A Note from Ms. Donielle
With the completion of national 4-H week, I am re-minded of the great benefits one gains from being a 4-H member. We know 4-H is a great family pro-gram – kids have fun, meet new people, travel the world, exhibit projects and animals at the Fair, and attend camp. But the really amazing points are what most people may not realize.
Ms Kitty White, a 4-H Educator sums it up in her article "The Many Benefits of 4-H!" “We all know 4-H is great ….. but once you REALLY know the facts about 4-H you’ll be a believer for life!
Tufts University completed a study of over 7,000 youth and found that, in comparison with other youth, young people in 4-H: Experience greater educational achievements Have greater motivation and aspirations for
future education Are more than 3.3 times more likely to contrib-
ute to their communities Have significantly lower drug, cigarette, and
alcohol use Are 2.3 times more likely to exercise and be
physically active Are nearly 2 times more likely to go to college. “
These are just a few of the amazing results pub-lished in the Study of Positive Youth Development, and details of the study can be found at http://www.4-h.org/about/youth-development-research/positive-youth-development-study/. As we approach a new year I challenge each of you to bring a friend to your next 4-H meeting. Happy fall and congratulations on a wonderful fair season! Donielle Axline - Frederick County 4-H Educator
News from Ms. Rachel
I hope everyone had a worthwhile and enjoyable experience exhibit-ing their projects this past September at the 157th Great Frederick Fair. Your hard work throughout the year culminates at the fair, where you are able to showcase your projects for our broader Fred-erick County community. The educational value this provides to our 4-H’ers as well as to the many people visiting our barns and 4-H Building cannot be overstated. Well done and a huge thank you to all of the 4-H members, parents, club leaders, superintendents, and other volunteers and helpers who made this fair a success. As you wrap up from fair, remember to update your record book with all of your fair accomplishments, so that your record book is ready to submit in January.
We are also looking for teens ages 14 and up interested in serving as teen leaders at the Frederick County 4-H Camp this summer. Camp is an amazing opportunity to develop leadership skills, gain experi-ence working with kids, make lifelong friends, and have a summer full of fun while having a huge impact on the lives of youth. We hope you will consider joining us this year as either a camper or a camp teen leader!
As we head into the wonderful Fall season full of celebration and re-flection, I hope you will take a few moments to reflect upon your last year in 4-H and how you would like to focus your efforts in the com-ing year. This is also the perfect time of year to reach out to others in your community invite them to a club meeting. They can find out what 4-H has to offer and be ready to join come January 1st, when our new 4-H year will begin. I hope you have a wonderful Fall season!

The Alpha Alpaca club held our August meeting on Friday August 2nd. We discussed our July fun day which was a pool party, July 27th. The pool party was a lot of fun. We played games. swam, made ice cream, and had a lot of yum-my food. Demonstrations at the meeting were Leanza who told us about the life cycle of a frog and Severin who taught us all about ultimate Frisbee. We had a mandatory club meeting Sept 7. at the fair which was our September meet-ing, Phoebe did a demonstration, and important dates for the fair were discussed. The club had a very busy fair week with club members showing chickens, ducks, dairy goats, market goats, pigs, turkeys, and alpacas. Club member Cassandra, Cassie, was named best sportsman and Joni received reserved best sportsman. Megan received the highest points award. Alicia won best senior costume, she and her alpaca went as a bumble bee and beekeeper. Colton won best junior costume with a vet theme. The club and crowd also enjoyed the goat vs. alpaca portion of the competitions on Saturday Sept. 21. There was an obstacle competition, balloon and spoon race, and we even gave animal soccer a try. If you weren't there to witness the fun, you missed out! Our club has two important dates coming up in October and November. The first is October 19-20. Mr Rick's farm Whis-pering Meadow Alpacas will be having an open house both days. Similar to last year, there will be hayrides, hay maze, alpaca demonstrations, food and fun. This year we are working to expand it and make it better than ever! The sec-ond date of importance for us is Nov. 10th and 11th. This is the Maryland Fiber and Fleece Festival held at the Howard County Fairgrounds. Submitted by Breana club reporter

The 4-H Achievers
On August 1st, the 4-H Achievers had a blast at their annual Adventure Park USA trip. They brought along a friend to share the fun with. They raced in go-karts, sprayed each other in water bumper cars, played vir-tual reality, and laser tag. These guys had quite the adventure!
On September 5th, everyone brought their fair pro-jects (or brought pictures) to our meeting. We had a hand forged knife, paintings, pictures, and (pictures of) animals that were raised for the fair. We shared how we came up with each project idea and the adven-tures we experienced in bringing the project to it’s final form.
On November 16th, we are planning to attend the MD 4-H Volunteers' Association Regional Adult and Teen Volunteer Forum in Washington County. We are plan-ning on building our photograph skills. Come join us! For more information contact Wendy Leatherman at 240-409-5775 or [email protected] Thank you, Peyton and Cory Matejovich

During the first Friday of the Great Frederick Fair, three judges came together to make the difficult decision of who will serve as our Fred-erick County 4-H Royalty court for the upcom-ing year. Colin Shankle and Cheyenne Van Echo were chosen as our 4-H King and Queen. They started out their year at the fair by attending numerous livestock shows, auctions, and luncheons. However, Colin and Cheyenne can't do it alone - a whole court is needed to fulfill the roles of the 4-H Royalty.
Welcome our 2019-2020 Frederick County 4-H Royalty!
