Body Mass Index for Ohio’s Third Grade Students A review of the Report on the Body Mass Index of Ohio’s Third Graders, conducted by the Ohio Department of Health, found that childhood obesity is one of the most important public health issues in Ohio with more than 30 percent of children and adolescents classified as overweight or obese. In a 2009-2010 study, it was reported that 25.4% of third grade students living in Medina County, where Franklin, Isham Memorial, Overlook and Valley View Elementary Schools are located, have a prevalence of being overweight or obese. A map showing the percentage of overweight and obese third graders by county can be found in Appendix A. Through physical activity, such as walking or biking to and from school, or educating youth about the importance of an active lifestyle, ODOT’s Safe Routes to School Program hopes to foster awareness and prevention to combat this serious public health issue.

SECTION 2: OUR SRTS VISION
The Wadsworth Safe Routes to School planning team is committed to improving our students’ health and safety one step and one pedal at a time. We will identify unique and sustainable solutions to parents, students, teachers and our community in order to facilitate and encourage increases in the number of students walking and bicycling to school. These solutions include:
Implementation of safety, quality and accessibility improvements to address deficiencies in the physical infrastructure of identified school walking and bicycling routes; and
Introduction of dedicated and targeted programs designed to reduce vehicular traffic at schools and improvement of the local environment.

Intersections of Main Street and Takacs Drive and Main Street and Santee Court.
There is an advance school speed limit warning sign with flashers and school crosswalk signing package in place for both approaches of Main Street. The advance sign package on the Takacs Drive approach needs to be upgraded to match the approaches on Main Street. There is a marked crosswalk to cross Main Street south of Takacs Drive and a marked crosswalk for Takacs Drive. This intersection is a dangerous school crossing. Also, there are broken sidewalks, non-compliant curb ramps, and insufficient signing and markings at the intersection of Main Street and Santee Court.
Install an RRFB (Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon) sign assembly at the intersection for the crossing of Main Street at Takacs Drive; along with appropriate advance signing. Upgrade the advance sign package on Takacs Drive to match the advance school speed limit warning signs and school crosswalk signing package on both approaches of Main Street. Upgrade sidewalk curb ramps to ADA standards and add new crosswalk marking on both crosswalks. Also, repair sidewalks, repaint crosswalk, replace curb ramps, and upgrade signing package at the intersection of Main Street and Santee Court.

Parents and staff at Franklin, Isham Memorial, Overlook and Valley View Elementary Schools, the City of Wadsworth and the Wadsworth Safe Routes to School planning team are joining together to improve safety and encourage more students to walk and bicycle to school. By implementing our Safe Routes to School Travel Plan, our vision is committed to improving our students’ health and safety one step and one pedal at a time.
The undersigned are fully supportive of Franklin, Isham Memorial, Overlook and Valley View Elementary School’s Safe Routes to School Travel Plan and program, and pledge to support their efforts and provide resources as appropriate.

