Unit 1: Explore 2 DimensionsUnit 7: Explore Mixed Media

Relevant Departmental Notes: Assessment throughout this course is essentially, formative; artists can re-visit criteria to arrive at their final assessment grades. Your personal blog is regarded as part of your work and will be marked accordingly, alongside your sketchbook

Evidence: This will be in the form of sketchbook work, experimental pieces, final pieces, final outcomes, blog books and Tumblr uploads

Grading criteria: Pass / fail

English and Maths: This project will include functional skills in English and Maths. Please bear in mind your industry requires eloquent use of English and accurate use of figures, to which end, the continuing development of these skills are firmly embedded inside all your work.

Note on copyright and plagiarism: This process will require independent research. Copying from the internet and additional sources is not appropriate and violates copyright and will be classed as plagiarism unless fully annotated and credited. You must make your work your own. We need to see that you have an understanding of the areas that you have researched. Copying work directly from ANY source will not be tolerated. If you quote ANY existing material you must put it in quotation marks and in brackets, attribute the source / author. For example: “Copying is cheating” (Robbie McGovan, 2013, Miskin Theatre)

THE BRIEF

‘FOUR MESSAGES FROM THE WORLD’

Miskin Artists/ Designers,

You are to design the ARTWORK for a series of FOUR POST CARDSThe artwork must first be created as FOUR A4 sized art piecesThe four pieces must be CONNECTED VISUALLY or as a THEME of CHOICEThe cards must have a VISUAL MESSAGEThe artwork needs to be created as MIXED MEDIA piecesWhen completed they will be DIGITIZED (scanned) and RE-SIZEDThey should be either A6 or A5 ‘READY FOR PRINT’ post cardsAdd text with suitable fonts to the digital version if you likeThe cards must be printed in full colour and displayed together as a seriesThe final pieces and developments must also be displayed in Tumblr

FOUR MESSAGES FROM THE WORLD; – Chose a THEME for your card series! It can be about anything you want. Examples can be; ideological, like say something about how we treat our planet or; how to behave in a better way as humans or; accepting and embracing that people are different around the world. It can be from nature or the sea, or it can be about music, love, seasons, moods, children, animals, fashion, birthday, friendship and the list goes on. Anything you are interested in can be the theme. The most important thing here is that your artwork SENDS A MESSAGE visually! Also establish that the designs can be aimed towards a particular age group, in which you choose before you start your work.

The first part of this project will be work shop based You will research and learn how to draw and paint by using a range of tools and techniques

Throughout the project we will learn and investigate the formal elements, which are the ingredients of a piece of artwork, they make up an image or artefact and allow the viewer to get as much as possible out of it. The formal elements include line, tone, shape, colour, texture and space. You are to investigate these formal elements through all the work you produce in all the variety of media we will be using

When developing work within art and design, it is important to first develop skills in drawing from life. Many artists enjoy drawing from their imagination; however it is always based on knowledge of how to draw real things from in front of them. Being skilful at drawing is essential to all of those who work in the creative industries but don’t worry, drawing is a skill which can be learned and will continue to develop throughout your life. The more you practice, the better you will become at it!

Professional Practice: Please be aware that you will be putting professional practice into action within Miskin Arts, which is a professional environment in which you are effectively being given the opportunity to publicly test your skills and gain creditable industrial experience.

WORK SHOP BASED STUDIES – (SEPTEMBER – DECEMBER)

Research artists and find out how they have created their art pieces (critical studies) Include comments on how they have used FORMAL ELEMENTS Carry out your own drawings and paintings using techniques you have investigated Study the human body, details, objects, nature, animals, buildings, still life etc

It is important that some of these drawings and paintings are from direct observations Generate a range of drawing and painting skills from observations and other sources Evaluate your work and help evaluating others work

Repeat all of the above until work shop period is finished in JanuaryYou will be given weekly tasks for each week on TumblrUnit 1 (1.1, 1.2) - Unit 7 (1.1, 1.2)

IDEA GENERATION AND DEVELOPMENTS - (JANUARY/ FEBRUARY) Read the BRIEF and decide on a THEME you want to express in your four A4 artworks that

will become digital post card designs Collect and research post cards, stick in to sketch books as a mood board Include comments on how they have used formal elements, materials and techniques Start generating some ideas, thumbnail sketches, examples and explanations for what you

think you want to do towards your THEME Relate the ideas to artists and their work, show examples and explain which tools and

techniques you will try out which will be most suitable for your ideas in MIXED MEDIA Try these out and see how well they work Then explain in detail what you are planning to do and contribute to a group discussion

about your ideas. Here we are also discussing what the rest of the group is planning to do and we help each other with constructive, respectful advice and feedback

Write down the main points of your own and other’s opinionsUnit 1 (1.3, 1.4) Unit 7 (1.3, 1.4)

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS AND PRODUCTION OF YOUR FINAL PIECES (MARCH / APRIL) Use a range of materials, methods, processes and equipment when you now are making

your four final pieces. They are all in A4 and you need to use a range of mixed media when you create your artwork towards the THEME you have decided to express.

Be self-managed, keep deadlines, motivate yourself and keep sketchbook work neat See Task Grids 2.1 and look at all the options you have regarding materials, methods and

equipment Develop and refine your work further (refine means improve) Comment and make judgement on health and safety risk when using tools and materials Finalise your four A4 sized artwork , which is clearly connected visually and as a theme Scan in all four items Re-size each of them to A6 or A5 Add text with suitable fonts if needed Create alternative versions in Photo Shop by trying digital effects, filters and tools Display final outcome as PRINTED ITEMS, looking like real cards!
