When we last heard her, she was previewing some of the pieces she would use to audition at New England. She was one of 5 chosen out of 33 applicants to study with their premier violin professor. Her year and a half has been a whirlwind of classes, lessons, performances with various groups and ensembles (including one at Carnegie Hall). Her first recital here was at age 15, so we feel that we have helped launch the career of an amazing talent! She will be accompanied by her mother, Cecilia Dunoyer, herself an accomplished concert pianist. They are currently in Argentina concertizing and they will be in State College for only 3 days in January before Juliette heads back to school. They were so gracious in agreeing to a recital on one of those days! Juliette may also speak a little bit about life in a conservatory. A Singing Group from the University Baptist & Brethren Church will be here singing Christmas carols in the Dining Room and in the halls of Darlington during the dinner hour on Friday the 22 nd . Come and enjoy.

AND THE WHEELS ON THE BUS GO ROUND

AND ROUND . . . . BUT NOT UNTIL JANUARY! MEANWHILE PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE PUT THIS NUMBER IN YOUR CELL PHONE SO THAT YOU MAY CALL THE BUS DRIVER IN THE EVENT OF ANY IRREGULARITIES SUCH AS AN EARLY OR LATE DISMISSAL: 814-251-2616. YOU MAY BE GLAD YOU DID.

A Blue Christmas worship service will be held

tonight, December 21, as it is the longest night of the year. The service expresses hope while it acknowledges present heartache. All are welcome to attend this ecumenical service at St. Paul’s Methodist Church at 7 p.m. this evening. The Science Gang offers the following programs for the New Year. In January meeting days will change to 2nd and 4th Tuesdays. January 9 ~ Ed Buss will present on “The Mysteries of Spirits”. (The spirits are alcoholic ones.) January 23 ~ Nora Maginnis, PSU nurse practitioner, will present on Transgender issues … in the Meeting Room.

From Harvey Haack, Captain of the Tailgate Team ~ Hey, Nittany Nation! ~ There WILL BE a Foxdale tailgate December 30th at 4:00 p.m. in the Foxdale Auditorium. The #9 Penn State Nittany Lions will be hosting the #11 Washington Huskies in the Fiesta Bowl in the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The Score shows that Penn State is favored over Washington by 2.5 points. On the other hand, OddsShark's computer says the final score will be Washington's 34.8 to Penn State's 33.2. Regardless, if you want to play Carter Ackerman's game, the total final score is predicted to be 55 points. So, all I can say is, "Have fun!" The Dining Staff will serve a Fiesta at halftime (approximately 6:00 p.m.). A signup sheet is posted on the bulletin board outside the Art Room. If you want to eat this Fiesta at the tailgate, please sign up. $7.20 will be charged to your Foxdale account. So, remember, the food is good!!! The fellowship is great!!!! And, the big screen is awesome!!!!! The game will be broadcast on ESPN Channel 850. How many boxes of Thin Mints do I have to eat before I start seeing results??

From Foxdale Village Management Team ~ Due to chemical levels in the pool being slightly above normal range, management has decided to close the pool. The pool will be closed beginning Thursday, December 21st and will re-open on Tuesday, December 26th. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you and we appreciate your understanding as we work to resolve the problem. From Miscellany ~ There has been a change in our schedule due to Christmas falling on our usual meeting day, the fourth Monday of the month. The December meeting will be held next Friday the 29 at 3 p.m. in the Board Room. “Animal Friends and Acquaintances” is our theme for this issue of Miscellany. The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2018. We wish you a Merry Day on the 25th ! Centering Prayer Videos and Discussion ~ The Foxdale Centering Prayer Group will show and discuss one of six short videos, in a series called That We May Be One, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on each of the following Thursday mornings: January 4, 11, 18, 25, February 1 and 8, in the Living Room on the second floor of the Apartment Building. Anyone interested in meditation, contemplative prayer and/or Centering Prayer is welcome to attend. Each of the videos features Fr. Thomas Keating, one of the founders of the Centering Prayer movement, in conversation with friends at St. Benedict’s Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado. If you practice Centering Prayer, we encourage you to join the Foxdale Centering Prayer Group for our Tuesday sits at 11:30 a.m. For more information, contact Barbara Hale at [email protected] or 814-238-0997 or Marian Hammond at 814-360-6060 or [email protected]. From Bunny Moon and Clovis Morrisson ~ We two take care of the Steinway piano in the Auditorium. Bunny keeps it hydrated and Clovis keeps it tuned. Several times in the past year, Bunny has noticed that the hydrator was unplugged. Sudden changes in the moisture content of the air around the piano results in the piano going out of tune quickly. It costs well over $100 each time we have to have it tuned. So. if you need to unplug the piano for any reason, please plug it back in when your need is over. Thanks! Commandment # 1 for the hearing impaired ~

• Wear thy hearing aid even if thou hatest it. What need hath a bureau drawer of sound-amplification?

