SSHRC - Partnership Development Grants Deadline: November 30, 2012 Partnership Development Grants provide support, up to $200,000 over one to three years, to new or existing partnerships to:

develop research and related activities in the social sciences and humanities, including knowledge mobilization and the meaningful involvement of students and new scholars, by fostering new partnerships for research and related activities involving existing and/or potential partners; or

design and test new partnership approaches for research and/or related activities that may result in best practices or models that either can be adapted by others or have the potential to be scaled up to a regional, national or international level.

The federal budget, as noted in the 2012 Economic Action Plan, announced an increase of $7 million per year to SSHRC for industry-academic partnerships to commence in 2012-13. As a result, SSHRC encourages applicants to involve partners from the private sector, including associations, in their partnership. Private sector organizations are also invited to visit SSHRC’s Partnerships for Success section of its website. For more information, please contact us by telephone at 613-943-1007 or email at: [email protected].

SSHRC Partnership Grants – Letter of Intent Deadline: February 15, 2013 The Partnership Grants – Letter of Intent description is now updated for the 2013 competition and available on the SSHRC website HERE. Partnership Grants provide support for new and existing formal partnerships over four to seven years to advance research, research training and/or knowledge mobilization in the social sciences and humanities. Note that partnership proposals focused primarily on partnered research training initiatives may now be submitted to the Partnership Grants funding opportunity under the Talent umbrella program. Partnered research training initiatives seek to support the creation of innovative approaches that enrich research training experiences for students and postdoctoral researchers while facilitating their transition to academic or non-academic workplace settings. Applicants interested in applying must follow SSHRC’s Guidelines for Partnered Research Training Initiatives. The federal budget, as noted in the 2012 Economic Action Plan, announced an increase of $7 million per year to SSHRC for industry-academic partnerships to commence in 2012-13. As a result, SSHRC encourages applicants to involve

partners from the private sector, including industry associations, in their partnership. Private sector organizations are also invited to visit SSHRC’s Partnerships for Success section of its website. Contact: 613-943-1007 or email at: [email protected].

SSHRC Welcomes Applications Involving Research-Creation Recognizing the importance of research-creation in the social sciences and humanities, and the expertise of artist-researchers, SSHRC is integrating research-creation as an eligible activity across its Talent, Insight and Connection programs.

SSHRC defines “research-creation” as a creative process that comprises an essential part of a research activity, and fosters the development and renewal of knowledge through aesthetic, technical, instrumental or other innovations. See Definitions of Terms for more details.

Beginning with the October 2012 Insight Grants competition, applicants will be able to request support for projects involving research-creation. Eventually, research-creation activities will be eligible for support through most of SSHRC’s funding opportunities, with newly launched competitions adding “creative outputs” to their evaluation criteria as an option for evidence of expertise.

Applicants whose proposals involve research-creation will have the opportunity, in the CV portion of their applications, to provide a link to a website showcasing their creative outputs or research-creation achievements.

Change in Eligibility Criteria for Faculty The September 15, 2012 release of the Program Guide for Professors will include a change in the eligibility criteria for your faculty members who hold their primary position outside Canada. The new rule will read: If your primary position is outside of Canada, you must work full-time in an eligible Canadian institution (applies to grant applications submitted after September 15, 2012). The previous rule which stipulated that researchers who lived abroad or held a position of any kind outside of Canada had to spend a minimum of six months per year at an eligible Canadian institution, was difficult to apply both for the institution having to monitor the time spent by these researchers at the Canadian institution, and also for NSERC staff requiring this information.

Page 6: FP Bulletin -Issue 30 September

To learn more please book an appointment with Josephine Adda [email protected] or call extension 621

As of September 15, 2012, this new rule will apply and a) researchers who do not meet this requirement will be ineligible, and b) grantees who do not meet this requirement will be given one additional instalment from their current grant before it is terminated. Your institution is asked to inform NSERC of current grantees who are affected by this new rule as soon as possible, as indicated in Schedule 10 – Confirmation of Eligibility of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Roles and Responsibilities in the Management of Federal Grants and Awards.

For more information, you may contact NSERC Secretariat at [email protected].

REVISIONS – Program Guide for Professors The Program Guide for Professors has been revised recently for the programs with fall application deadlines. You can get an overview of these new programs and revisions to the program literature by consulting the Summary of Changes – 2012-2013 Program Guide for Professors which is posted on our Web site and is updated as programs are added or revised. Note that a revised version of the Tri-Agency Financial Administration Guide will be posted in the coming months.

Changes to Research Tools and Instruments Grants Program (Note: October 2012 is the final competition) Eligibility of Expenditures NSERC has made changes to its Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) Grants Program to reflect updated requirements for eligible costs. Applications to the RTI Grants Program cannot include equipment that was purchased before the application deadline. Limit on the Number of Applications In light of reductions in available program funding for the RTI Grants Program, individuals can only be included in one application, either as an applicant or as a co-applicant for the 2013 competition. Contact: [email protected] or 613-996-8020

Connect with NSERC: Consultations on the Future of the RTI Grants Program Throughout the summer, NSERC has been consulting the research community on future options for the Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) Grants Program. Through a series of meetings and an ongoing online consultation, NSERC representatives have been gathering comments, questions and feedback on two proposed options for the RTI Grants Program, given its reduced funding envelope. The on-line consultation is live until September 28, 2012. Please visit the Connect with NSERC page to share your thoughts on the future of the RTI Grants Program.

NSERC Discovery Grants Information Session Interested researchers are invited to attend a Discovery Grant information session being presented by the UNB Office of Research Services and UNB members of various Grants Selection Committees (GSCs). Grants are up to $60,000 per year for up to 2 years, 50% of which may be used as a teaching release.

New NBHRF Eligibility Requirements NBHRF’s board of directors has approved new eligibility requirements for several of its funding programs. Funding program descriptions on the website now reflect this change.

Ability NB - Request for Proposals New Brunswick has the second highest rate of disability in Canada at 17.2% of our population and the unemployment rate for persons with a disability remains high. An injury or the onset of a disability can leave people with feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and hostility. Experiencing these negative feelings often delays goal setting and achievement. With a strong need for innovative solutions to assist youth with a disability with their transition planning from high school to the workforce, Ability NB has piloted innovative empowerment programs. From September 2011 – June 2012, Ability NB delivered 9 empowerment seminars to 55 youth with a disability in the Fredericton and Saint John regions. Stemming from the pilot’s positive results, we are expanding the pilot to other regions of the province. The program is a multi-media based, education program created by The Pacific Institute based on applied psychological education. Our primary target audience is youth with a disability who are “stuck” in their community integration plans. The project aims to instill confidence, build self-efficacy and provide tools for personal development and ultimately enhance the employability of young New Brunswickers with a disability. It is anticipated that this pilot will result in the establishment of a long-term program in New Brunswick. Evaluation plan

Evaluation continues to be instrumental to determine the effectiveness of the program in New Brunswick and will assist in the development of the pilot as a long term program. The primary components of our evaluation plan include formal evaluation (pre and post telephone surveys which will be delivered and analyzed by the external evaluators) and a process evaluation (session feedback form, case studies that will be completed by the project coordinator). As this is a Phase 2 of the pilot project, the evaluation tools have already been developed. This proposal should not exceed $11,000. For more information on this request, do not hesitate to contact Tammy-Lee Wright at 506.858.0311 or [email protected]. Please submit proposals in writing by October 5, 2012.
