The Positive Cycle of EducationEducation has the power to transform lives – students, families, future generations and the community.

You have the power to help students help themselves by achieving their educational dreams - despite financial burdens.

The result? Your life will be enriched by the knowledge you made a difference – not only in one person’s life, but many more.

As educated students enter the workplace, your community will improve. Perhaps some of these students will work at your doctor’s office, local hospital, or attorney’s office. They may teach at your grandchild’s school, protect your friend’s home from fire, or respond to your need for law enforcement professionals.

Communities that support education flourish. You have the power – help us provide scholarships to all deserving students who have the drive to succeed through higher education.

“The goal of education is the advancement of knowledge and the dissemination of truth.”

- John F. Kennedy

Their Future is in Your Hands…Your Future is in Their HandsIn the past year, through the generous support of our community partners, the IRSC Foundation assisted 3,000 students with scholarship funds. We celebrate this accomplishment because we know its impact is life-changing.

By providing deserving students with the financial support they need to pursue higher education, you are setting in motion a positive cycle for generations to come. Our communities benefit from confident, well-trained employees. You and your family might one day benefit from the services provided by an IRSC graduate.

We invite you to transform a student’s future by supporting the IRSC Foundation.

Please give today – we welcome your partnership, whether it is through financial gifts, with service as a volunteer, or by sharing your talents.

Keeping the Community SafeEvents at the local, national and international levels make it clear our safety is dependent upon highly-skilled public safety professionals. For more than 40 years, IRSC has trained most of the area’s first responders. Jeremiah Willis, a baccalaureate student at IRSC, vividly recalls being homeless. Abandoned by his adoptive father at a young age, Willis lived on the streets with his brother and adoptive mother. Inspired to better his situation and help others, Willis enrolled at IRSC to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Struggling to pay tuition, Willis applied for financial assistance through the IRSC Foundation. He was awarded scholarships from the Walter and Lalita Janke Charitable Foundation and the Treasure Coast Chiefs of Police and Sheriff Scholarship Fund which enabled him to complete his Associate Degree in Criminal Justice with highest honors in May 2014. He is the first in both his birth and adoptive families to earn a college degree.

Willis is currently employed as a patrol officer with the Vero Beach Police Department where he proudly serves and educates the local community. He aspires to become a captain or high ranking officer after earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice in 2016.

“The scholarships I’ve received through IRSC have played an important role in my success. I love going to work every day, and I’m proud to serve and protect the community.”Jeremiah Willis, Vero Beach Police Department

Keeping the Community HealthyIf you need an MRI, an ambulance, nursing care or dental work, chances are the health care professional providing that service has been trained at IRSC. IRSC offers more than 20 health care programs supplying a steady stream of graduates for Treasure Coast hospitals, nursing homes, physicians, dentists and health care facilities. Students gain clinical, hands-on experience as part of their education.

Judy Boswell, a licensed practical nurse at Raulerson Hospital, takes pride in providing the Okeechobee community with quality health care. She is pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Nursing, followed by a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at IRSC.

The variety and flexibility of nursing classes at the Dixon Hendry Campus in Okeechobee allow Judy to work and continue her education. Judy also credits her success to scholarships she was awarded through the IRSC Foundation. She received the Raulerson Hospital Auxiliary, the Alex and Roxanna Booth Foundation, and the William and Helen Thomas Charitable Trust scholarships.

A mother of three and a patient care advocate, Judy says, “Receiving scholarships meant so much more than financial support. They also gave me a step up the ladder of confidence. It made a tremendous difference to my children and me.”

“My patients inspired me to continue my education. I’m grateful for the

opportunity to serve them, and for the student-friendly services and scholarship

support at IRSC which have made higher education possible for me.”

Educating Future GenerationsFlorida will need more than 100,000 new teachers over the next decade. IRSC has expanded its programs in education to help meet the community need. Graduating well-trained educators who are knowledgeable about best practices in instruction is important to our community because these teachers will be educating our children and grandchildren.

Dawn Dukes loves working with children! She knew teaching was her calling from an early age. She has worked in day care, Pre-K and kindergarten facilities since she was 18. Eager to continue her education, Dawn earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Exceptional Student Education from IRSC.

“The professors were very personable and made it easy,” she said. Through the Win-Win Scholarship program, Dawn received financial support which made it possible for this mother of three to afford to go back to college. She now works as a 4th grade teacher at White City Elementary School in Fort Pierce. “It’s a rewarding job and I really like to see the growth in my students,” she added. Her long term goal is to earn an advanced degree in child psychology.

