Forge Division

The forge section has a variety of forging and ring rolling equipment to satisfy customer needs,

including:

Presses (hydraulic); 1000 ton, 1400 ton and 1500 ton open die forge press.

Hammers; 3 ton, 1.5 ton and 1 x 2ton open die forging hammers.

Ring mills; 3 Ring mills.

Expander Sizers; 2 Expander sizers are also used to ensure accurate ring roundness.

With the above equipment combined with a wealth of forging expertise we can provide our

customers with the following;

Bars/shafts from 100mm Ø to 850mm Ø by up to 7,5 meters in length either stepped or

parallel.

Gear blanks up to 2000mm Ø by 650mm high.

Various rings up to 2.8 meters in diameter.

Bushes up to 1700mm Ø by 1200mm long with various bore sizes.

Forgings from 10 to 10 000 kilograms

Our range of input material includes the popular grades of carbon and low/medium alloy steels of

the BS/EN, AISI/SAE and ASTM/ASME ranges. Selected grades of martensitic, austenitic and

duplex stainless steels are also kept in stock. Horizontal band saws with capacities of cutting up to

1000mm diameter are used for the preparation of feedstock to the forge.

For the client whose requirement warrants a ready to use component, our fully equipped machine

shop is always available to provide precision machining of components.

Heat Treatment

Frankwen Forge Heat treatment offers a wide spectrum of heat treatment processes for internal

work and for external customers.

Top hat furnaces are used for stress relieving, normalizing, annealing, through hardening and

tempering processes, backed up by a full range of straightening facilities.

Our quenching facilities include oil and water quenching up to 7.3 meters in length and 3,0

vertically.

We specialize in the following heat treatment processes:

Oil Quench and temper – Up to 7,3 meters long.

Water Quench and temper – Up to 7,3 meters long.

Normalizing – Up to 8 meters long.

Stress relieving – Sizes up to 8m x 3m x 1,5m.

Annealing - up to 8 meters long.

Solution Heat treatment of aluminium forgings.

We utilise an independent mechanical testing laboratory – Franktech Metallurgical Services on site

for verification of mechanical property compliance to customer Heat Treatment requirements.

Machine Shop

Our machine shop is able to rough machine as well as final machine to customer requirements. A

bevy of vertical boring mills, centre lathes, horizontal boring mills and radial arm drills are fully

tooled for almost every eventuality. We can machine up to 3 meters in diameter and proof machine

shafts up to 6 meters in length.

Our 3 & 5 axis CNC capabilities allow us to machine complex integrally re-enforced lip type

nozzles and final drill tube holes in plate and forged tube sheets to customers’ drawings and

specifications. The CNC machining is the pride of this department, and a must for precision

machining of components and accurate drilling of tube sheets, baffle plates and flanges.

Our double gantry machining centre allows us to machine and drill 2.3m diameter tube sheets and

we can load forgings weighing up to ten tons for machining.

The majority of our machined items are used in the Petrochemical and marine industry (locally and

internationally) conforming to required international specifications i.e ASME ANSI B16.5 &

B16.47 series A & B, British standard & Din standard.

Our measuring equipment is calibrated to scheduled frequencies and is traceable to international

standards.

Product is released by Quality Control, once all the required tests have been conducted to prove full

compliance to customer’s requirements which may include completed Quality Control Plans and

associated 3.1 and 3.2 certification as defined by the customer.

Franktech Metallurgical Services

To enhance our services to our clients, mechanical testing equipment was purchased in 2001. This

was followed by a universal testing machine, impact tester, microscopes, hardness testers and a host

of metallurgical sample preparation equipment resulting in a fully-fledged laboratory being

available and capable of mechanical testing, metallographic or a complete metallurgical evaluation/

investigation for every eventuality.

Due to market demand for expertise and laboratory facilities, an independent entity known as

FRANKTECH METALLURGICAL SERVICES was established which has SANAS accreditation

to ISO/IEC 17025:2005. The scope of accreditation and non scope activities are detailed below:

SANAS Scope activities:
