Introduction

A Message from Julia Robertson Founder of Galen Therapy Centre

Hi, I’m Julia Robertson, and I’d like to thank you for taking an interest in studying with us.

I founded Galen Therapy Centre in 2002. Maybe like you, I was inspired initially by a very special dog, my special dog was called Huffo, a gorgeous yellow Labrador. He inspired me to develop a therapy that would help dogs with debilitating muscle pain, just as he suffered when he was only 6 months old.

He suffered, a sudden onset postural change that resulted in him being unable to lift his head from the ground. After extensive examinations and diagnostics, there was no rationale or diagnosis for this posture and obvious pain. it was therefore recommended to have him put to sleep. This was a devastating prognosis, however, luckily we soon discovered that this condition was a relatively simple but painful muscular neck problem – it seems so obvious now! From that moment I put together a treatment plan, mainly involving exercises and rich tea biscuits! Slowly, I was able to improve his condition and he led a happy life to the grand age of 17 years old!

This dreadful episode started my ‘nightmares’ as I realised that many dogs were not always getting appropriate treatment for excruciatingly painful, but manageable, muscle problems, mainly through a lack of understanding. As often happens, ‘out of bad comes good’, Huffo and his neck were the foundations of Galen Canine Myotherapy!

I’m thrilled to be able to say that since I set up the Galen Canine Myotherapy Diploma, our team of therapists have helped 1000’s of dogs to lead happy and healthier lives. I’d love you to embark on your learning journey with us, and together, we can enrich the lives of dogs all over the world.

Kind regards,

Julia Robertson

The Galen Approach Our Six Guiding Principles

Galen Canine Myotherapy is the leading canine myotherapy organisation in the world. It uses appropriate, effective and targeted massage techniques, and exercise advice to manage chronic muscular pain to reduce inflammation and to maximise muscle function. Galen Canine Myotherapy incorporates the unique knowledge that has been developed by Galen’s founder, Julia Robertson, through her treatment of over 8,000 dogs since 2002. She was one of the first, if not the first, known dedicated canine practitioners of this type in the UK and she continues to lead ground breaking research across the world.

Our Guiding Principles:

1. Choice-led treatment. 2. Owner empowerment. 3. High level of specialist knowledge and training 4. Behavioural knowledge 5. The sharing of knowledge.

6. Continual development.

1. Positive P.A.C.T The Galen Canine Myotherapy Diploma is different from other canine massage teaching ideologies. Firstly, we use our own method of handling dogs called ‘Positive progressive affective cycle of therapy’ (P.A.C.T) which allows them to always have a ‘choice’ during treatment.

We never use forced restraint, and treatment will always take place on the floor or on a low level,

which is where a dog is most comfortable.

2. Owner empowerment We recognise that when a dog is struggling, owners want to help. We encourage owners to get involved with their dog’s treatment plan, imparting techniques that are safe to use, along with exercise planning and ‘environment’ management.

3. High level of specialist knowledge and training All Galen Canine Myotherapists®*are qualified to an exceptional level, and the knowledge of anatomical and physiological learning is directed at functional application. They understand the dog’s anatomy in terms of movement, how the dog’s body works and how stress can be reflected through behaviour. This knowledge is then directed into a ‘dog centric’ application of choice-led treatment.

4. Behavioural Understanding We were the first therapy organisation to discuss the direct connection between muscle pain and specific behaviour patterns. We guide owners and handlers in understanding how muscle pain can be reflected in their dog’s behaviour. This information and knowledge is invaluable when assessing and detecting changes.

Page 5: Founder of Galen Therapy Centre · on to use Galen Canine Myotherapy extensively within their practices. This worldwide reach ensures that we’re always at the forefront of new developments

5. Sharing of knowledge The welfare of dogs is our primary concern and this takes priority over all other considerations. We believe in sharing knowledge through training, workshops, symposiums and events all over the world to improve the health and wellbeing of dogs. We encourage our associates to share this in the most appropriate and far reaching ways.

6. Continual Development

Much of our course content has changed radically over the years due to an evolving understanding of the behaviour and physical changes in dogs with muscular issues. We ensure we keep up to date with the latest evidence and findings and modify our treatment and teaching to incorporate this. Like any science, there are new discoveries constantly, and it’s vital for animal welfare that we’re at the forefront of current understanding.

How is the course structured?

Before starting the course there will be an informal interview either via telephone or face-to-face to ensure suitability for the desired course including relevant qualifications that the student possess (if required). At this stage all learners must supply a reference from a canine professional known to them (such as your vet).

The Full and Direct Access course starts with the theory part of the course which is to be completed using our online learning resources with support from tutors. All theory up to and including unit 5 must be completed before commencing the practical section to ensure a good level of learning before the application of knowledge.

- Theory Unit 4 The Principles of the Canine Skin, Lymphatic and Venous System. The skin, structure, functions and anatomy, in relation to it being the medium for massage. The lymphatic system, its function, location of major lymph vessels and nodes, the construction of both, veins of the thoracic and pelvic limb, anatomy of a vein, why these are important to comprehend in relation to massage therapy. - Theory Unit 5 The Principles of the Nervous System, Common Pathologies and Soft Tissue Injury. Introduction to neurological system, emphasis on the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems and massage can influence. Interdependencies of the body system, how massage influences the body holistically. Common pathologies – osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, spondylosis, OCD, muscle spasm, cramp, fatigue, dehydration. Understand the relevance of massage in connection with the effects of injury tissue repair, and how it can help with the prevention of muscular adhesions and scarring.

Part Two: The Practical Sessions

Learners are required to complete all practical group sessions which concentrate on anatomy and how it impacts from a functional basis in the canine.

We look at movement and what is required by the dog’s musculature to perform different actions, together with compensation issues, repetitive strains and how to start identifying them. Along with the use of palpation to assess and interpret, and techniques to help attain and then maintain maximum potential muscular health for all conditions. The practical sessions are the opportunity for students to demonstrate what they have learned during the theory units and to build on this knowledge, therefore it is vital that there is a good understanding and confidence around the theoretical part of the course.

Unique to the Galen Diploma, the first practical session is one where we look at human anatomy as a primer to canine functional anatomy, and this part of the course always receives good feedback from students. This is expertly trained by Sarah Dover-McCarthy and introduces learners to the skill of postural assessment then coupling that with allied muscular issues.

The opportunity to practice initially on humans is an essential and valuable lesson before imparting the same skills on the canine. Students are required to give and receive treatment, providing feedback to fellow learners. This session sets the whole approach for the rest of the practical sessions and is unique to us.

Practical training takes place with our Galen dogs. This allows us to go into the detail with appropriate and relevant case studies, and affords for a consistent learning process.

Throughout the process students will be given continuous and documented support and feedback and have the opportunity of one-to-one sessions within the class with a dedicated tutor.

With maximum of eight learners with two tutors, there is dedicated time for individual learning and adaptation of learning methods to suit the individual learner.