I was told that I was no longer eligible for financial aid, and this scholarship made it possible for me to complete my last semester and earn my degree. It was a godsend.”Dawn Dukes, Teacher, White City Elementary

Providing Professional Business Services to the CommunityAccounting is the language of business, and IRSC accounting students learn skills needed for success in this high-demand field. Florida is the 4th state in the U.S. for the number of jobs in accounting, ensuring graduates excellent career opportunities.

Janet Pineda wanted to pursue a degree in accounting, but she didn’t know how she would be able to pay for classes. She was given the opportunity to earn four years of college tuition through the Take Stock in Children program, which provides scholarships to deserving students in middle or high school and challenges them to complete high school, meet regularly with a mentor, and remain drug and crime free.

“Coming from a single-parent home, I knew my mom wouldn’t have been able to afford to send me to college. I’m so thankful for the Take Stock in Children Scholarship,” Janet says.

She earned her Associate Degree at IRSC and her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Florida Atlantic University. She is employed as a staff accountant at Wicks, Brown, Williams, and Company, CPAs in Okeechobee and is working toward her certified public accountant license.

Janet recalls, “In high school, I met regularly with my amazing Take Stock mentor. She always listened and gave me sound advice. Because of that experience, I started mentoring for the Take Stock in Children program this year.”

“I remember when I received my scholarship - I was a freshman sitting in my English class. I felt like I

was living a dream when I realized I could actually go to college and have a bright future.”

Keeping the Community Running SmoothlyAccording to Manpower Group, skilled trades represent the most challenging segment of the workforce for employers to staff throughout the U.S. The image of air conditioning and automotive technicians as low-skilled labor is changing with technology including computer analytics and digital controls. IRSC is ranked in the Top Three Colleges in Florida for Trade Certification. Chris Finch was always interested in fixing cars, working in the automotive field since the late 1990s. After getting laid off, he knew his ticket to a better job was increased expertise, but was unsure how he could afford to pay for specialized training. Through the IRSC Foundation, Chris received the Win-Win and TechPrep Scholarships to help him gain the expanded skills needed to make him more employable.

With the financial barrier removed, he enrolled in the Automotive Service Technology Program and received competency credit for what he already knew. The 36-year old chose the IRSC program in Martin County where he could start at any time, learning through hands-on laboratory experience and online components.

“I learned a lot about electricity and suspension,” he said. “The teachers and the entire experience were great.”

Finch has completed both the Basic and Advanced Certificate in Automotive Service Technology and is currently employed as a Line Technician with Dyer Chevrolet.

“I wouldn’t have been able to go to college without my scholarships. With three children to support, money

was really tight.”Chris Finch, Line Technician,

Dyer Chevrolet

The Power of ScholarshipsScholarships provide more than financial support – they demonstrate to students someone believes in their dreams.

The majority of students at IRSC need help. Despite holding full or part-time jobs, they struggle to pay for food, gas, rent, and support their families while they attend college.

They dream of a better life where they are employed in their chosen career field and able to provide for themselves and their families.

And after achieving their dreams, many of these students return to lend a hand to other students by giving money for scholarships or serving as mentors.

Scholarships make it all possible, creating a positive and continuous cycle of success.

The IRSC Foundation will customize a scholarship to match your area of interest. Naming a scholarship in honor and/or memory of a loved one is

a wonderful way to pay tribute and help students.

Legacy of EducationAn endowed fund is a permanent way to fund scholarships, teaching chairs, and more – far beyond your lifetime. For a minimum gift of $10,000, you can leavea legacy to benefit future generations.

The Fielden Institute for Lifelong LearningA dynamic group over the age of 50, members of the Fielden Institute for Lifelong Learning explore topics from computer skills to historical and literary happenings. They learn for the sheer pleasure of learning.

Programs are peer-driven, meaning members are often both teacher and student. Peer Leaders volunteer to lead discussion and study groups, hands-on activities, field trips, lectures, book and film groups, all in a welcoming and appropriate environment for the adult learner.

Current events are explored during a series of lectures conducted by visiting lecturers from all walks of life. The Distinguished Lecture Series is a signature piece of the Institute’s programming each year, and lectures are held in both Stuart and Vero Beach during late Fall and early Spring. The series brings experts and seasoned educators to the podium on current events including subjects in foreign policy, the environment, education, health, and the economy.

The IRSC Foundation oversees the Fielden Institute under the direction of an active External Advisory Committee. In 2015, members enjoyed 55 offerings held throughout the four counties with 46 volunteer peer leaders, including 20 newcomers, who shared their passion for specific topics with the more than 500 members.

Car dealer George Stanich died in 1997.

This year, he’s sending 30 IRSC graduates on a road trip to earn a degree.George had a favorite saying: “Some people say I’m really lucky, but the harder I work, the luckier I get.”

He wanted students to have the opportunity to work really hard in school and be able to leave their own legacy some day. Thanks to a bequestin George’s will, many students will have this opportunity.
