There is Always a Place for You at St. John’s

Sunday, June 11, 2017 • Holy Trinity

The Trinity is often written off as an incomprehensible mystery, so we don’t really think much about it. Yet the Trinity has been present in creation from the beginning, and we are living our whole lives within the action of the Trinity who creates, guides and energizes the whole universe.

Through our baptism into the Trinity we share God’s very life, we are drawn into the communion of life and love shared by Father, Son and Spirit. No-tice how often we invoke the Trinity during the Mass. We begin and end with the Sign of the Cross, we pray to the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit, the Eucharistic Prayer is addressed to the Father, recalls the mission of Christ, and in-vokes the Holy Spirit and ends with a Trinitarian doxology before the Great Amen.

We may not be able to understand the mystery of the Trinity, but there’s no doubt that God has shared the love inherent in it. Let us celebrate that today and every day.

Understanding the Mass

The goal of these articles is to help us understand that the priest doesn’t just “say” Mass while we watch. All of us are integral parts of each celebration.

How has history affected the participation of the laity in the celebration of Mass? During the monarchical and ju-ridical models of the 15th and 16th centuries, the Mass came to be seen as something to be attended, something to be watched. That seems strange today, but that’s where we were!

Over the years, however, understanding of the original and basic nature of the Mass grew, and when Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council in 1963, attention to liturgy was high on the agenda. The first document to come out of the Council (Sacrosanctum Concilium) explained the basic elements of the Sunday Eucha-rist (the Mass) and its place as the summit and font of the Christian life.

The Mass has four parts: Introductory Rites, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist, and Concluding Rites. It is centered on the book and the table. The book, called the Lectionary, contains words from our scriptures, our Bible. They are set according to the Sundays of the year, in a three year cycle. All present gather around the table holding the bread and wine, give thanks and praise to God, and then share in Holy Communion, the Body and Blood of Christ.

Ministries United Silver Spring

Takoma Park (MUSST) MUSST was created in 1996 through a joint effort of Community Ministries Montgomery County and several local congregations. MUSST provides a central location for emergency financial assistance as well as grants to low-income

and homeless persons in lower Silver Spring and Takoma Park (defined as zip codes 20901, 20910, 20912, and a small part of 20783 in Montgomery County) once per year. MUSST also assists with the purchase of medical prescriptions, eviction/foreclosure prevention, and/or utility discontinuance prevention. MUSST became incorporated in late 1998 and secured it’s non-profit corporation status in early 1999. Located in the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services building at 8818 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD, MUSST is ideally located in the service area for low-income families who seek assistance from the county. MUSST employs one staff person, the Executive Director and relies heavily upon volunteers, especially from their local congregations. Volunteers help clients to receive assistance from other area agencies. Once a client is screened to ensure they meet the eligibility requirements, volunteers may refer the client to other programs for food, clothing, furniture, dental, or eye care. MUSST’s goal is to provide emergency financial assistance for eligible clients, and to prevent catastrophic events which could de-stabilize an individual or a family. MUSST strives to empower people to take an active role in solving their financial crisis. MUSST also works with clients to put them back on solid financial footing. For example, volunteers refer clients to take money management courses and to take advantage of other community resources which teach them how to stretch their income.

MUSST volunteers also provide the required applications and guidelines to apply for county and state programs including the Maryland Energy Assistance (MEAP), Electric Universal Service (EUSP), Rental Assistance (RAP) and MEDBANK. St. John the Baptist has supported MUSST for over 15 years. The Community Fund gives MUSST a monthly grant of $400; in addition, proceeds from the fund provides clients with assistance as their need arises. Volunteers have worked at MUSST as receptionists, board members, and in other capacities over the years. Currently MUSST needs a volunteer treasurer and a volunteer secretary. Treasurer

Mystical Word

L.J. Milone, Director of Adult Faith Formation

Jesus sees the de facto evil use of power rooted in the will to power—specifically in the power that tries to manipulate God. Insofar as human beings do not let God be God, they themselves cease to be human. And when these non humans hold power, they use it against the kingdom. ”God among us. God became a human be-ing. God is alive in the ordinary stuff of daily life. God became flesh in Jesus, a man who lived in the first century in a town called Nazareth. It is specific. God dwells in the details. This is what we mean by the word,

“Incarnation.” It is a word whose root meaning is “in the flesh.” God is in the flesh of Jesus. Incarnation, though, doesn’t happen just once. Meister Eckhart preaches, "People think that God became human only in the Incarnation, but this is not the case, for God has become human just as surely here and now as he did then, and has

become human in order that he might give birth to you as his only begotten Son." God wants to take on our flesh. God within us. We don't need anything to be happy, for God is within us. This is the divine communion and transformation. From within God transforms us into the divine reality itself. The divine presence within each creature enables it to change and evolve. The same Spirit brings and keeps each one in the unity of the Holy Mystery. Spirit is the Breath of God. Just like the breath sustaining our physical lives, the Breath of God is dynamic. It is within us yet connecting us to everyone and everything. The Breath of God enables us to commune with God and through God with all creation.

The Gospel reading for today proclaims the

saving love of God that does not condemn. Instead, God sends the Son to give us eternal life, which is the very life of God. The Holy Mystery is not motivated by judgment or condemnation but by love. God wants us to have eternal life, that is, to share in the very mystery and love of the Trinity. All we have to do is believe, but the Gospel of John understands belief in a very unique way. To believe does not mean to agree with a statement but to commit one’s life. Believing is a relationship. The Trinity is not a fantastical formula (3 =1) to which we mentally acquiesce. Rather, it is God inviting us into a relationship of unity and eternal happiness.

Imagine a shamrock leaf. Think of the three

states of water: liquid, gas, and ice. Preachers and theologians grasp for any image to help us understand and relate to God as Trinity. A common explanation is the Trinity is three persons in one God. One might scratch one’s head and ask how three equals one. To most of us the Trinity not only makes no sense but mys-tifies. Still, as Richard Rohr says, not getting the Trinity has serious consequences. "Could it help explain the simple ineffectiveness and lack of transformation we witness in so much of the Christian world? When you are off at the center, the whole edifice is quite shaky and unsure of itself." In this spirit, I want to offer another perspective on the Trinity. The doctrine of the Trinity describes how God relates to us. God the Father is God beyond us. The Son is God among us. The Holy Spirit is God within us. This is what our relationship with God looks like. Father, Son, Spirit are the shape of life in God. Though one, each is distinct.

God beyond us. As a wise theologian says, “Deus mysterium est.” This is Latin for “God is Mystery.” God transcend our human minds. St. Augustine famously said, “Si comprehendis, non est deus” If you comprehend it, it is not God. Whatever we thought we understood is not the Holy Mystery who defies comprehension. Even more, God is utterly transcendent to this world and even to existence itself. This is what makes God, God. The Infinite Mystery beyond all existence is not one of the manifold things existing. God is essentially strange to us, totally foreign to our mode of being. God is not like us. Still, we can use images to relate to God as long as we know they are but images. For instance, Father does not mean "man." It means God is our Source, thus we could equally call the first person of the Trinity, "Mother." This may help those who cannot relate to God as Father, but are at home with the image of God as Mother.

Humbly remembering God is transcendent mystery remains a cornerstone of our faith, because when we think we know God we get into trouble. When we think we can speak for God, and not because God asked us to (!), we can wind up manipulating God to suit our purposes. As the liberation theologian Jon Sobrino says, “At the root of all injustice is a theological problem: whom do we worship?
