flowers, hand worked banners, stained glass windows and other memorials. God is obviously alive in this community and marching on!

The quality of life here is reflected in your excellent and well run library. In these days of most everyone wanting monetary reward for any job done it was a pleasure to find so many helpful volunteer librarians.

With this kind of population, it is no wonder your Hospital Auxiliary could raise the handsome sum of $100,000; Congratulations!

Now for the crunch and a beef! Is anyone ever willing to say everything is perfect?

After having a number of local people recommend inter-island travel, we enquired of an official for the B.C . Ferries about what is called island-hopping.

He rather brusquely informed us that this service was" not for tourists who have nothing better to do with their time (this is my interpretation and not all the words of the official) but for the benefit, of the island people. / ^ ^

(However, I cajl only suppose we were probably about the umpteenth dozen persons who had plagued him that day with the same stupid questions and besides he had more important work to do, (his own words).

However, his younger assistant came to our rescue and nicely explained the difficulty of island hopping unless we were prepared to spend quite a time waiting for connections between islands.

We do not feel our wish to see some of the other islands is unreasonable, even on a short holiday. Certainly, we would expect to pay ferry charges as tourists, while the local island people travel free. That is fair enough. Next time we come, we shall know to leave sufficient time for travel between the islands. Perhaps B . C . Ferry could be persuaded to explain more fully about island-hopping on their brochures and so save the local officials many headaches and the tourists much frustration.

It might be wise to discourage inter-island travel for tourists, other than Route 5 from Victoria, rather than half-heartedly promoting it. It could be explained that it is a service mainly for island residents.

A l l in all it has been a delightful holiday and we wish to thank the people of Salt Spring Island, perhaps especially our hosts at St. Mary Lake Resort.

KAY MACLEAN, Peachland, B . C . June 28,1979.

The stick is mounted with a mountain goat's hoof, and its handle consists of a goat's horn which can be moved into a vertical position in order to secure firmer rock or grass holds.

Canon Richard Dawson, who preached at Galiano and Mayne twice last month, was for many years a travelling missionary in Northern Manitoba? During those days fresh water or milk was a seldom-obtained luxui so that now he drinks no tea or coffee, but prefers water or milk for pure pleasure.

Boats going through Active Pass were serenaded from the rocks at Bellhouse Park by Piper David Hamilton of Victoria? David, who has piped in cruise ships docking at Ogden Point and the Inner Harbour for the last two summers, later played at Page Drive to an audience ranging from pre-school children to senior citizens. Dressed in full ceremonial uniform of kilt and sporran, he told us that bagpipes have three drones, each separately tuned, and a chanter which plays nine notes and is tuned by altering the position of the reed. A l l this tuning, which takes at least

20 minutes, must be done before each recital. The bag of his bagpipes was made of cowhide covered by green velvet fringed with gold and especially imported from Scotland. Down the side of his stocking David wore a silver dagger with an unprintable gaelic name, used to repel invaders of his person.

When a Galiano-ite enquired for Nan New in the Gorge Road Rehabilitation Hospital, she was asked "Is she Chinese?" Nan New later introduced her visitor to the chief therapist whose Christian name is Nanw (pronounced Nan-

. noo). By this time the visitors' head was reeling, especially as her grandson's pet name as a baby was Nanou, which name he now gives to his cat. Nan-Noo! No it is not not Mork's greeting word on television's top rated Mork and Mindy Show! Nan-Noo, at least three of them are on Galiano right now. FUTURE EVENTS

finding their trip most interesting. They were completely enthralled

with this fast continent. They stopped off for a week in Chiliwack, then over to Galiano. Mr . Ripley, who is an excellent fisherman himself, took his uncle fishing, for the first time in Mr . Murphy's life, and to their delight, they caught a salmon, too! Then they took a trip to Victoria, which they also enjoyed.

Then off to Ganges, for a visit to Lady Minto Hospital, and "Greeff woods". They were particularly interested, as Mrs. Murphy is a nurse by profession, and she also works closely with the elderly as a volunteer with "Mealson Wheels" in her home town. Mr . Murphy is concerned with the management of the Mersey Tunnel in Liverpool, and when he retires in December of this year, he will have completed 50 years' service, less only his six years of war service with, the British Army. They take back home with them many fond memories of our great land of Canada, from sea to sea, ancT the happiness of visiting with their families.

