From the Principal  Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Ursula Frayne Catholic College,

FORGIVENESS: A “WEAPON” IN HIGH DEMAND

In the year 878 Alfred the Great, the first King of England, defeated the Danes at the Ba le  of Edington.  The Danes had pillaged and  murdered their way up and down England for years.  However, Alfred, instead of slaughter-ing his defeated enemy in an act of vengeance, took pity on them, fed them and offered them peace.  This act led to the conversion of the Danish King, Guthrum, and 29 of his chie ains; they were bap sed with Alfred as their spon-sor.  Too o en we can allow bi erness, resentment and hatred to blur our vision and eat away at us as a sort of self-cannibalism.  Our “unforgivingness” can affect those around us, can be passed on to the next genera on within families and even within countries.   Jesus said that people would recognise us as His disciples by the way we love one another: “And now I give you a new commandment: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. If you have love for one another, then everyone will know that you are my disciples” (John 13: 34,35).  One of the main ways in which love is expressed is in forgiveness and forgiveness is the way in which we demonstrate Christ’s presence and the way in which Chris ans make a real difference to the welfare of the world’s people.

FRAYNE NEWS VOLUME 31 ISSUE 18 / WEEK 9 TERM 2 / 26 JUNE 2020

The family of Gracilla Mar nez was caught up in one of the more recent conflicts in South America.  Her son was taken into confinement and eventually executed for protes ng against injus ce.  He surprised her at their last mee ng by saying to her, “Forgive them or they will be the victors”.  For the next 10 years Gracilla could think of nothing but hatred and revenge.  A friend coaxed her to a end a workshop on for-giveness during which she began a healing process.  Later she stated, “I only forgave when I saw how destruc ve my hate was, how it con-sumed my energies, crippled my friendships and disabled any good that I wanted to do. I wanted to be freed from the prison I had erected in my life. I saw, finally, the truth of my son’s last words, that when we return hatred to those who hate us, we fall into playing their game ac-cording to their rules – and do them the great favour of hur ng ourselves.”   A quick look around the world will illustrate how true these words are.  There is li le doubt that forgiveness is an important way in which the hatred between people, races and na ons can be absorbed, neutralised and brought to nothing.  More than ever the world needs the mes-sage of Christ’s “new commandments” to be proclaimed through the lives and influence of Chris ans – Christ’s disciples.   Forgiveness can be infec ous; the impact of our act of forgiveness towards another person can make them rethink their circumstance and perhaps lead to further forgiveness.  Of course, like most things, forgiveness begins “at home”; firstly, within ourselves to clean out the “baggage” we have been carrying around for perhaps years, then to our family, extended family and farther out.   Mahatma Gandhi once said that if everyone were to follow the “eye for an eye” principle of revenge, the whole world would go blind.  So, too, might it be said that if everyone were to prac se forgiveness what a splendid vision the world would offer.  So, let’s “do an Alfred”, dis-mantle our structures of bi erness, resentment and hatred, bring out our forgiveness and be Chris an in word and ac on.

RECENT INCIDENT

I write to advise that last Thursday (23 June 2020), staff detected a student smoking marijuana in the Duncan Street Gymnasium change-rooms during the recess break.  Unfortunately, this poor decision placed this young member of our community in serious breach of their Stu-dent Enrolment Agreement.  Ursula Frayne Catholic College takes such ma ers very seriously.  Following a thorough inves ga on, the College has acted in the best inter-est of our community and the student involved.  This type of incident is not part of the Frayne culture which is fostered through an individual collec ve commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of our young people.  Our College values of excellence, jus ce, compassion, hospitality, and respect provide us with a compass that guides all of us in the choices we make.  As a community Centred in Christ, we are unapologe c about the ethos that imbues everything we do.  Produc ve partnerships within and beyond our learning and faith sharing community, centred in Christ provide a strong network of connec-ons that can help educate and protect our young people against a range of harms including those associated with drugs, emo onal distress

and problem behaviours.  As such, I strongly encourage parents/carers to engage frequently with their children about drugs and drug related issues within a broader health context relevant to students’ concerns and stages of development.   With regards and best wishes.  Mr Geoff Mills Principal