961192 I ALWAYS WALK WITH MY CHILD OR DRIVE. THEY ARE TOO YOUNG TO WALK ALONE... THE MAIN REASONIS POTENTIAL CHILD ABDUCTION/STRANGERS.
961206 MY CHILD WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO WALK OR BIKE TO SCHOOL D/T THE DISTANCE WE LIVE FROMSCHOOL AND B/C OF THE MAJOR ROUTE WE LIVE ON.
961232 I FEEL SAFE TO LET MY DAUGHTER WALK BECAUSE OF MR. ELLIOT (THE CROSSING GUARD).
961249 VALLEY VIEW CURRENTLY LACKS A BIKE RACK SO BIKING ISN'T PRACTICAL. WE APPRECIATE MR ELLIOTTHAT CROSSING GUARD GREATLY. WITHOUT HIM I WOULD NOT ALLOW MY DAUGHTERTO WALK.
961270 DECISION WOULD CHANGE AS CHILDREN GET OLDER IF WE LIVED CLOSER.
961283 OUR KIDS WALK TO SCHOOL W/ OTHER CHILDREN OR ADULTS.
961290 THE DECIDING FACTOR FOR ME IS HAVING A CIS STUDENT WHO HAS SCHOOL STARTING & ENDING ATTHE SAME TIME. I CHOOSE TO NOT HAVE HIM RIDE THE BUS THEREFORE I MUST DRIVE BOTH CHILDREN. IWON'T HAVE MY DAUGHTER WALK WHILE I'M DRIVING HIM OR NOT HOME. I HAVE THE ABILITY TO DRIVEMY KIDS SO I WILL. WE ALWAYS WALKED WHEN THEY WERE BOTH AT VV THANK GOD FOR JACK WITHTHE KIDS WALKING ALONE ON WEST! HE IS THE BEST.
961300 WE WOULD WALK TO SCHOOL IF WE LIVED CLOSER.
961331 IN QUESTION 9 I WOULD ONLY LET WALK WITH OTHER KIDS. NEVER BY THEMSELVES.
961346 WE WOULD ALLOW HER TO WALK IF WE LIVED CLOSER TO SCHOOL
961347 QUESTION #9 - ONLY WITH A GROUP OF KIDS
961198 IT IS HEALTHY GOOD EXERCISE BUT THE DISTANCE & TRAFFIC WILL NOT CHANGE.
961201 WE HAVE NO PLANS TO MOVE ANYWHERE CLOSE TO AN APPROPRIATE WALKING DISTANCE TO MY SONSSCHOOL.
961220 WE JUST LIVE TOO FAR FROM ANY OF THE SCHOOLS.
961229 MY CHILD HAS AUTISM AND LIVES MANY MILES FROM THE SCHOOL.
961243 OUR HOME IS MORE THAN 2 MILES FROM ALL OF THE SCHOOLS. IF CLOSER I WOULD BE OK WITH MYSON BIKING/WALKING TO SCHOOL WITH FRIENDS.
961254 CROSSING GUARDS ARE GREAT SIDEWALKS ARE FINE. DO NOT WANT CHILD TO WALK ALONE TOSCHOOL. OK WITH GROUP OF OTHERS.
961256 I WAS ALLOWING MY CHILD TO WALK HOME ON OCCASION UNTIL HE HAD A PROBLEM WITH ANOTHERCHILD AT SCHOOL. HIS SAFETY COMES FIRST!
961315 MY KIDS GET ENOUGH EXERCISE - WALKING OR RIDING TO SCHOOL IS NOT SOMETHING I'D EVER-EVERCONSIDER BECAUSE SAFETY CONCERNS.
961332 WOULD ALLOW CHILD TO WALK/RIDE BIKE BUT DISTANCE TO SCHOOL IN TOO GREAT
961342 MY DECISION TO PERMIT CHILDREN TO WALK OR BIKE RIDE TO SCHOOL WOULD CHANGE AS THEY GREWOLDER (GR. 7+) IF WE LIVE CLOSER.
961222 WE LIVE ON THE NORTH END. WALKING IS NOT POSSIBLE DUE TO THE LACK OF SIDEWALKS ON RIDGEHEAVY TRAFFIC IN THE GREAT OAKS/I-76 AREA AND THE LONG DISTANCE TO THE NEAREST SCHOOL.
961257 MY KIDS WALKED TO AND FROM SCHOOL EVERYDAY FOR THE PAST FOUR YERAS WHEN THEY HAD ABABYSITTER WHO LIVED ON HIGH STREET. NOW THAT WE NO LONGER USE THAT SITTER THEY AREDRIVEN TO AND FROM SCHOOL.
961344 SHE IS WALKING DISTANCE FROM OUR HOME BUT WE EITHER DRIVE OR WALK WITH HER. SHE ALSOGOES TO A BABYSITTER & RIDES A BUS FROM THERE.
961199 I AM IN COLLEGE RIGHT NOW AKRON UNIVERSITY.
961231 WE UTILIZE BEAR CUB SO BUSSING IS A MUST & WE APPRECIATE THE SERVICE!
961238 MORE ADULT CROSSING GUARDS AT INTERSECTIONS CLOSER TO SCHOOL WOULD HELP! 4TH GRADESEEMS TO BE TO YOUNG TO HAVE THAT RESPONSIBILITY FROM MY EXPERIENCE! HELPS BUILDINDEPENDENCE AND CONFIDENCE AND RESPONSIBILITY
961246 JIMMY LIVE STOO FAR TO BIKE IF WE LIVED CLOSER. HE COULD BIKE TO SCHOOL.
961268 WE ALWAYS WALK TO AND FROM SCHOOL DURING NICE WEATHER. AS IT GETS COLDER WE DRIVE MOREOFTEN.
961308 IF WE LIVED CLOSER TO THE SCHOOL I WOULD FEEL COMFORTABLE W/ MY CHILD(REN) WALKING TOSCHOOL I DID STARTING IN 1ST (FIRST) GRADE.
961330 SIDEWALKS NEEDED ON RIMER RD FROM THE SECOND EXIT FROM WEATHERSTONE DEVELOPMENTTHANK YOU!
961348 MY KIDS CROSS THE INTERSTATE. WOULD NOT WANT THEM WALKING.
961358 SAFETY IS BIGGEST FACTOR TO WALK OR RIDE TO SCHOOL. TOO MUCH TRAFFIC & CROSSING OVERFREEWAY IS DANGEROUS.
961203 I LIVE TOO FAR FOR MY CHILDREN TO WALK/BIKE TO/FROM SCHOOL - THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE/OPTION INOUR HOME.
961204 WE LIVE TO FAR AWAY TO EVER WALK OR BIKE HOWEVER IF WE LIVED CLOSER I WOULD ALLOW IT AFTER1ST GRADE.
961267 WE LIVE TOO FAR TO CONSIDER WALKING. OUR BUS DRIVER IS VERY SAFETY CONSCIENCE.
961326 BECAUSE OF WHERE WE LIVE I DON'T THINK OUR CHILDREN WILL EVER WALK/BIKE TO ANY OF THESCHOOLS. DISTANCE/TRAFFIC WILL ALWAYS BE AN ISSUE FOR US. QUESTION #9 - SHE HAS TO CROSS ABUSY INTERSECTION/HIGHWAY
961328 I WOULD NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE ALLOWING MY CHILDREN TO WALK UNATTENDED. THANK YOU.
961247 IT IS TOO FAR AND NOT SAFE FOR MY CHILD TO WALK TO WALK TO SCHOOL - NO SIDEWALKS AT ALL
961262 WALKING/BIKING TO ANY WADSWORTH CITY SCHOOL FROM OUR HOME IS JUST NOT SAFE ESPECIALLYDURING HIGH TRAFFIC HOURS.
961273 BUSINES DISTRICT AND INTERSTATE ARE BETWEEN OUR HOME AND SCHOOL.
961334 THIS SURVEY DOES NOT REALLY APPLY TO OUR CHILDREN GIVEN THE DISTANCE WE LIVE FROMSCHOOL. THANKS!
961259 MY CHILDREN RIDE THE BUS. I WISH ALL PARENTS KNEW THEIR CHILDREN WERE THAT SAFE COMING &GOING TO SCHOOL
961289 I WOULD NEVER LET MY CHILDREN WALK OR BIKE TO SCHOOL. THERE ARE TOO MANY CREEPS ANDSEXUAL PREDATORS. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!
961349 THIS SURVEY WAS NOT GOOD FOR US AS THE BOYS BOTH RIDE THE BUS. THANKS!
961260 UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS NOTHING NOW THAT CAN BE DONE FOR CHILD SAFETY WALKING OR BIKINGTO SCHOOL OR FROM SCHOOL.
961322 WE LIVE IN THE TOWNSHIP AREA SO WALKING TO SCHOOL IS NOT AN OPTION.

