Definition försäkringskontrakt (IFRS 4 Appendix A)
• Separera vissa embedded derivatives

Consolidated financial statements
The financial statements of a group in which the assets, liabilities, equity, income, expensesand cash flows of the parent and its subsidiaries are presented as those of a single economicentity. IFRS 10 Consolidated Financial Statements, Appendix A

Measurement of financial liabilities under IFRS 9
» IAS 39’s treatment of financial liabilities is carried forward
» This means that most financial liabilities will continue to be measured at amortised cost
» IFRS 9 includes the same option as IAS 39 that permits entities to elect to measure financial liabilities at fair value through profit or loss if particular criteria are met

The IASB is in the final stages of the insurance contracts project, with predominantly one major topic outstanding for further discussion (participating contracts)
Building block approach
33 © Cavendi Management Consulting
• The insurance contracts liability can be regarded as comprising two elements:
• Liability for remaining coverage• Liability for incurred claims
• The main proposed approach for measuring the insurance contracts liability is called the building block approach
• The fulfilment cash flows represent a current, updated estimate of amounts the company expects to collect from premiums, and pay out for claims, benefits and expenses, adjusted for risk (risk adjustment) and the time value of money (discounted)
• When existent, certain or all of the cash flows can be measured by the fair value of a replicating portfolio.

Premiums • Premiums, premium adjustments, instalments • Premiums outside of the contract boundary
Claims • Expected future payments to policyholder (including RBNS, IBNR, all future claims and other benefits under the existing contract)
• Payments to current or future policyholders• Cash flows from options and guarantees
• Claims arising from future insurance contracts
Costs • Direct acquisition costs for a portfolio of contracts (selling, underwriting and initiating the insurance contracts)
• Recurring commissions• Claim handling costs• Policy administration and maintenance costs (premium
billing, handling policy changes)
• Indirect acquisition costs to acquire portfolio of contracts (software, sales staff, recruiting and training, administration, rent, advertising)
• Costs that cannot be directly attributed (administrative overhead that do not contribute to acquiring or fulfilling the insurance contract, product development and training, inefficiencies)
Other • Investment returns• Unbundled components
Cash flows
34 © Cavendi Management Consulting
The future cash flows shall include all cash inflows and cash outflows that relate directly tothe fulfilment of the portfolio of contracts. They shall be explicit, entity-specific, probability-
weighted, unbiased and current.
• The objective of the discount rates is to adjust the future cash flows for the time value of money and to reflect the characteristics of the insurance contracts
• Current and updated each period
• Market consistent
• No explicit methods prescribed, but bottom-up and top-down approaches given as examples (see right)
• To the extent that the amount, timing or uncertainty of the cash flows depend wholly or partly on the performance of specific assets, the discount rate should reflect that dependence

• Represents the compensation an entity requires for bearing the uncertainty about the amount and timing of the cash flows
• The risk adjustment measures the compensation that the insurer would require to make it indifferent between:
• Fulfilling an insurance contract liability which would have a range of possible outcomes or
• Fulfilling a fixed liability that has the same expected present value of cash flows as the insurance contract
• Range of available techniques and the related inputs are not limited, but a number of characteristics are provided (see right)
Characteristics for risk adjustment techniques
1. Risks with low frequency and high severity will result in higher risk adjustments than risks with high frequency and low severity
2. For similar risks, contracts with a longer duration will result in higher risk adjustments than those of a shorter duration
3. Risks with a wide probability distribution will result in higher risk adjustments than those risks with a narrower distribution
4. The less that is known about the current estimate and its trend, the higher the risk adjustment shall be
5. To the extent that emerging experience reduces uncertainty, risk adjustments will decrease and vice versa

• The premium allocation approach is regarded as an approximation to the building block approach
• Hence it is permitted, but not required, in those cases where certain eligibility criteria are fulfilled (see box)
• Used to simplify the measurement of the liability for remaining coverage
• Similar to unearned premium approaches that have historically been used
Eligibility criteriaAn insurer may apply the PAA when
• Doing so would produce measurements that are a reasonable approximation to those that would be produced applying the BBA; or
• The coverage period at initial recognition is 1 year or less.
Criteria 1 is not fulfilled if, at contract inception, the entity expects significant variability, during the period before a claim is incurred, in the fulfilment cash flows. Variability increases:
• With the extent of future cash flows relating to any options or other derivatives embedded in the contract after separation; or
• With the length of the coverage period of the contract.

View 1: Balance sheet
• Current value / economic picture• Market value (fair value) of financial assets• Fulfilment cash flows represent a current, updated
estimate of the amounts the company expects to collect and pay out, adjusted for risk and time value of money• Includes all related cash flows, including options
and guarantees• Volatile without asset-liability matching
View 2: Profit and loss account
• Long-term value generation • Insurance contracts revenue depicts the transfer of
