Foundations Sports Group Football MethodologyPart 1 Rondos
10 years of evolution• The game is always changing therefore we must continue to evolve with the
game and its evolution. An ever changing game needs an open mind. To fully understand the game and its evolution is to understand human evolution. To create leaders, innovators and players that can continue to promote and grow the game . To use the game as a tool for the creation of values. The game is more than just a game it’s an opportunity to help young people to co-exist in our community by assisting them to develop character.
• Over the years through research, trial and error , we have formulated the training session based on a multitude of variables. In order to maximise the learning process requires not only the technical aspects of the game but also all the other important factors. Knowledge of the “ALS” They are
• Technical, Tactical, Psychological, Physiological, Morphological, Philosophical• The following slides explain how FSG’s model of player development works.
The House• We can compare football development to building a house• 1. The plan – in our case the plan is education which comes in
many forms.• 2. The foundations – The foundation represents a players skill level
or individual capacity to control pass dribble, the technical ability.• 3. The framework – This represents the system of play, we use our
W W system, our players learn positioning roles and responsibilities through this framework or structure.
• 4. The finish product.(House) – Through the construction/development phase we are left with a player that has a well defined plan, solid foundations, thorough knowledge and wisdom.
Gamification model• Based on scientific evidence people learn 90% of what their
learning when doing the real thing or simulation of the real thing.• Gamification is based on the notion that human beings are doers.
The concept is based on a remarkable chemical reaction called dopamine.
• Challenge – success reward(dopamine)• Dopamine is enhanced when we are actively engaged in a game, an
environment of challenge and competitiveness.• Myelin a neural insulator which scientists now consider to be the
holy grail of acquiring skill is developed through deep purpose driven practice. It prevents the electrical impulse in your brains nerve fibres from leaking out and allows greater speed and learning retention.
The 6 variables• 1.Technical, - The manual execution of an action.• 2.Tactical, - The understanding of the mechanics of the game/insight awareness and
game intelligence.• 3.Psychological, - The mind set, confidence, belief, attitude, mental strength.
Pertaining to, dealing with, or affecting the mind, especially as a function of awareness, feeling, or motivation:
• 4.Physiological, - The identification of physical traits or being in accord with or characteristic of the normal functioning of a living organism.
• 5.Morphological, - Taking into account the form and structure of anything.• 6.Philosophical – The identity, the style and the culture. Reasonable, wise, or learned.• These six variables affect the methodology, each variable must be considered.• Within each variable there is also a human variable, which needs to be considered.• Whilst these are areas that determine the how, they do not determine the why.• The why must always come first and the answer to the why is the human value.
The human value• The human value represents the moral and ethical responsibility that we
have to ensure the safety and well being of an individual. Our roles as coaches is to assist children to reach their full potential in life using football as a tool for the greater good.
• In senior football the trainer controls the player for the greater good of the team. The team comes first.
• In junior football the trainer must always put the individual ahead of the team. The result must always come second to personal development.
• The environment is crucial in maximising the learning process. It must contain the six variables, however with children fun and enjoyment builds motivation as is for adults. Building character through the environment we foster helps the children to reach their full potential.
• It is important that children are allowed to play at their level. This helps streamline the process and ensure equal opportunity.
The Methodology
• Guided discovery• Emphasis on divergent thinking parameters• Sub conscious decision making – Technical and tactical.• To play without conscious thought.(instinct)• Progressive timeline based on numbers & size.• Geometrical positioning model.(Triangles)• The game in its entirety as the teaching tool.• Positive reinforcement through story telling.• The formation of values
Session model
Geometrical teaching system• Learning through positional shapes.• Triangle, diamond, w, star, hexagon, the building blocks to
positional play.
Part 1 Rondos• Part 1 also used as a warm up.• Critical game elements within the content• Size of area commensurate to the level of player• Numbers 3 v 1, 4 v 1, 4 v 2, 5 v 2, 6 v 2, 6 v 3 etc• Positioning structure = the basic team shape• Smaller the space faster the thinking – give them time they will take it, take it away
the mind will adapt.• Cognitive elements • Divergent elements – doing two things at once and producing creative solutions to
problems• Exercise covers Technical, Positioning and movement.• Body shape – facing forwards urge players to use back foot – habitual or
conductive habits.
Rondo 3 -1• Over load – technical training with resistance• Body shape• Movement to support• Positioning off the ball – support• Geometrical shape triangle – start of tactical positioning 6 – 8 -10, 3 – 2
– 6 etc etc
Rondo 4 - 1• Over load – technical training with resistance• Body shape• Movement to support• Positioning off the ball – support• Geometrical shape diamond, example of positioning 6 – 8 – 10 – 9, 1 –
3 - 4 -6
Rondo 4 - 2• Over load – technical training with resistance• Higher resistance with extra defender, requires quicker ball circulation• Speed of thought and movement• Size of grid determines objective – High intensity defending bigger
space, speed of thought smaller space.
Rondo 5 - 2• Geometrical shape is the star and first step towards W• Positions 1 – 3 – 4 – 6 and 8 or 10• One left one right one middle one far• 2 lines
Rondo 6 - 2• Geometrical shape is the star with first introduction to the W + 1 star• Positions 1 – 3 – 4 – 6 and 8 or 10• One left one right one middle two far• 2-3 lines
Rondo 7 – 2 & 7 - 3• Geometrical shape is the Hexagon with first introduction to the W + M• Positions 2 - 3 – 4 – 5 - 6 - 8 and 10• One left one right one middle three far• 2-3 lines
Rondo 7 – 2 & 7 - 3• Within each Rondo are different objectives and rules that can be
implemented• Positional rotation 4 plays to 6 follows pass, 6 exchanges with 4• 3 plays to 2 as 2 offloads entire team rotates
Thinking rondos• The Rondo used to think in a divergent way, aim is to get players to
focus on multiple objectives• For example players must call out the colour of the bib that the player
who passes the ball prior to receiving. Player must call out colour that he intends to pass to prior to receiving.
Variations• Pass and move – rotation• Rotating pivot, every time a player passes the ball to the
pivot he must take his place
Variations• Pass and move – empty space• One touch compulsory – two touch, one touch – two touch
compulsory
Variations• Partner rondo two in two out• Split pass to score – must be adjacent to each other.