MOVIES AT FOXDALE Sunday, December 24, at 3 p.m. in the Darlington Living Room, Celtic Thunder: Christmas will be shown. In front of a mesmerized live audience in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., powerful Irish singing group Celtic Thunder performs heartwarming holiday favorites and original tunes, including "Winter Wonderland," "Silent Night," "Christmas Morning Donegal" and more. Comprised of vocalists Damian McGinty, Keith Harkin, Paul Byrom, Ryan Kelly and George Donaldson, Celtic Thunder shares its potent and beautiful brand of music in this inspiring performance. (2010) 60 minutes There will be no movie shown on Christmas Eve, Sunday, December 24, at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium. Tuesday, December 26, at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium, The Nutcracker will be shown. Lloyd Jackman has selected a recent version of Tchaikovsky's ballet for our holiday enjoyment. The performance is by the Staatsballett Berlin, and it is a live performance filmed in 2014 and released in 2016. The principal dancers are Iana Salenko as Clara, Marian Walters as the Nutcracker/Prince, and Michael Banzhaf as Drosselmeyer. (2016) 120 minutes Wednesday, December 27, at 7 p.m. in the Darlington Living Room, The Christmas Candle will be shown. In the village of Gladbury, it's believed that every 25 years an angel comes on Christmas Eve bearing a miracle for one of the residents. But the arrival of a new minister with fresh ideas threatens to extinguish the age-old tradition. (2013) 100 minutes From David Jeffreys ~ Around this time of the year, the best films released during the past year start to become available on Netflix DVDs. Here are some of the movies that will be shown in the Foxdale Auditorium over the coming months: Dunkirk, Victoria and Abdul (with Judi Dench as Queen Victoria), Lady Bird, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Jane (about Jane Goodall), Logan Lucky, Mudbound, Get Out, Wind River, Coco, Quest, and – going back a little farther – Maudie, and Wonder Woman. In addition, our Diversity Film Series will include Marshall (about Thurgood Marshall) and Battle of the Sexes (Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs). There's lots of good viewing in store. I wonder what people who spell “U” instead of “YOU” do with all their spare time.

The Love your Planet Film Festival kicks off its 2018 season on Wednesday, January 10th at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium with "The True Cost”, a documentary about the garment industry in developing countries, and returns to America where it looks at how media affects the desire of people--especially teenagers--to buy and create an industry focused on consumption. Using an approach that looks at environmental, social, and psychological aspects, it also examines consumerism and mass media. Mark your calendars.

Let’s Go Lions!

My goal for 2017 was to lose 10 pounds. I only have 15 more to go.

From Marie Bianco, Chair of Foxdale’s New

Year’s Eve Party ~ Here are some reasons why you should spend New Year’s Eve here at Foxdale ~ • According to statistics from the National

Insurance Crime Bureau, more vehicles are stolen on New Year’s Day than any other holiday.

• In Italy, Mexico and Bolivia people wear red underwear on New Year’s Day to bring them good luck all year long.

• It’s good luck to eat foods like black-eyed peas and ham and cabbage on New Year’s Eve because it’s thought these foods bring prosperity.

• Not everyone celebrates New Year’s on January First. The Chinese New Year 4716 will be celebrated in 2018 on February 16, the Year of the Dog. The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, takes place September 9. In Ancient Rome, you waited until March to begin the New Year.

• The three top New Year’s resolutions are to lose weight, eat more healthy foods and exercise more. As if you didn’t know.

• The top three places to celebrate New Year’s Eve are Las Vegas, Disney World and New York City.

We don’t promise black-eyed peas or red

underwear, but we hope you’ll join residents and friends in the Auditorium to usher in the New Year 2018. Festivities begin at 4 p.m. and a sign up sheet is posted outside the Art Room. We ask you to bring a snack and a beverage to share if you are able. Dessert will be on us. And wear your nametag.
