Definition of Fraction A mathematical expression representing the division of one whole number by another. Usually written as two numbers separated by a horizon tal ordiagonal line , fractions are also used to indicate a part o f a whole number or a ratio between two numbers. Fractions may have a value of less t han one,as with 1/2, or equal to one, as with 2/2, or more than o ne, as with 3/2. Parts of a Fraction The top number of a fraction is the numerator and the bottom number i s the denominator . Types of Fractions Fractions can be classified as proper or improper. In proper fractions , the numerator is smaller than the denominator. In an improper fraction , the numerator is larger than the denominator. It is generally considered proper to change improper fractions to mixed numbers. Example of proper fractions: ½, ¾, 4/5, 6/7 Example of improper fractions: 4/3 , 6/5, 9/8

Definition of Fraction

A mathematical expression representing the division of one whole number by another. Usually written as two numbers separated by a horizontal ordiagonal line, fractions are also used to indicate a part of a whole number or a ratio between two numbers. Fractions may have a value of less than one,as with 1/2, or equal to one, as with 2/2, or more than one, as with 3/2.

Parts of a Fraction

The top number of a fraction is the numerator and the bottom number is

 the denominator.

Types of Fractions

Fractions can be classified as proper or improper. In proper fractions, the numerator is smaller than the denominator. In an improper fraction, the numerator is larger than the denominator. It is generally considered proper to change improper fractions to mixed numbers.

Example of proper fractions: ½, ¾, 4/5, 6/7

Example of improper fractions: 4/3 , 6/5, 9/8

A mixed fraction is a whole number and a fraction combined into one "mixed" number. Example: 1½ (one and a half) is a mixed fraction. (Also called a Mixed Number)

Write/Re-write Fraction

3 4___ , __ 4 5

First need to find a common denominator ( multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 25 ……………….)

(multiples of 5 are 10, 15,20,25 30,35…………………)

20 is common multiple of 4 & 5

From the multiples above 4 x5 =20 so 3 x5= 15 ___ (denominator is multiplied by 5 then numerator 20 must also be multiplied by 5)

So 3/4 and 15/20 are similar fractions. 4 x 4 = 16 and 4/5 is similar to 16/20. ___ 5 x 4 = 20

Reduce Fractions to lowest terms

20/25 Find common multiple of both numerator and denominator. In this case its 5. So 5 is divided into 20 which is 4 and 5 into 25 is 5 so 20/25 in its lowest terms is 4/5

Arranging fractions in ascending and descending order

Ascending Order

¾ , ½ , 1/5, 3/10, . First find the least common denominator. 20 is the LCD.

15 10 4 6----- ----- ----- -----20 20 20 20

So in ascending order it would be 1/5, 3/10 , ½, 3/4

Descending Order

Descending order would be ¾, ½, 3/10, 1/5.
