Tyre Sales in France to Cross 50 Million Units by 2020
Rising automobile sales, growing production and improving macroeconomic outlook to drive France tyre marketsize.
According to TechSci Research report, “France Tyre Market Forecast and Opportunities, 2020”, tyre sales in Franceare anticipated to cross 50 million units by the end of 2020. Growth in the market is anticipated on account ofimproving macroeconomic scenario, rising average selling prices of tyres, growing vehicle fleet and favorablegovernment policies such as low interest rates. Furthermore, with growing internet penetration, various e-commerce websites are offering tyres with attractive deals and offers, which is also positively influencing thecountry’s tyre market.
France tyre market is majorly dominated by various tyre manufacturing giants such as Michelin, Goodyear Dunlop,Continental, Bridgestone, etc. Being a domestic player, Michelin is familiar with the local market scenario, andhence has an edge over other foreign players operating in the country. Region-wise, in 2014, Northern Franceaccounted for largest volume share in the country’s tyre market, and the same trend is anticipated to continuethrough 2020. Passenger car segment is forecast to dominate France tyre market over the next five years owing toincreasing passenger car sales, expanding passenger car fleet and growing purchasing power of the consumers.
“During 2010 - 2014, due to the impact of Eurozone crisis, automobile sector in the country could not deliver to itsfull potential, and consequently, automotive production declined during the same period. However, withcomparatively stable macroeconomic scenario, automobile production and sales are anticipated to grow in thecoming year, which is expected to boost tyre market in France during forecast period. Moreover, the country’sreplacement tyre demand is anticipated to grow at a higher pace in comparison to the OEM tyre demand over thecourse of next five years.” said Mr. Vishal Sain, Consultant with TechSci Research, a research based globalmanagement consulting firm.

For the preparation of France tyre report, bottom up model has been used, which has been later crossvalidated by using top down approach.
Tyre Production
TechSci Research has mapped production capacities of almost all tyre manufacturing units in France. Withthe help of a series of primary research surveys of all the major tyre manufacturing companies in France, followed by cross validation through secondary sources such as company annual reports and industryassociations. TechSci Research has been successful in identifying the production capacities of each tyreplant as well as their respective plant locations, establishment dates and type of tyres manufactured.
Vehicle Sales & Fleet Size
The basic data points that are needed for the analysis of France tyre market are the historical, currentand forecast figures for vehicle sales and fleet size. Data for fleet size has been extracted through variousgovernment sources and credible data portals. TechSci Research has maintained a database for vehicleproduction, sales and fleet size for each vehicle segment (passenger cars, light commercial vehicle, medium & heavy commercial vehicles, two-wheelers & off-the-road vehicles), which is regularly updatedthrough various primary research surveys and secondary sources such as automotive associations &government publications.
Tyre Demand
OEM Tyre Sales
OEM tyre demand has been calculated by multiplying the average number of tyres per vehicle to the totalnumber of vehicle produced. For example, for two-wheeler segment, the average number of tyres areconsidered to be two and for passenger cars, the average number of tyres is five. Further, the averagenumber of tyres for light commercial vehicles (LCVs), medium & heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCVs)and off-the road (OTR) vehicles have been considered as 5, 7 and 4, respectively.

Replacement Tyre Sales
Replacement tyre demand of a particular country is directly dependent on country’s vehicle fleet size andhistorical vehicle sales. The replacement demand is therefore extracted by multiplying the vehicle fleet withthe replacement tyre ratio, which is obtained by conducting a series of surveys with car owners tounderstand the frequency of tyre replacement as it varies for different countries depending upon factorssuch as road conditions, climate, economic and regulatory policies applicable in a country. The replacementratio is expressed as a percentage. For example, in case of passenger cars, replacement ratio is consideredto be 100% if four tyre is replaced per vehicle per year.
Example for passenger car replacement tyre demand calculation:
The calculated replacement tyre demand data is further analyzed by TechSci Research through Delphitechnique i.e. multiple rounds of telephonic interviews were conducted with tyre companiesdealers/distributors in France. The information thus gathered through primary interviews was cross-verifiedthrough industry experts and secondary sources such as annual reports and paid databases to generatemeaningful results.
