CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish December 22, 2013 Fourth Sunday of Advent “To renew all things in Christ” Dear Friends, Signs of Christmas are all around us! Evergreen trees are up and decorated. Porcelain angels and other Christmas knick-knacks are peering down from their bookshelf perches. Stockings are hanging on mantles. Glimmering Christmas lights adorn houses and trees, and nativity scenes take up their prominent places in our homes. Even a hint of cold weather signals that Christmas is near. Like many of you, I have been so busy with the busy-ness of Christmas, that the Christmas spirit has seemed elusive. Everything came so quickly because a late Thanksgiving seemed to rob us of that extra little time needed to get ready. Things changed for me when the school had its Christmas pageant this past Tuesday evening. Seeing all the school children acting out the birth of the Savior and singing their Christmas songs before a church full of smiling parents seemed to bring the Christmas spirit to life. That one program encapsulated the whole meaning of this time of year – a Christ-child is born! It is sometimes difficult to remember what Christmas is all about. We are so busy anyway, that when Christmas rolls around, things really get into high gear. We run from party to party, we rush to get our Christmas cards out, we frantically get ready for family arrivals, not to mention fighting the crowds for gift purchases. The traffic alone is enough to remind us of what this season is not about. Then again, isn’t much of this a part of what makes this season special? We often complain about the hustle and bustle of the season, but I happen to think that all of the commotion is part of what fills this season with joy. We go out of our way to create a holiday spirit. We do extra things to celebrate. We also make an extra sacrifice to face the shopping crowds, even if at the last minute, to show our love for our loved ones. Call me crazy, but I enjoy going right into the thick of shopping crowds. It fills me with happiness seeing so many people milling about. I love connecting with people I haven’t seen in years! Throughout the year, we deal with the ordinary stresses of work and home. Christmas time is different. We get into the giving spirit, helping us to realize that everything is not always about ourselves. Engaging in all of these things, we may not always have our focus fixed on Christ’s birth, but in the back of our minds, it is there. We realize that Jesus is why we become active in these expressions of love. Like no other season, Christmas is full of traditions that make the hearts of children eager and adults filled with wonder. Christmas has the power to evoke deep- rooted emotions. It may seem as though the commercialization and the activity of Christmas makes it harder and harder to maintain the spirit of the season, but that is only true if we allow it to. If all we do is focus on ourselves, then we can easily become distracted, impatient, and perturbed by the bustle of the season. On the other hand, if we fix our hearts on Christ’s birth – if we preserve the attitude of charity, generosity, family and loving bonds, then this little nuance brings the joy of this season to life. It really is a matter of how we approach things. My prayer for you this Christmas is that you don’t get too wrapped up in the petty things. Let the spirit of a babe 50 Years of Faith

ist” Dear Friends,

Signs of Christmas are all around us!

Christmas has the power to evoke deep-rooted emotions.
