As the New Year begins and
I take over the Newsletter
from Tom I find that I have
to put my own little mark on
it… so ta da… a new look! I
have been told that the Fox
Valley Aero newsletter is
one of the best in the
hobby… well one of the best
simply will not do... it needs
to be the best! Getting it
formatted to this point turned
out to be a bigger chore than
I would have imagined... and
that is mostly because I am
not familiar with Word… I
have cussed at it several

out… I may move it to a
different software to make
my life easier… or I will
have learned word good
enough at the end of this
months editing that it will
stay put… we will see.
The cornerstones to a great
newsletter are great articles,
and that is where I need your
help. I would like to do a
“hints and tips” section and
maybe a “show us your

your tips and if you have a

Members, as most of you know the Fox Valley Aero Club swap meet is on Saturday February 27that the Kane County Fair Grounds. Doors open at 9:00 am, and venders can set up at 8:00 am. The club is going to need help setting up tables and chairs at 7:00am.Please come on out, coffee and doughnuts will be served to the people who help out. At 9:00 am we will need people to watch the front door, collect money and hand out wristbands, there will be a $5.00 entrance fee for adults and children under twelve are free. We will also need help

with parking; club members will help direct the venders to unload their stuff on the west side and south side of the building and ask them to park on the south side or north side of the building, they can also park in new parking lot on the west side. We need to keep the road around the building open for a fire lane, this is very important. In the past we have had a club table where we sell used airplanes, airplane kits used engines and various airplane parts all donated by club members. Please clean out your work shop and bring these items to
place on the club table, all proceeds go to maintain the field. We will need a couple of members to be in charge of the club table, let me know at the next club meeting or the morning of the swap if you are interested. This is a very popular event for our club so please come on out Saturday morning and help out, not only is this a lot of fun but we can make a lot of money in a short period of time. “A reminder for all to pay
your AMA Dues…”
I hope the New Year finds
everyone well. We covered
a lot of ground in the January
general meeting. While
there was much business to
talk about, we found some time to talk about a few
winter building projects too.
A lot of good ideas were
thrown around at the meeting
for events and activities.
Much of what was discussed
was well received. A new
approach towards fun flys
and the rebirth of the Friday
night events was met with
great enthusiasm!
It was great to see the
turnout – both of people and
projects for the show and
tell. Seats and the tables
were plenty full. It’s great to

As I write this on January
21, 2010 there have been 136
out of 234 members that
have paid their 2010 dues.
This means our checking
account is healthy again.
Greg Bohler is busy putting
together his budget for the
year and the Board will
discuss and approve the
details at the March or April
meeting. A reminder for all
to pay your AMA dues as
well as your insurance
expires on December 31 of
each year and needs to be
renewed before you fly.
I hope all of you are busy
performing the preventative
maintenance on your aircraft

see the excitement with
which club members spoke
of their projects. We
definitely want to see more
of this. I also saw a number
of faces that haven’t been around in a while. I think
they were looking to see
what the new regime has in
store. A few folks sought
me out personally after the
meeting to share their
support of the ideas brought
forward. Guys that haven’t
participated in some time are
looking forward to coming
back. That’s awesome, and
that‘s the idea. We’re looking to bring a fresh
approach to club activities
and events for 2010.
Momentum will build as the
months pass by and we
approach spring. If you
haven’t been to a meeting in
a while, please come out and
check out what we’re
planning for future meetings
and the upcoming season. We promise, fun will always
be part of the picture!
The next club event is
around the corner. The swap
shop is on February 27th.
Take inventory of your shop
and prepare to sell, buy, or
both. Contact Steve Baker if
you’re interested in getting a
table.

Membership Spotlight I would like to welcome new

An update on the ever
evolving membership front, it was suggested that I copy
the flying field rules that are
posted on the main sign at
the field. I did so and have

Gift Baskets
Secondly, both Jeff
Anderson and myself
delivered gift baskets to our
two close neighbors east of
the field - Tri Com and the
University of Illinois
Extension. It is important to
communicate with our close
neighbors about what the
FVAC does for the
community. Both of the
managers have enjoyed our
activities and applaud our
stewardship for helping out
the community.
We received a thank you
card form the new manager
at Tri Com and have a
welcome wine taste from the
harvested grapes at the U of I
extension.
Do forget to attend our
SWOP meet in February and
offer help with Steve Baker.

Field Chairman’s Report Greg Bohler – [email protected]
Hello and welcome to
2010. Because of the time
of year, there is not to much
to report from the field. We
have talked about 3 projects
for this spring so far.
The first and most important
in my mind is seal coating
the drive way coming into the field. We have a lot of
time and money invested in
this stretch of pavement and
it is probably the most used
thing at the field. We
definitely need to preserve
it.
The second and most highly
requested and talked about,
is a charging station for all the electrics that are now
becoming very common at
our field and in the hobby. I
will need a lot of help on
design ideas and building
this as my experience with
electrics is limited. For
those of you that have ideas
or wish to give input. There
are a couple of things that
we do not have control over and must be remembered in
the design. We only have a
60 amp service at the field
and it is currently not
feasible to upgrade that.
When we hold an event we
use quite a bit of it's
capacity. We will have to
design our station with that
in mind and possibly adopt
a set of rules for charging
when we are done so we
don't adversely affect our
electric service. I would
appreciate any ideas,
suggestions and help on this project. You can send me
emails to
The third project affects a
smaller portion of our club
but still deserves our
consideration. We have had
several requests to put a
small asphalt Heli pad at the
west end of the field. We
will get some bids and see if
this is something that we
can afford to do.
I look forward to hearing some thoughts and ideas.
Until then, stay safe in your
workshops.
Greg Bohler

come.”

The 'regular' flying season has
come and gone. Training is generally over and done by now,
but this morning I got an E-mail
from one of my trainees asking if
I was available to fly. He has every third Friday off and noted
that it was supposed to be warm
(now, I don't consider 53 warm)
Chief Flight Instructor’s Report Dan Compton – [email protected]
and I shot off a reply and said I would be there at 9 o'clock - it felt
as if the frost was still on the
pumpkin, but with my cold
weather gear on it felt 'not too bad'.
Scott and I flew on the buddy box
until 12:30 and he was doing so well with the gentle breeze from
the west (straight down the
runway) that after about twenty almost perfect landings, I asked
him if he wanted to try by
himself. Well, three takeoff and
landings, a few aerobatic
maneuvers and a dead-stick later,
it is with pleasure that I can announce that we have another
proud 'solo' pilot. Congratulations
to Scott for his achievement.

We talked at the board meeting about a charging station. Please let me know if you are interested in the design of this idea. With the huge interest in electric airplanes we should

email with your ideas to be brought to the board meeting for discussion.
Safety Chairman Karl Griesbaum:
No safety Issues.. January is the start of the season for the all season flyer badge. Let me