Next week another friend will buy his "One-way-ticket" to Galiano, Denny Oldroyd will be coming to the Island to live, on the Bluff Road property he has owned for several years. On June 27, he was treated to a surprise party by his friends with whom he has worked at the Vancouver Sun for the past years. He is an artist of some note, and we give him a big "Galiano welcome" home.

Miss. Jean Lockwood has returned from a holiday at Jasper, accompanied by her sister and brother-in-law, Mr . and Mrs. B . McKenna, from Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Another welcome, "Ga l i ano style" to the McKenna's, who will be living here now. Just in case anyone is wondering who Mary and Kathy are, we are Kathy Benger, with help from her husband also, and Mary Harding, we are now co-relating the news for Galiano, and they have both been a great help to Mary when she has been i l l . Many thanks!

Year of the Child

Joan Raeside has written an enchanting musical called "Once Upon a Tale".

It concerns the adventures of a hapless, tailless guinea pig, and all the characters are animals, rather than humans. (Rather superior animals, at that!)

Casting has begun, but there are still openings for baby rabbits and others. It is hoped to give three matinee performances in the open air on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 24,25 and 26.

Anyone who is interested in taking part or in helping in any way, is invited to attend a reading/ casting meeting at 2 pm on Saturday, July 7 at Central Hall . Phone Joan Raeside or Mary Williamson for details.

FIVE YEARS AGO Gulf Islands went Tory on Mon

day as the Nariaimo-Cowichan-Islands riding returned New Democrat Tommy Douglas to his Ottawa seat. Voters chalked up a 70% turn-out in the islands to offer a 1,314:1,076 margin for Don Taylor. Douglas was one of the only two New Democrats to hold their seats in British Columbia. North Galiano and Mayne, with two polls on -North Salt Spring and two at the south end of Salt Spring Island gave a majority to Douglas.

Iona Camponello, who took the Skeena seat from veteran New Democrat Frank Howard, is the granddaughter of Mrs. E . Murchi-son, 94-year-old resident of Galiano Island.

New officer in charge o f the Ganges Detachment, RCMP, got off to a wet start this week. Cpl . Ray Stelter was seated in his office on Ganges Hi l l watching the steady drip of water through the ceiling.

Sunday was a memorable occasion for about 30 members of the Dixon and Robinson families at Galiano. They came to the home of Miss Edna Dixon for a reunion. The family dogs also attended and stole some of the salmon while it was being smoked in preparation for the party. Biggest project of its kind in British Columbia is Gavin Reynolds' stream-clearing project on Salt Spring Island. Reynolds is operating under a local initiatives grant. He was denied the support of the Chamber of Commerce on the island and has undertaken the project himself. He will direct a crew removing fallen trees and debris from island streams.

The Beautiful People are launched. Rehearsals for the Saroyan play have started for the Salt Spring Island Summer Theatre. Hollywood's Stuart Margolin is the producer and director. He founded the Summer Theatre on the island last year. Taking part in the play are John Anderson, George Furth and Elaine Heilveil, all familiar to television viewers, and Marilyn Taylor, of Salt Spring Island..

Pinkerton's guards appeared on Salt Spring Island this week as B C Telephone Company took security measures against sabotage. Private detectives drive telephone trucks around the island while striking telephone workers enjoy the fishing.

Bishop John Anderson, of British Columbia, will preach in the church of The Good Shepherd at South Pender on Sunday morning and in the North Pender church of St. Peter's on Sunday evening. During the afternoon he will leave the Penders and hold a service in St. Christopher's at Saturna.

First women ever to read the lesson in a Catholic Church on Salt Spring Island was Mrs . E . E . Groff who is leaving the island to make her home in Victoria. She read the epistle on Sunday morning at the invitation of Rev. Frank Sutherland.

Dave and Jane Hardie came to Mayne Island to set out on a canoe trip through the islands.. Vancouver couple were never so aware of high-speed powerful cruisers as they were in island waters.. They were rocking most of the time. They have paddled the length of Mayne, around Saturna, through the Penders and on to Salt Spring. At Pender they stopped to chat with Jerry Vie and at Saturna they had supper with a chance-met logger. They are alive and well despite the principle that anything in the sea is edible after 30 minutes in boiling water.

