You know the one. You’ll trudge outside early in the morning, maybe to let the dog out or ready the car to drop your children off at school, and something will be different. It will dawn on you that the warmth and humidity of all those summer days have finally taken leave; you’ll detect a little crispness in the grass where you walk, evidence of a crunchy frost. You’ll look up at that deep blue early autumn sky; you’ll shiver a bit as a drafty wind cruises through your backyard. Robert Frost painted a vivid picture of this coming change in one of his most beauti- ful—and for us, most timely—poems, “October”: “O hushed October morning mild, Thy leaves have ripened to the fall; Tomorrow’s wind, if it be wild, Should waste them all. at Saint Philip doesn’t make sense without it. Worship gives everything context and reason, from Sunday School and Choir to Parish Council and our many social events. Second, commit to learning and enrichment for our children—and all of us. Within the following pages, you’ll see a great deal for our youth, as well as a new program for our parents, “Home Base,” which will help empower our parents as true leaders of their children’s education in the Orthodox Faith. This year will also feature more of our Orthodox Life, Women’s Prayer Group and special seasonal events, giving us lots to choose from. Third and finally, let’s do something daring and allow ourselves to let Christ change our lives. Personal holiness is possible—and ex-pected! We are called not only to be Orthodox Christians for a half hour or hour on a Sunday but each and every day. The way we think, speak, make decisions, act, carry ourselves … all of it can and should be guided by our relationship with Christ. Change is hard but, again, it can be good. And anything worth doing usu-ally has its challenges. There’s a change in the air, and it’s nothing to be scared of—but something to get excited about. You can do this!

Fr. Alex

Is celebrated each year on Sept 14.

Is the feastday of our beloved semi-

nary in Brookline.

Reveals the extent of Christ ’s suffer-

ing for our sake and the depth of His love.

Reminds us that we are called to

“take up” our own crosses and to follow Him.

Challenges us to view the Cross not

as jewelry or just another symbol—but a way of life and central to our identity.

New Resource for Learning & Growth

We are grateful to Cos Marandos for creating “The Glorious Icons & Arti-facts,” a booklet highlighting the major features of our Church building. It will be used as part of a special homily series this fall. Thanks Cos!

“Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices; together they shout for joy.”

—Isaiah 52:8

Our parishioners (adults and children) are always invited to read the Epistle during Sunday Liturgy. Like the holy people of scripture, we too can “lift up” our voices in praise of God. This is a profound way to participate. Contact Fr. Alex to arrange an October date.

Sunday School Blessing Sep. 11, 1st Day of Classes

Just before Holy Communion on this special Sunday, Fr. Alex will lead us in a blessing service for our Sunday School children and their families, as well as our teachers, as they embark on the 1st day of their 2016 - 17 school year. We hope and pray our students enjoy a life-changing year of learning, friendship, fun and spiritual growth at Saint Philip!

Come and See 3

If the summer found you traveling and away from your Saint Philip home, welcome back! We hope that you all had a wonderful summer.

September is a great month to re-new our Church friendships and par-ticipate in all the offerings Saint Phil-ip has to give us. While our trays and Stewardship offerings were a little light during the summer, we trust that you might look to remember our Church in a special way over the coming weeks. And for those who have not completed your 2016 Stewardship offering, please consider doing so now as opposed to waiting until the end of the year. Also, don’t forget that important Commitment Card! We are on track to surpass the number of committed stewards over 2015, which we are very pleased to announce! It’s never too late too commit, and we thank you for your Stewardship.

We look forward to seeing you at the Ministry Fair & Stewardship Potluck on Sep. 11 (See Pg. 9). Bring the whole family!

Reminder: The Stewardship Page of our website offers you all the tools you need to engage in our ministry, from a down-loadable 2016 Commitment Card to the “Faithful—Direct” online giving option. Explore it all today: www.stphilip.org/stewardship.

Every Member Campaign Getting Very Close!

As discussed at the Aug. 14 informational meeting, we have found a revolutionary solu-tion to encapsulate the dome and towers and

ready them for painting. This technology is so good, it has been used throughout Fenway Park and many landmarks across the US and internationally. We have contracted the supplier to do an exploratory/test on a small area which will also enable a turn key proposal. We are optimistic, and it is feasible to get this work done this year. Our community will meet this month to discuss the project fully. Date TBA.

Concerning fundraising, we are at just over $41,000 which is more than half way to our goal of $75,000. We do need to put a full court press on raising the remainder of this money. This is the time for us all to act and bring this project to fulfillment.

