the energy you need to engage in activities. If you do not eat enough carbohydrates, you will fatigue out early and your per-formance level will decline.

To calculate carbohydrate requirements per pound of body weight use the table on below.

Protein is necessary for muscle repair and growth, and is important in your diet to promote recovery from exercise. Carbohydrates are the body’s primary source of energy and you should eat sufficient amounts of them to ensure that proteins are used for muscle repair and not substituted for an energy source.

RUN FASTER. JUMP HIGHER. IMPROVE AGILITY.

YOU. IMPROVED.

Madelin Talbert, a rising junior at South Mecklenburg High School, only started running two years ago when her father made her choose a sport. Her choice was to run cross-country. With a combination of natural talent, hard work, and a competitive mind-set, Madelin earned a 14th place finish in the cross-country state meet her freshman year. Although a case of the swine flu ended her season early last fall, Madelin went on to earn a 9th place finish at the indoor track state meet as a sophomore. Madelin, the daughter of Mark and Kathleen Tal-

bert, has big goals for her cross-coun-try season this fall, and the future.

At what age did you start run-ning and what got you involved with it?“I never played any sports my whole life, but my freshman year my dad made me choose a sport. I chose cross country, so that’s how I started track and cross country. I really liked it, so I just kept doing it, and I’m really glad it happened that way.”

What do you like most about cross-country?“I like how competitive it is be-cause I’m really competitive. It’s so competitive, you can compete with yourself. It’s independent, but with a team. You form a really close bond with everyone and become really close, it’s like a family.”

What is the highlight of your running career?“I don’t remember what race, but it was a track meet and I was the running the mile. I was in 2nd and I was just coming off of an injury and didn’t want to take the lead yet. And then on the last lap I tried to pass her [the girl in the lead] around the curve, and I tripped and face planted. I got back up and sprinted

and ended up winning. It wasn’t my best time, but it was a big confidence boost to get back up and win.”

What training have you been putting in this summer in prepa-ration for the fall season?“Well, of course I have practice three times a week, I pretty much run everyday, and do all of the workouts coach gives me. I try to cross-train and do a lot of biking because I don’t want to push too hard and get injured because that’s happened the last two seasons.”

What advice would you have for someone who wants to get started with running?“Definitely stretch a lot, that’s some-thing I don’t really do, and that’s been bad for me. And work hard and don’t give up over one bad race, because everyone has those.”

With a 5k PR (personal record) of 18:54 last season, what is your goal for this coming season?“Well, as far as this season, I want to break 18:30, and in the future I want to break 18. I think I’m more pre-pared this season and know what I’m getting into. I ran track in the spring and now I’ve learned to sprint at the end. Now that it’s my junior year, I

have more goals about colleges and stuff, so that’s really motivating. This is the time where I want to push myself and make better goals. And I really want to make States again because it’s been a few years and I’m just really excited to see what I can do this season.” What are the keys to being a fast and successful runner?“You definitely have to be dedicated because if you don’t put in the work and effort you’re not going to know what you could’ve done. I’m really competitive and like to win and you have to stay positive because things will set you back. Like last fall, I got swine flu so I couldn’t run cross country Regional’s, or States. So you have to take things that happen and use them for better and now dwell on the past.”

What injuries did you have to deal with last year and what did you learn from the experience?“During track I had a hip injury so I had to sit out. I still got to run Regional’s, but missed [qualifying for] States by one place. So, I went to Dr. Greenapple for physical therapy which really helped. It was kind of a disappointment, but now I know how to prevent injuries more.”

The Union County Viper Baseball Program is a non-profit 501(c)(3) Travel baseball organization that is focused on Total Player Development. We strive to provide our players with superior training, knowledge and the highest level of competition possible. It is our goal to be an elite 10U Travel baseball team and to be competitive with the strongest 10u teams across the country.

Our goal is to create an environment that will allow our players to realize their capabilities as baseball players; to develop confidence, self esteem and poise as athletes; to understand that their achievements are a direct result of their efforts; to cultivate friend-ships among their teammates; and to understand that sportsmanship, not showmanship, is the major ingredient in playing with class and respecting the great game of baseball.

The Union County Vipers travel baseball program provides a fun, challenging and intense baseball experience for select talented players. Participation in the travel program requires a serious commitment on the part of its players and their parents. We will primarily play local tournaments sponsored by Play Top Gun Sports, Triple Crown, Nations Baseball and USSSA. In addition, our team enters 2 or 3 national tournaments in locations such as Myrtle Beach, SC and Atlanta, GA or Orlando, FL.

JACK AND DAVID FELKNER FORM A DYNAMIC DUO

Written by Jordan Koletic, Charlotte Catholic Class of 2008

Jack and David Felkner are huge con-tributors to the Olde’ Providence Summer Swim League Team. The sons of Mary Mar-tha and Pete Felkner attend Anami Montes-sori School in Char-lotte, North Carolina.

Both boys are ac-tive in many sports and demonstrate lead-ership in each activity that they participate in. Jack, 10, plays bas-

ketball, soccer, and runs on top of his commitment to swimming. When asked what his favorite memory of sports were Jack replied, “When playing basket-ball, I had never been on a strong team before until I got the chance to play on a three on three team at Davidson. This is a fun experience because I had never really won before and I got the feel how good it is to win!”

Even though Jack is faced with many commitments he still finds time for each sport and sets goals for himself. The end of the summer swim league is coming to a close; the All-Star meet marks the end of the 2010 swim league. “I’ve never won at All- Stars. I’ve always come in second or third so this year I want to win in the backstroke.” Jack offers this advice for other athletes, “ Leave it all out of the playing field, you shouldn’t have enough energy afterwards to do anything else when the game is over.”

David Felkner, 8, began swimming when he was a Shrimper. Shrimpers are swimmers under the age of six. David’s best memory comes from his years as a shrimper when he received his first blue ribbon. “ I felt excited, good, and happy all at once.” David is no longer a shrimper and as he has aged up. He is also be-ginning to show all the characteristics of a leader on the Olde Providence team. “Everyone I know, all my friends are big swimmers. Summer league was a great way to make new friends too.”

Both Jack and David Felkner are strong athletes. This means that they strive for the best always-set new goals to accomplish and demonstrate leadership and friendship with their peers. We wish them both the best of luck in all their endeavors!
