With the onset of spring comes good news, which indicates that the economy is growing and statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor show that job opportunities in the area of accounting and finance are expected to grow exponentially between 2010 and 2020 – faster than most other professional areas. AN UPDATE OF FRANKLIN UNIVERSITY’S DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING, FINANCE, AND ECONOMICS: ACTIVITIES, PROGRAMS AND INFORMATION

Hello Students!

Spring is finally here! Recently I traveled to Orlando for a meeting and when I returned to Columbus, the trees and shrubs were in full bloom. While Florida is generally warmer than Columbus all year long, the change in seasons is not as apparent or dramatic as it is in the Midwest. With the onset of spring comes good news, which indicates that the economy is growing and statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor show that job opportunities in the area of accounting and finance are expected to grow exponentially between 2010 and 2020 – faster than most other professional areas.

Positions in Accounting are expected to grow 18%, Finance 26%, Financial Planning an astounding 66%, Economics 20%, and for Information Systems Auditing, there are approximately eight (8) openings for every one (1) graduate.

The expected growth of the accounting and finance related professions also requires edcuators to review the relevancy of their academic curriculum and programs to ensure that graduates have the proper knowledge and skills required by today’s employers. A review of curriculum relevancy involves many sources including, among others, a review by practicing professionals from various areas of the professional community.

The Accounting, Finance and Economic Programs have advisory boards consisting of accomplished professionals who meet each year. These professionals provide, among other things, great insight into emerging trends in the profession and which skills graduates need in order to be successful in their chosen profession.

Additionally, faculty members learn about changes in the various accounting and finance related professions by actively participating in the professional community, serving on various boards and committees.

Franklin University’s faculty members’ active participation in professional organizations and their engagement with professionals through advisory boards provides for a highly informed assessment of the trends in the profession and the needs of employers hiring graduates. This engagement provides for enriched course curriculum that it is relevant for graduates entering their chosen professional field.

In this light, I hope you view your education at Franklin as an opportunity to grow your skills and knowledge in a way that positively impacts your career aspirations and provides a hopeful future for you and your loved ones.

Konar Speaks at CommencementVenkatachalam (Venky) Konar, receiving his M.S in Accounting was the graduating Student Speaker at Winter 2013 Graduation Ceremony. He works as a Manager of Solutions Development for Greif Inc. A financial and management accountant by education, Konar worked in various positions in the fields of accounting, costing, and management information systems before moving into Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system implemen-tation.

Prior to joining the online MSA program at Franklin, Konar completed his bachelor’s degree in Commerce in 1992 from Mumbai University and is a graduate from the Institute of Cost Accountants of India. Originally from India, Konar moved to the USA in 2003 to accept a job in ERP consulting. Konar lives in Delaware, Ohio with his wife Saras and two children, Oviya and Shubh.

Finn Presents at Credits to the Profession Speaker Series and Recevies AwardApril 3, 2013 -- Professor Wendi Finn was this year’s honoree for the annual Credits to the Profession award. Finn has a bachelor’s degree in accounting, a master’s degree in systems security, and she is CPA and CISA certified. She is a professor here at Frank-lin University, and in 2004, she founded IS Security Solutions, LLC to assist organizations in control consciousness, security awareness and process improvement. For her presentation at this event, Finn spoke about the importance of information technol-ogy and auditing. After her presentation, a Credits to the Profes-sion plaque was presented to her in recognition of her achieve-ments and contributions to the accounting profession.

Houts Earns Certificate of Financial PlanningCongratulations goes to Brian Houts, CFP®, a recent graduate from the Financial Planning Program, who suc-cessfully earned the Certified Financial Planner designation in March 2013. Brian is currently a financial advisor at PNC Investments.

Experienced accounting faculty Alan Rogers, CPA joined Franklin’s Accounting Program team on July 16, 2012. Professor Rogers has nearly 25 years teaching experience at the university level and over 14 years of practical accounting experience. He serves on the Accounting Advisory Board at Columbus State Community College. Professor Roger’s earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, and Accounting from Franklin University, a Master of Business Administration from The Ohio State University, and is currently working on his Doctor of Business Admin. degree from Walden University.

