Last Tuesday, Mr. Frankelbrought us a super treatsugar cookies. There was acatch though. He said wecouldnt eat them until we

had frosted and decoratedthe fractional parts!First we drew a fractionplan showing whatfractions we would divideour cookie into. Then wegathered frosting andsprinkles.

Some kids frostedfourths of their cookies -where each fourth was a

different color. Somefrosted one-half onecolor, one-third onecolor, and one-sixthanother color. Our cookies were almosttoo beautiful to eat.

This activity was reallyfun and easy. It reallyhelped us to see, and

understand fractionalparts. It was a greatintroductory activity tohelp us explore the worldof fractions. You caneven try this one athome next time youbake cookies. What adelicious way to focus onfractions!

This week Mr. Frankel taught usa game called Cover Up.

In order to play, we first neededto make a fraction kit. Thefraction kit looked like the one

    to the right.

Each strip was a different color.

Once everyone had their ownfraction kit, we made fractiondice showing all the fractions inour kits. To play the game, youroll the dice

Pizza PartyBy Justin, Brittany, & Kelsey

As part of our fraction unit, our class learned to playPizza Party.

Pizza Party comes in a realpizza box. You spin a pizzaand try to be the first

person to get a completepizza. Sometimes you haveto trade pieces. If you needone-sixth to complete yourpizza and you spin a third, you can trade your third fortwo sixths. Then you win thegame!

This was a fun game and, like Cover Up, it helped us

and try to be the first to coverup your whole strip.

After we played Cover Up, weplayed Un Cover.

You start with two halves anduncover what you roll. But ifyou roll one-eighth, you have totrade one-half for four-eighthsfirst.

We thought this game wasreally fun and creative.

    We especially liked how you

could play the game two ways,

    Cover Up (continued)

    to understand equivalentfractions.

We highly recommend thisgame because we think it is agreat way to practicefractions without feeling as if

you are studying or doingmath, even though you are.

This game also helps you tosee how fractions apply toevery- day life, especially withfood!

But, we must warn you thatplaying this game may makeyou hungry for a bigpepperoni pizza!

by covering or uncoveringfractions depending on the

roll of the dice.Although this game doesntteach you how to add, subtract, multiply, or dividefractions, it does force youto convert fractions andwork with equivalentfractions, which issomething we all needpractice at!

    This game taught me

    equivalent fractions,said Barbara.

This game is the bomb, said Justin.

The pizza slices really helped me to understand fractions.
