Tervetuloa! Welcome!Greetings from the

About Scott Campbell
This is what the nominator said when recommending Scott for the Sisu Award: “Scott has worked hard for the community
of Frederick in voluntary roles ever since he returned following his college education at USD. He wears many hats, such as EMT, fireman, city snow plowing, serving on City Council as Mayor and as a council member, WEB board, golf coach for Frederick School, and more.”
Scott is a well-respected leader in the community. His role as a business and community leader in Frederick means that when Scott voices his support for a project, others respect his opinion, and the project is more likely to happen. With Scott’s support and effort, both out front and behind the scenes, Frederick is a better place.
Sisu Award honors service
The Sisu Award honors people who have served the Frederick community with de-termination and perseverance, living up to
the best meaning of sisu. These people gener-ally don’t tout their own accomplishments, so their work often goes uncelebrated. This award is one small way we can say “thank you” for all the quiet work that goes into making our com-munity a great place to live.
Congratulations to our 2015 Sisu Award recipient, Scott
Campbell!—Krysti Mikkonen & Tracy Olson,
Frederick Forward co-presidents
Tervetuloa! Welcome!
About Everett Laurilla
Frederick’s oldest resident is Everett Lau-rilla, who celebrated his 97th birthday
May 16. Everett was born in
1918 in Frederick, SD. In his youth, Everett worked at local stores in both Frederick and Brookings, SD. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He and his first wife
had two children. The couple divorced in 1965, and Everett remarried Margaret Sineway. Together they lived in Orlando, Florida, where they had two sons and ran the Three Point Bowling Center. The couple later moved back to Frederick to care for Everett’s mother (Aina Laurilla).
Since the passing of both Aina and Margaret, Everett has continued to live in Frederick. He works diligently maintaining his yard and has one of the nicest front yards in the community.
Honoring Frederick’s oldest residentGreetings from the
2015 Sisu Award recipient:This year Frederick Forward officially starts a tradition of honoring Frederick’s oldest resident during Finn Fest.
“Welcome to Frederick and I hope everyone enjoys our Finn Fest: Midsummer on the Maple celebration. A big thank you to the Frederick Forward committee for organizing our celebration. This year’s Finn Fest will have many activities for the
whole family to enjoy. ” —Scott Campbell
Thanks to Krista Stoddard for designing this year’s Finn Fest logo!

Frederick is named after a Finn-ish man, Kustaa “Frederick” Bergstadius, who was a clerk
and emigrant agent for the Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul Railway Com-pany. Some records say that he never actually visited the area, but he was satisfied enough with the report of a friend, Erick Pikkarainen, that he en-couraged others to move there.
Finnish immigrants were among the area’s first settlers; many of them homesteaded northeast of Frederick in the area of Savo, which was named after Bergstadius’ home province in Finland.
In recent years, when members of Frederick Forward, a community development group that started with the help of the Horizons program of the Northeast Area Foundation, discussed having an annual festival in the town, they decided that the festival should celebrate the town’s Finnish heritage. The first Finn Fest was held in 2008.
Finn Fest honors Frederick’s Finnish heritage
The caption on this publicity map reads: “Was founded in the spring of 1882 and is the finest town site in Dakota, and, during the first year of its existence, rapidly developed in size and prominence, now numbering about 700 population and many solid business enterprises. Among its many improvements it has every facility for commercial business in the way of railroads, telegraph, banking, express, mail, etc., is situated on the Maple River and on the H. & D. Division of the C., M. & St. P. R. R., and soon to be connect with the Northwestern by the O., F. & B. R. R. from Ordway to Bismarck, which is to be completed to Frederick at an early day. Frederick is in the center of the best agricultural part of the Jim River Valley, with pure water, fine churches and schools, excellent society, and destined to become a prosperous commercial city. For information as to prices of lots, etc., address C. F. Campau, Frederick, D. T.”

Set up pins as shown at right. Draw to see who throws first. Set a throwing line about 10 feet away, and stand behind it to throw. The first player throws and tries to knock over the pins. Throws are always underhand. After a throw, fallen pins are put upright at the place where they fell. If one pin falls, the score = the number on the pin. If more than one falls, the score = the count of the pins that fell. Pins leaning on other pins don’t count as fallen. If a player misses three times, he or she is out of the game. The game ends when
How to play Mölkky
a player reaches exactly 50 points. If a player goes over 50, the player’s score is lowered to 25.

Hefting wives and tossing boots may not be Olympic sports, but that doesn’t mean Finns don’t take them seriously!
(Well, OK, there sometimes might be a smile peeking around a competitor’s game face.) These sports have large tournaments in Fin-land that attract international participants.
The wife-carrying competition, or eukonkanto, which tests both a couple’s physical condition and sense of humor, has its roots in the stories of a robber who would steal girls from neighboring villages. In the contest, men can carry their wives however they like, but they must take care not to drop them, or they will have seconds added to their time! The fastest wife-carrying couple receives the equivalent of the wife’s weight in beer.
In the boot toss, or saappaanheitto, contestants try to throw their boots as far as they can. They can grip the boot however they like, but the leg of the boot must be straight while it is in the air. We’ll have some “official” rubber boots on hand for the contest! Nearly all ages can participate.
And if you’ve ever had the urge to chuck your cell phone, join us for kännykänheitto.
You can also try the Finnish version of
“Dance Dance Revolution.” It’s tikkuristi, a dance done over two crossed sticks. The music gets faster, and the goal is keeping the dancing going without touching the sticks. Last one still dancing wins!
Kubb and mölkky, both involving throwing pieces of wood, are great strategy games for all ages. This year, Frederick is an official site for the USA Mölkky Tour! Read more on page FF7.
Come join the fun!