Dr. Martina Peng has recently been working on the University’s Financial Literacy Week (4/8-4/10), the student mentor program sponsored by Financial Planning Association, and Franklin’s first Financial Planning Speaker’s Series. Dr. Peng’s research interest focuses on individual and household financial decision making, financial behavior analysis, and financial education policy. Dr. Peng is an active member of the Financial Planning Association Central Ohio Chapter (FPA), a member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA), and a member of the Society of Financial Service Professionals (FSP).

Dr. Tom Hrubec is the Program Chair of the undergraduate Accounting, Forensic Accounting, and Business Forensics programs. He is currently working on the Accounting and Forensic Accounting programs at two new locations in Cleveland, OH and one new location in Beavercreek, OH. He currently serves on the planning committee for two upcoming fraud conferences. The first one is the “Emerging Trends in Fraud Investigation & Prevention Conference” scheduled for June 3-4, 2013 in Columbus, Ohio. The second is the “Targeting Fraud: Preserving Integrity Conference” scheduled for November 6-7, 2013 in Columbus, OH. He is also developing a healthcare accounting course for Franklin’s new Master of Healthcare Admin. program.

Dr. Bruce Campbell, Program Chair for Financial Management, participated in the 28th Annual Buckeye Financial Forum hosted by the Central Ohio Association for Financial Professionals held in Columbus in April 2013. This Certified Treasury Professional (CTP)-sanctioned event was attended by over 100 finance and treasury professionals and included sessions on managing global liquidity, foreign exchange risk management, SWIFT, and the anticipated implications of Dodd-Frank for derivatives trading, hedging, and valuation.

Dr. Charles Saunders is an audit specialist responsible for courses in Auditing, Forensic Accounting, Enterprise Risk Analysis & Management, and the capstone course for the new B.S. in Information Systems Auditing (ISA) program. He is a faculty advisor for Franklin’s business honorary, Sigma Beta Delta. In April 2013, he led two continuing professional education events on ERM for the Institute of Internal Auditors Lousville, KY Chapter; Dr. Saunders facilitated a Chief Audit Execu-tives Roundtable discussion and led a one-day seminar for members of the IIA. In May, Dr. Saunders plans to present a paper at the AERA Conference in San Francisco.

Dr. Thomas Seiler was recently appointed Dean of the College of Business. He is active with the Ohio Society of CPAs Foundation Programs Committee and is involved with the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) at both a local and national level. He sits on the IIA’s Board of Trustees for the Central Ohio Chapter and is Vice Chair of the IIA’s North American Board’s Regional Conference Committee. Dr. Seiler recently served as a judge for Central Ohio’s “Top Corporate Counsel,” sponsored by Business First. His other projects include creating new programs such as Risk Management & Insurance and Business Data Analytics.

Dr. Souren Soumbatiants is the Program Chair for Business Economics. In addition to chairing the program, he serves as the Lead Faculty for MBA 723 Managerial Economics. Dr. Soumbatiants will be travelling to Wroclaw, Poland to teach a section of the course in June 2013. Additionally, Dr. Soumbatiants is working on various multimedia projects for the Business Economics and several other programs.Follow him on Twitter @

Monica Dupree has joined the department as an academic assistant. She has been employed at Franklin University for two years. Monica received her Bachelor of Science in Business Forensics from Franklin University in May 2011 and looks forward to her new responsibilites in the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics.

Spotlight!...on Adjunct Faculty

Clayton Benton is currently work-ing on both the American College CHFC designation and the Ameri-can Society of Pension Profession-als and Actuaries Administrator designation. He is a Compliance Consultant for Retirement Plans at Nationwide Financial. Clayton has a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and Psychology from Ohio Wesleyan University, and Juris Doctorate The Ohio State University. He began

teaching at Franklin almost six years ago and enjoyes getting to meet the breadth of students and their diverse backgrounds and professional experiences. Clayton’s advice for students? “Stay focused on what you are doing right now instead of worrying about what you need to get done later, and you will be shocked by how much you can accomplish.”

