4th year (Final Destination ) ‐ 1
• Year of BONUS
• The easiest from getting grades !
The problem is: • The toughest year (physiological and psychological !! )

• Classification of graduation project.• Steps of graduation project preparation.
19
Introduction to graduation project
• It is a project that
– Brings you into some field – Shows your knowledge in the field.– Shows how to deal with real problems.– Gives you some presentation skills.
20
Outline
• Second semester of 3rd year• Subjects in 4th year • Introduction to graduation project.• Intending learning outputs (ILOs) of graduation project.
• Classification of graduation project.• Steps of graduation project preparation.
21
Intending learning outputs (ILOs) of graduation project.
• Learn “ how to learn”
– Analogues to real‐life
• Academically
– A joint research topic between students and the project supervisor
Outline
• Second semester of 3rd year• Subjects in 4th year • Introduction to graduation project.• Intending learning outputs (ILOs) of graduation project.
• Classification of graduation project.• Steps of graduation project preparation.
23
Classification of graduation project
• Self‐learning (90%)
• Supervisor‐based learning
• Mix of both (best)
• Pros & cons ??
Outline
• Second semester of 3rd year• Subjects in 4th year • Introduction to graduation project.• Intending learning outputs (ILOs) of graduation project.
• Classification of graduation project.• Steps of graduation project preparation.
25
Steps of graduation project preparation
• Idea• Team
– Diversity of grades– Friendship– Load balancing and responsibility
• Leader and sub‐leaders– Leadership is not a prize !– Leader is not always the best !– Profession of leader is manage and not to rule!
Steps of graduation project preparation (cont.)
• Supervisors and their classes• Coordination (differs from year to the other)• Funds and Grants
– Nahda El Mahrousa (almost 6000L.E)– ITIEDA– NTRA– College.– TIEC– Self Grant !(in the beginning)
How to write a proposal
• Introduction• Background on the problem, opportunity or situation• Benefits and feasibility of the proposed project• Description of the proposed work (results of the project)• Method, procedure, theory• Schedule• Qualifications• Cost, resources required• Conclusions• Special project‐specific sections• Thinking what sort of information that the recipient would need to feel confident having you do the project.
Project milestones
• Background– Faculty fault !!
• Technology review– That what you want to understand to do your project
• Aim understanding (unfortunately late)• Practical work (A must)
– MATLAB – DSP– VHDL– C …… etc.
Project milestones (cont.)
• Book writing– Hint : begin it from Day 1– No one will benefit from the book except you and your successors
– Template (word – Latex)
• Final presentation– Hint : A play ! hehehehehe– Theoretically half of the final grade is taken at that day– First ten ranked students get the same grade !
Tools and references needed
• MATLAB• C • VHDL / Verilog• Google
– Advanced search– Scholar
• sci‐hub.org , gen.lib.rus.ec
DIFFERETENT TRACKS
Department tracks:1. Communications:
• Communications as system level • Network • Biomedical • Microwave and electromagnetics
2. Electronics:• Digital Design • Analog Design (baseband (wired) and RF(wireless))• Mems• Embedded systems
32
Projects categories
• Research project – Aim theoretical study of hot topic of research and application is MATLAB
– Excessive Maths and knowledge – Perfect for top notch students and graduate students – Drawback: isolated from reality.– examples
• MIMO techniques• Convex optimization• Cognitive radio
Projects categories (cont.)
• System level design (90%)– Aim: To take a complex communication system study its standard transform your understanding to MATLAB code
– Adv. : team work , linked to outsourcing companies ex. Sysdsoft
– Disadvantages : not innovative , repeated– Examples Simulation
• UMTS • WiMAX• LTE
Projects categories (cont.)
• Implementation• Aim: to do the same as previous project but it ignores the background around each block and focus on implementation of DSP or FPGA
• Adv. : real system• Disadv. : As system Engineer you don’t really know the full picture
• Examples : same but we have here DSP or FPGA
Projects categories (cont.)
• Survey • Aim : to learn (only) about communication systems
• Adv. : easy , general view• Disadv. : not really a project (it is book‐presentation writing!)
• Ex.– Mobile Evolution from 1G‐4G – Advanced topics in wireless comm.– Etc.
Projects categories (cont.)
• Other NW layers• Aim : To leave PHY layer and focus on other layers such as MAC , NW layer …..
• Adv. Network Engineer is needed• Disadv. : we haven’t truly non‐PHY supervisor• Examples
– WLAN – Firewall– Wireless sensor networks
• Others – Aim : think outside the box– Adv. different and always winning– Disadv. : less knowledge– Examples
• Indoor coverage• Radar and satellite communication• GPS tracking• Car avoidance using LIDAR• Open BTS• Smart antennas • Quad Copters • ROV• Optical comm. links• ….. Etc.
Projects categories (cont.)
My project
• Designing ADC based RX for a High speed serial link (SerDes)
• Which category– Mix (small research , system level , circuit level, survey !)
• Adv. : knowledge , team work , practical (simulation)
• Disadv. : not innovative
General Background needed for communications
• A must– Digital comm. Sklar , our book (first 3 chapters)
• Preferred (specially in research)– Linear algebra Strang videos– Stochastic process , Estimation and detection
• Project specified (not a course !)– Mobile communication– CCNA– Optical comm. ……
My (our ) dream
• Collaboration (teams + TA’s + supervisors)• Complete system + implementation + application
• Paper (research)• Innovative idea !