Come and See 5

For a Child’s First Day of School

Dear God, here is (name), ready for her first day at school. She has been counting the days. She is so thrilled. Be with her today when she goes into un-familiar rooms, when she sees new faces (make them kind faces!), when she stands in the lunch line, when she is on the playground. Keep her close to You as she learns and grows and makes friends. Protect her from harm. Watch over her on the way to and from school. And as she becomes part of a larger world, help me to let her go and her to gain experience that she will need to become a responsible part of Your creation. Amen.

Saint Euphrosyne (408 – 450) was a person of great faith, even from her early childhood. Her Father, Paphnutius, was wealthy and offered her a luxurious, comfortable life. But this did not sit well with Euphrosyne; she felt as if she were being called to a more hum-ble life. So she made a promise to God to live quietly in prayer and be married only to His Church. But Paphnutius wanted what he thought was “best” for his daughter, so he began pressuring her to marry a wealthy young man. To avoid breaking her sacred

vow, she had to act. So she renamed herself “Smaragdus,” dis-guised herself as a man, and entered a monastery. In later years, her father, who was bereaved at losing his precious daughter, came to the monastery in search of advice and comfort. Though he didn’t recognize her, he received consul from his very own daugh-ter, who had been living as a monk all this time. Shortly before her passing, she revealed the long-kept secret to her father, assuring him that she had indeed lived the “best” life possible, one lived close to God.

Getting Practical: So often in life, we know that God is guiding us in a certain direction. Oftentimes, this direction is not the easiest one, and it is very easy to instead follow “paths” that are not good for us. The life of St. Euphrosyne inspires us to follow our holy instincts. Share this story with your children, grandchildren and Godchildren: teach them that children, too, are capable of great spiritual wisdom!

Many of our teenagers and young adults are curious about the occult, what we might call the “dark” side of the spiritual realm. For Orthodox Christians, the spir-

itual realm is very real, as are its dangers for our youth when the temptation to experiment with Oija Boards, palm reading, and other practices arises. To help dispel certain misconceptions they may have about spirituality, and to give them a vehicle to dialogue with these issues and ask questions, we will once again take a field trip to Salem, MA, guided by Fr. Alex and our GOYA leaders. Please join us on the 9th!

More details to follow. Contact Ad-visor Marisa Donati to confirm: [email protected]

Family Night Floor Hockey Sep. 23, 6 - 8 pm

The pizza will be provided, but please bring a drink or dessert. Contact Brandy Chetsas to confirm your offering: [email protected].

Day of Caring, Sep. 14

Have you ever heard of a Comfort Dog? These loving friends are trained to provide affection and comfort to people in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, hospices, schools, disaster areas and more. Recently, the Liakos Family brought a beautiful little dog into their home, as a family pet, and have trained her as a Com-

fort Dog. Stephanie and TC offered us a brief bio: Clio is an 18 month old Cavachon (part Bichon Frise and part King Charles Cavalier Cock-er Spaniel). She is tan and white, roughly 15 pounds and was trained by Wagging

Tail Academy. She is warm, very loving and definite-ly a “people pet.” Clio is always ready to assist as well as receive a nice petting!

The Liakos Family has offered the time and talents of Clio to our parish. If you have a family member or friend you think would benefit from a visit with Clio,

please contact Fr. Alex.

“Get Involved”: www.stphilipnh.org/about/get_involved.php (complete) Focusing on “Serving the Church” and “Serving the World,” these resources will help pa-

rishioners of all ages identify concrete ways they can serve Saint Philip, the greater community and more.

“Family Resources”: www.stphilipnh.org/ministries/family_resources.php (to be completed this month) Making our homes “little churches” and connecting our youth to ministry opportunities at Saint Philip, the Metropolis and beyond are huge priorities for our parents. We’re sure these offerings will make a difference for your family.

Ministry Fair & Potluck, Sep. 11 Celebrating Our Faith Community

Women’s Prayer Group & Bible Study

We have a true treasure in the Saint Methodios Faith & Heritage Center. Not only is it the setting for

our Metropolis’ camping program, but it is a resource for all of our ministries and parishioners to utilize. Come get acquainted—or reacquainted—with the center on the 17th! A BBQ, music, youth activities, tours and more are on the agenda. See the inserted flyer for more details.

Confirm your attendance with Fr. Alex by Sep. 10.

Retreat Center Open House Saturday, Sept. 17

Our good friend Jim Skedros, of Holy Cross Seminary and Harvard University, will help us kick off our 2016 - 17 Orthodox Life program on back-to-back Thursdays: Sep. 29 and Oct. 6, 7 - 8:15 pm. Our theme for the year will be “Affirming Our Faith: the Encyclical of the Great & Holy Council.” Jim will lead us in a basic overview of the letter, entitled, “A Gift of Inspiration.”

This will be a great start to the year. All are welcome to join us for learning and friendship.

Orthodox Life Resumes Sep. 29 Welcoming Dr. Jim Skedros
