"I'm doing a few more of the iconicimagery," says Livingston. "I stayed
away from that in the past, but now I'mpainting things like the Flatiron Building, the Queensborough Bridge, the ChryslerBuilding. People reallv seem ro gravirare
toward them. These are really wonderful
things, the design is wonderful and there
is a reason they are so famous. Thisgroup of paintings just puts my take on
those buildings."Livingston is also finding that much
of the time, the heroic views that manyof these buildings are known for are

gone or have been blocked by signage,
storefronts or more modern structures."You can't see them anymore,"
says Livingston. "Standing next to the
Queensborough Bridge, trams, signage
and buildings are now in the way andyou cant get the same views you used toget. \7hat I like to do is a mixture of theold and the new, looking from Queensback to Manhattan, but the view, withthe buildings in the background, is notwhat it looks like right now."
Livingston wants to emphasize thatwhile he edits the scene and makes theviews as comprehensive as possible, these aren't just paintings based on oldphotographs.
"I just want to show less clutter,Iess of the blight of moderniry" says
Livingston. 'All of these structures are
Iarger than life, and I want to show that. They are just so in your face with thedesign of them."
Livingston also takes liberties withcolor to make sure the structures have
the look he is after."If something has a certain general
color field, I dont necessarily followthat," says Livingston. "Color is rootedin how a certain amount of light mighteffect the color. Itt a fine line and ifyou take it too far it becomes unreal, cartoony or weird. I experiment withcolor and light patterns, but I'm stilla realist." o

"Francis brings a new and
unique perspective to
Iandscape painting in that
he makes the ordinary
extraordinary. Whether
itt through the heroic
perspectives he depicts in
his urban Iandscapes or his
unusual and vibrant palette,
Francis Ioads up his brush with
atypical collections of colors
and puts them all down at
once with the swipe ofhis brush.'