Michael J. Miller, CMA, CFM is a Professor at the School of Ac-countancy and Graduate School Company at Sullivan University in Louisville, KY. His most recent educational achievent is a Doctorate in Business Administration from Ar-gosy University in Sarasota, FL. Dr. Miller started teaching at Franklin University in the Fall of 2010. One of his professional interests is seeing how different teaching platforms

impact student learning. Students have more on their ‘plate’ with work, family and school responsibilities than in the past. Therefore, time management skills are very important for today’s students. Dr. Miller would advise students to look at their own skill set and current circumstances and see which learning plat-form makes the most sense for each course that they take.

Christina Lowery, CPA has been an adjunct professor at Franklin University since 2006. She has an Associate Degree of Science from Terra Community College, a Bachelor of Science Degree from Heidelberg College and a Master of Business from Indiana Wesleyan University. Ms. Lowery teaches face-to-face courses and thinks that an opportunity to teach is a privi-

lege and she appreciates everything she learns from students. The most important advice Christina has for students is to ask questions, in class or at work. By asking a question people are not only helping themselves, but also other students or co-workers who had the same questions but did not ask them. Ms. Lowery enjoys reading and going for walks with her friends and grandchildren.

Deborah Cummings has taught at Franklin University since February 2011 and currently holds the posi-tion of Senior Program Manager at Batelle, Inc. Deborah has an MBA from the Ohio State University, along with a B.B.A and B.A. from Ohio University. She enjoys being able to share the knowledge she’s gained through her professional career in the classroom, and to learn from her students as well. Deborah’s advice for Franklin

University students is to be open-minded about new areas of study and exploration—whether or not you believe it is directly applicable to your degree, the experiences and knowledge gained are directly applicable to becoming a global citizen. She has two young daughters, ages five and three, that keep both her husband and herself constantly on their toes, and as a result she is now a certified expert in all things related to princesses and My Little Ponies!

Sherry Kamradt has taught at Franklin University since 2006. She has Bachelor of Science from the University of Missouri, a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science from University of Miami; and a Masters of Account-ing from Florida Atlantic University. What mrs. Kamradt likes most about teaching at Franklin Universi-ty is the flexibility of online teaching

and the privilege of working with Franklin students. Her advice for current students is: “Don’t ever hesitate to ask questions.” Sherry has two hobbies, which are gardening and biking.

Several students majoring in financial planning were selected to participate in the Student Financial Planning Men-tor Program sponsored by Central Ohio Financial Planning Association (FPA) in Winter 2013. The program’s purpose is to match students who are enthusiastically interested in the financial services industry with professionals who are enthusiastically participating in the industry. Mentors and mentees establish a lasting bond that gives students the opportunity to learn firsthand “what it’s really like” to work in the finan-cial planning profession. According to several students, the program is certainly a positive experience:

“Having no personal contacts in the financial planning field, I took advantage of the FPA Mentor Program offered this past semester. I called my mentor, Shawn Ballinger, (also a Franklin graduate) and we met for breakfast. I had sent a series of blatantly personal questions concerning

fees, working conditions, and client per-sonalities. Shawn professionally answered these inquiries as well as a continuing series foisted upon him. We met a second time for lunch and a third at his office. And what an office! The opportunity to sit down and to open converse with someone doing their job, and enjoying it, was both enlightening and encouraging. Thank you for the opportunity!”

“Paul Dolce was instrumental in helping me solidify my decision to become a finan-cial planner. Not only did he help debunk some myths I had about the profession (you had to be an entrepreneur or must retain your own client book) but also, he walked me through some example client portfolios to get a sense of real world ap-plication. Paul also invited me to several fi-nancial planning meetings such as NAPFA and the FPA of Central Ohio for network-ing and educational opportunities. If you

are a current financial planning student, I would highly recommend participating in the mentorship program. The program will help you gain real world experience and make connections with other financial planners.”

