Digital Surveying is a down hole surveying company that specialises in directional and geophysical survey for the exploration mining and civil engineering industry, utilising a big range of survey tools and equipment. Our services range from 24 hour call out to full time on site contracts, we utilise people, vehicles and equipment to perform our task. Our client base is widely spread in South Africa and Africa ranging from Botswana to Ghana. Digital Surveying are involved in new tool development testing and commercialising these tools. This is my current job Operation Manager, my team consists of 24 employees that reports to me, 4 engineers in charge they are responsible for their business units to conduct services to the mines and civil engineering industry, reporting to them is 16 surveyors who conduct the actual surveys responsible for the vehicles, equipment and producing data that will be analysed and sent to the client by our QC division. The Quality Assurance division, consist of 2 people, responsible for all the data received from the surveyors, they have to analyse and report on various aspects of the holes from direction to analysing geophysical structures and rock type in the earth crust. The training division are responsible for training

and upskilling our employees related to their functions and tasks, consists of 2 people. Lastly I have the stores reporting to me regarding our stock on consumables and controlling our movement of assets including asset management. I am responsible for the health and safety of our company, I am head of the health and safety committee and appointed on regulation 16.2 of the OCH ACT. Responsibility’s in all of these units are financial budgets, keeping track of all expenditure, operations financial reports and setting budgets, Operations do all the invoicing related to the service we provide co signing off on orders with my MD. HR, I’m responsible for the up held of all company policy and procedures revising and creating new procedures, all operational procedures regarding tool operation and job flow. Discipline related, written warnings to hearings etc. using labour law as guideline. I am involved with setting bonus structure for my team. I am responsible for maintenance on all vehicle and equipment (Assets).

I’m the link between the client and Digital Surveying relating to H & S, all service requirements and quality of service delivery. I manage all test and reports on development of all our new tools.

Overall management and responsibility for sub ordinance managers and fully operational business units in 7 different service units namely; Directional (2 business units), Geophysical dep, Bore hole radar dep, QC dep, Training dep and stores dep.

Management of and allocation of staff and equipment including performance appraisals and service quality.

Financial; Budgets, input budget processing, input cost analysis of contracts and price setting of contracts.

Administrating and formulating pricing policy for all business units.

Monthly cost analysis of all business units.

Ensure all managers have the necessary skill assistance and resources to complete their job function.

Contribute, uphold, maintain and implement company policy and procedures.

Constantly revive and enhance all operational and quality procedures.

Overall responsibility for client contracts and liaison including upholding high levels of customer satisfaction and service.

Leading Health and Safety committees enforcing and adhering to all mining and industrial rules and regulations concerning Health and Safety.

Compiling Training programs for all sub ordinates, all employees have to do in house and external training for employee development and company growth.

Project managing on all new projects; developing of new equipment from testing trough to commercialising.

Job overview Sa Metal is one of the biggest scrap metal company’s in South Africa ferrous and nonferrous, with Head offices in Cape Town and Johannesburg, branches across SA. SA Metal do not only process scrap metal but also produces their own rebar and copper billets in a steel factory located in Cape Town, they also have a division which is responsible for demolition and rehabilitation in the mining sector. I started off as an operations manager in Cape Town head office at their scrap processing plant on the nonferrous metals. I was head of the plant team and responsible for production, maintenance and employees. In my time there I compiled an operating manual for the plant general operations to increase productivity.

I was promoted to senior project manager for a demolition and rehabilitation project in Welkom Free State where I was in total control of all operations from HR, Finance, maintenance, safety, planning and complete tender process for each site. I was responsible to produce and transport scrap steel of 500 tons per month to Cape Town works.

Labour Management. Financial controls for entire project (approx. 5 sites) Industrial / Employee Relations. Occupational Health and Safety (Mining Industry). Management of Company Assets / Machinery (Plant, Equipment &

Reasons for Leaving: I was based in Welkom Free State I had to travel to JHB every weekend, I really enjoyed my job but costs was just too high with traveling. I received a higher offer and saw it as an opportunity to broaden my job experience.
