The d-school is a creative studio where students use white boards, colourful notes and various other materials to create ideas to solve real world challenges. Wild ideas are encouraged at the d-school.

The HPI d-school at UCTInnovation through design-led thinking

In May 2019 the d-school team and students from various institutions celebrated the successful completion of the d-school’s academic programme in design thinking.

Students in their multidisciplinary teams presented project solutions to project partners. This was followed with Friends and Family Day, when student teams presented their projects to supervisors, friends and family members, and enjoyed a graduation ceremony.

These events brought to a close the Foundation Programme in Design Thinking of the Hasso Plattner School of Design Thinking at the University of Cape Town.

The programme ran over 12 weeks in the first semester, for two full days per week. Students came from various disciplines, encouraging diverse

ideas to flourish. They learnt to work in multidisciplinary teams of four to six students; each team guided by a professional coach.

The teams worked on real world challenges provided by the d-school’s project partners.

Working on these projects, the students were taken through a programme of learning the tools and process of design thinking, towards ultimately developing a design thinking mindset.

The d-school’s Foundation Programme in Design Thinking teaches students a human-centred, collaborative process for developing creative and innovative solutions to complex real world challenges.

The Hasso Plattner School of Design Thinking at the University of Cape Town (d-school) is the only academic institution in the region which offers academic training and capacitation in design thinking to university scholars and professionals in the public and private sectors.

The d-school was founded in Cape Town in August 2015 with funding, IP and academic support from Prof. Dr. Hasso Plattner — co-founder of software company, SAP AG, and chairman of its Supervisory Board — and the Hasso Plattner Trust.

The establishment of the HPI Schools of Design Thinking at Stanford in the US, and at Potsdam in Germany, brought academic rigour to design-led innovation practice, and made training programmes in design thinking available

to academic scholars and leaders in the private and public sectors.

The HPI d-school at the University of Cape Town is developing a context-responsive programme aimed to suit students and practitioners from South Africa and the African continent.Our semester-long programmes in design thinking take place twice a year, in the first and second semesters.

Students who are registered at any university of higher learning institution across South Africa are encouraged to apply.

Team ChallengeThe challenge was to find ways that a company could attract, retain and promote black employees, in a world where its upper management is not reflective of South Africa’s demographics.

Team ProposalThe team responded with a proposal to bring multi-disciplinary and multi-level teams together to create an inclusion blueprint. Various inclusion activities include an open topic wall, a hackathon and team work to solve complex workplace issues surrounding inclusivity.

Team ChallengeThe challenge was to create an enabling environment for mothers returning to work to continue the provision of breast milk to their baby, in a world where breastfeeding is not seen as a workplace issue.

Team Proposal The team proposed a space for employee well-being which prioritises wellness, diversity, inclusion, employee rights. This space has video education, notices, prompts and a private designated area for mothers to express breast milk and be comfortable.