What is Safe Routes to School?
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a national and international movement to create safe, convenient and fun opportunities for children to bicycle and walk to and from schools.
What is Safe Routes to School?
The program encourages and enables students in grades K through 8 to safely walk and bicycle to and from school.
“About one block from the school the sidewalk disappears and sometimes reappears across the street. Students have to walk through yards or walk in the street on their way to school and back home.”
Abbie Leslie, West Elementary School
Lancaster, Ohio
Why Safe Routes to School Matters
“This picture shows a bird’s eye view of an uneven sidewalk about two blocks from West Elementary. I think this sidewalk should be leveled out to make it safer for everyone.”
Christian Lauderbaugh, West Elementary School
Lancaster, Ohio
Why Safe Routes to School Matters
Safe Routes to School Goals
Goals 1. Improve the environment around
schools to encourage walking and bicycling to and from school.
2. Expand the school’s curriculum and activities to include safety and education programs for pedestrians and cyclists.
3. Hold events to encourage walking and Bicycling.
The 5 E’s: Improving School Safety
1. EDUCATE students and parents regarding safe non-motorized travel.
2. ENCOURAGE students to safely walk or bike to and from school.
3. ENFORCE rules and laws to keep pedestrians and bicyclists safe.
4. ENGINEER environmental changes for safe passage.
5. EVALUATE the impact of SRTS.
Developing the School Travel Plan
Start a SRTS program in your community by developing a School Travel Plan:
1. Bring the right people together.
2. Gather information and identify issues.
3. Identify solutions. 4. Implement your plan.
Developing the School Travel Plan
The School Travel Plan was Developed by the SRTS Team by completing the following tasks:
1. Held Discussions with School Administrators 2. Reviewed Parent Surveys 3. Collected Student Travel Tallies 4. Prepared School Population Maps 5. Conducted Walk Audits 6. Observed Arrival and Dismissal of Students 7. Reviewed Crash Data
Overview of the School Travel Plan

Overview of the School Travel Plan
The Vision Statement The Wadsworth Safe Routes to School planning team is committed to
improving our students’ health and safety one step and one pedal at a time. We will identify unique and sustainable solutions to parents, students, teachers and our community in order to facilitate and encourage increases in the number of students walking and bicycling to school. These solutions include:
• Implementation of safety, quality and accessibility improvements to address deficiencies in the physical infrastructure of identified school walking and bicycling routes; and
• Introduction of dedicated and targeted programs designed to reduce vehicular traffic at schools and improvement of the local environment.