Controversial Social Credit film, The Good Life, will be shown at Saturna on Friday night. Last week, at Fulford, the film aroused the ire of a number of opposition supporters when about 150 sat down to the show. At Mayne it drew a crowd of about 125. Film illustrates the progress of the province under the Social Credit banner. John Tisdalle, M L A , is taking it around.

Although breakdowns in phone service at two points on Vancouver Island last week were attributed to sabotage, the Saturna incident was not.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO Mrs. Ethel Wilson, who has

Parking pattern changes

Softball team sits down to dinner

Parking pattern in Ganges has been changed.

There is no parking allowed immediately in front of the Kanaka Place and the area in front of the Trading Company is now clearly marked for angle parking. It was all part of a road painting program on the island last week.

The boat-launching ramp in Centennial Park has been marked out to avoid parking in the path of boats.

Further change in Salt Spring Island traffic patterns is on Park Drive, where it joins Swanson Road. There is a stop sign on Park Drive to safeguard through traffic.

Forest Rangers outline provisions of new act

. There was a party in Fulford Inn last week. The Fulford Ladies Softball team was invited oat. .Here are the young ladies showing off their trophies before settling down to a meal fit for a Softball player. Host was Bob Akerman on Thursday night. Coach Paddy Akerman was too shy to pose with his charges.

Two forest range'rs came to Salt Spring Island last week to explain the new Forest Act to a number of people on the island.

Forest Ranger Bruce Holloway and Assistant Forest Ranger Ken Epp explained the new act and the government policy relating to the responsibility for fire suppression, said Holloway. This is not to be the case. In the case of small private holdings the ministry would not levy any charge according to current policy, he explained.

The rangers came to clear up a lot of concerns for islanders. They even explained who they were.

A forest ranger is responsible for the administration of the forests in his district, said Holloway. In each district is the ranger and his assistant. They do not patrol the forests. They do not sit in little, elevated greenhouses drinking tea.

Forest fires are part of then-responsibility but not all of it. They are concerned with logging and with forest conservation as well as requiring the public at all

levels to adhere to forestry regulations. HE IS IN CHARGE

The ranger is the man in charge of the forest district. He is an administrator.

The ranger in charge of the Langford district also explained that the common term of "partial closure" is inaccurate. A closure is a prohibition of movement in the forest and may only be invoked by the minister.

Restrictions are the normal controls on forests and such a restriction as was applied last week is not a partial closure.

When access is restricted the logging operations must conform to the limited access permitted. Logging, sawmilling and mining operations are all controlled. The restriction does not apply to the operator of a tractor equipped to excavate foundations or to dig trenches. A contractor may install a drainage field as long as there is no local ordinance prohibiting him from doing so. A property owrrer

can cut up wood in his yard; again, as long as the local fire district does not rule otherwise.

The forest ranger is still the man responsible for suppression of forest fires and Holloway assured Driftwood that flying tankers are still available for use on the islands should the need arise. RECORD GOOD

As far as fires are concerned the track record in this district is good, he added. Majority of forest fires in the district have been held to a quarter-acre or so.

The responsibility of the ranger station will eventually be limited to Crown land, Driftwood learned. The province will be there as necessary, but the province will only be financially responsible for fires on Crown land under the Act.

The difference between districts is the proportion of Crown land. In British Columbia about 95% of the country belongs to the Crown. In the Langford district about 5% is Crown land.

It wasn't easy to establish an average cost for fire-fighting. Water bombing represents a cost of about $4,000 a load, Driftwood learned.

New act has not been implemented yet and the private property owner is not to be charged the cost of fire-fighting. B A N K R U P T C Y

Forest Ranger Holloway explained that his responsibility is purely administrative when he was asked whether a fire could bankrupt a small property owner.

If a fire breaks out on a small holding at such a time as the government may enforce the new act 10 loads of water could represent a levy of $40,000.

It is the aspect of the new Forest Act that has brought pained protests from all over the province and "particularly", said the minister, "from the Gulf Islands". >