SAINTS PETER AND PAUL

The Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul is on 29 June.  This feast honours the martyrdom in Rome of these two Apostles of Christ.  Peter and Paul were two very different men and they came to follow Christ in different  mes and ways.  While Peter was called by Christ at the begin-ning of His public Life, Paul was called a er His Resurrec on in a vision.  Both of them were normal and weak men, who either denied Christ or persecuted his followers.  However, the grace of Christ transformed them into His instruments to bring His message of life to all the  people.   Pope Francis said that both of them were witnesses of the transforma ve power of God's forgiveness through which all Chris ans can experi-ence a new beginning of peace and joy: "Peter denied the Lord, while Paul persecuted the Church of God, Jesus called them by name and changed their lives.  Only when we experience God’s forgiveness do we truly experience rebirth.  From there we start over, from forgiveness; there we rediscover who we really are: in the confession of our sins".  Peter and Paul understood that holiness does not consist in exal ng but rather in humbling oneself.  We can be encouraged by both of them because if Christ used them as they were, we too can be strength and used by God as we are.  Pope Francis explains that: “Throughout life, they preserved this humility, to the very end.  Peter died crucified upside down, since he did not consider himself worthy to imitate his Lord.  Paul was always fond of his name, which means ‘li le,’ and le  behind his birth name, Saul, the name of the first king of his people.”  In the presence of these witnesses, Pope Francis invites us to ask: “Do I renew daily my own encounter with Jesus?”  Then, let us ask for the grace not to be lukewarm Chris ans living by half measures, allowing our love to grow cold, and let us rediscover who we truly are through a daily rela onship with Jesus and through the power of his forgiveness, so we too can be instruments of God.  Fr Jesus Bello College Chaplain, Duncan Street Campus

Chaplain’s Reflection

YEAR 6 PUBLICATIONS COUNCIL

It is lovely to share the following ar cles by students from the Year 6 Publica ons Council as part of their Term Two Review:

Assemblies are Back and Online!

Well, COVID is s ll happening but on the bright side, Phase 3 is here and that means more assemblies!  It also means many other things like parents being welcomed back on campus grounds and Class Masses are back on. We trialed our first online assembly last week and a er some prac ce, the morning was a success!

Restric ons: Phase 3

On 11 June the impossible happened!  The Year 6’s went to mass!  They were the first class to be able to celebrate Mass since the closure in March.  The Mass was to celebrate Saint Barnabas.  To kick things off, we got to meet our new Parish Priest, Fr Nicholas, a great storyteller who was very entertaining and engaging.

We Speak to the SRC

We asked a few SRC Reps this ques on; “How do you feel about passing on you role to the new Semester Two representa ves?” The Year 6’s said that they are not too upset about the SRCs switching over because they get an extra term in the role.  The Year 4’s agreed that it is a really great idea as it will give them a chance to fully experience the role.  The Year 2’s also agreed that everything that’s going to happen is an amazing decision and all SRCs can’t wait for what the next term will bring them!

School Holidays Approaching

We interviewed a few of our teachers to see what was on their mind this week. We asked Mr Gallanagh about his ‘dream teaching day’.  He explained this would be a day where everyone learnt something.  His feelings about America’s educa on system is that he thinks Australia’s system is way be er because of the assessments.  Mrs Edmonds would like more free  me so she can a end her kids’ school events and travel more, and she hopes that she gives the Year 6’s a memorable final semester.  Ms Sampedro wishes she had more free  me so she  can learn instruments and travel more.  Her ‘dream day teaching’ would include a good prayer, guided reading and a maths lesson while  everyone cares for each other.