Financial Literacy Week

Franklin University held its first Financial Literacy Week on April 8-11, 2013. The event included a series of workshops and events for students to learn more about managing student debt and personal finances. The daily workshops covered topics including Budgeting & Cash Management, Managing Credit & Identity Theft, Retirement Planning Basics, and Student Loan and Repayment. The information table was staffed by student affairs and financial aid staff members that demonstrated how to access student loan history/service information through the National Student Loan Data System.

May 2013 - As you may have noticed, undergraduate Academic Advising has undergone some changes in the way that we work with students. We have shifted to a team advising model that will allow us to assist students in the most efficient and effective way possible. In this model, students will work with a group of advi-sors rather than one specific advisor. This will allow us to provide you the flexibility to meet with any advisor on your advising team with availability that works for your schedule, or if you choose, you can schedule an appointment with a specific advisor on your

advising team. Emails should still be directed to [email protected].

If you are planning to graduate after summer term, there are some important details to note. Every Franklin student must complete a graduation application to receive a diploma, even if you do not plan to participate in the commencement ceremony. The gradu-ation application can be found through the Web Advisor link in your my.franklin.edu account and there is a $55 fee due with your application. The deadline for graduation applications for the Summer 2013 term is no later than 6 p.m. on May 20, 2013. A $100 late application fee will apply after this date, and applications will not be accepted after June 3, 2013.

Registration for Fall 2013 begins July 1, 2013 and the first courses of fall term begin August 19, 2013. You may register for courses until 10 days prior to a course start date. We encourage you to be mindful of those dates as you plan your course selec-tion and registration for the fall term. If you have any questions about your remaining requirements, you can review your Degree Audit through Web Advisor in your my.franklin.edu account. Tutoring is available online and in-person in Fisher Hall on the Main Campus for Ac-counting 215 and 225, Finance 301, and MBA 733 and 737. See the complete schedule on the SLC Website.

For Accounting 215, Account-ing 225, Finance 301, MBA 733, and MBA 737, the SLC is available Monday 4-8 pm (walk-in lab), Tuesday 7-9 pm (online appointments), Wednesday 4-8 pm (walk-in lab) and 7-9 pm (online ap-pointments), and Saturday 10 am-2 pm (walk-in lab) and 9 am-noon (online appoint-ments).

Structured Learning Assistance for Accounting 225

Students enrolled in Account-ing 225 for summer term are also encouraged to participate in the SLC’s new academic support program for Ac-counting students, Structured

Learning Assistance (SLA). SLA is a weekly review de-signed to help students master the course concepts. For Sum-mer 2013 term:•SLA for Accounting 225 will be held on Thursdays, from 8-10 pm. •SLA sessions are held online via Franklin Live. •Recordings of past SLA sessions are available to all students on the SLC website.

Testing Information

The SLC provides compre-

hensive testing services for students who have proc-tored exams in their courses. The testing center on Main Campus is open Monday – Thursday from 10 am – 8 pm; Friday 10 am – 4 pm; and Saturday 9 am – 5 pm. We have another local branch in Dublin. Dublin’s testing center is open Thursday from 3 pm – 7 pm; and select Saturdays from 8 am – 12 pm.

In addition to providing test proctoring, we are the central point of coordination for most Franklin testing. If a distance student is taking proctored tests at a non-Franklin loca-tion and has questions, we are happy to assist them through the process. Proficiency Exams

Proficiency Exams allow students to earn course credit by examination. We offer both the CLEP and the DSST exams in Financial Account-ing. Students can take one of these exams to test out of Accounting 215. We also offer a FUPE exam in Managerial Accounting to give students the opportunity to test out of Accounting 225. More information about proficiency testing is available on the SLC website.
