I have my shade cloth about 300mm above the solar weave which reduces the internal temperatures in summer considerably and would recommend this practice. Feeding: I believe nutrition is very important in cultivating healthy orchids, and I feed Soph. wittigiana with the best I can obtain. I use a balanced fertilizer NPK 15:3:12 that contains only nitrogen in its simplest form, nitrogen nitrate which is immediately available to the plants and formulations containing urea are avoided as it is lethal on plants grown in inert materials such as pine bark. It decomposes the material and causes the mix to rapidly become acidic. The trace elements must be in the Nitrate form as they are not compatible with trace elements in the Sulphate form. Watering: I water with tank water and fertilize all my Cattleyas 150 ppm N every 5 days in summer decreasing to 35ppm every 10 days in winter and increasing the duration in inclement weather. I also give a monthly feed of Sea Sol combined with the fertilizer. On especially hot days I water daily. As my Soph. wittigianas are mounted, I water them every day in summer and every 2nd or 3rd day in winter, as I do for all my mounted plants. Potting Media: When I received the two plants both were growing in 50mm pots containing 4mm Perlite and peat and both had exceptional root growth when I mounted both in mid Sept 2010 one onto coarse black tree fern, the other onto a bottle brush branch (revolution green), with a little sphagnum moss under the roots mass. The tree fern was too coarse and the plant did not attach itself willingly and is now on bottle brush also, whereas the branch was readily accepted and the results speak for themselves. Cultural Notes: I share the same sentiments as March contributor Pam Price, species are fascinating to own and some are very endangered such as Soph. wittigiana due to land clearing and indiscriminate mining, making their preservation very worth while.

JUDGES’ CHOICE SPECIAL INTEREST

PLANT OF THE MONTH

Plant Name: Sophronitis wittigiana Named by Barbosa Rodrigues in 1878 after Emile Wittig who first sent plants

back to London in 1880 from the interior of Espirito Santo state S.E. Brazil

where its natural host is Vellosia shrubs or humus pockets.

Grower: Steve Stitz

Housing: I house all my plants in a modest 4 x 3 m shade house cov-

ered in winter and summer with 50 and 70% shade cloth respectively plus solar

weave covering the roof and about 80% of the side area which gives good air

flow as the enclosure is in a fairly exposed position where I grow hard cane

Dens. and species Cattleyas and associated relatives all have to tolerate moder-

ately bright light. I have my shade cloth about 300mm above the solar weave

which reduces the internal temperatures in summer considerably and would

recommend this practice.

Feeding: I believe nutrition is very important in cultivating healthy

orchids, and I feed Soph. wittigiana with the best I can obtain. I use a balanced

fertilizer NPK 15:3:12 that contains only nitrogen in its simplest form, nitrogen

nitrate which is immediately available to the plants and formulations containing

urea are avoided as it is lethal on plants grown in inert materials such as pine

bark. It decomposes the material and causes the mix to rapidly become acidic.

The trace elements must be in the Nitrate form as they are not compatible with

trace elements in the Sulphate form.

Watering: I water with tank water and fertilize all my Cattleyas 150

ppm N every 5 days in summer decreasing to 35ppm every 10 days in winter and

increasing the duration in inclement weather. I also give a monthly feed of Sea

Sol combined with the fertilizer. On especially hot days I water daily. As my

Soph. wittigianas are mounted, I water them every day in summer and every 2nd

or 3rd day in winter, as I do for all my mounted plants.

Potting Media: When I received the two plants both were growing in

50mm pots containing 4mm Perlite and peat and both had exceptional root

growth when I mounted both in mid Sept 2010 one onto coarse black tree fern,

the other onto a bottle brush branch (revolution green), with a little sphagnum

preservation very worth while.

Editorial

This months Newsletter is a bit early as there wasn't one in May, we have the minutes from the last meeting, the benching and

1st place photos from that meeting, I am trying out a new format for the photo page, I hope it meets with approval.

On page 6 along with the Guest Speaker info, Bark supplies and the committee meeting notes. Page 7 has all about the

coming Bus Trip.

The Cultural Information Meeting will be on the 4th of June 2011 as usual and the July meeting will be at Jim and Marie

McCubbin's home in Springwood on the 2nd of July, lots of Paphs will be in flower if the grey mould doesn't get them, the

way the weather is these days who knows what will happen.

Everyone will be pleased to know Maree and myself had a great time in Paris visiting our Son and Daughter in law, we

visited the area around Normandy staying at B & B for two nights had a look at a very long tapestry about the fight in 1066

between the Normans and Saxons. Back in Paris visited a few Museums went to Montmartre, had an interesting boat ride at

dusk along the Seine River through Paris, a lovely city caught in the 19th Century.

COMMITTEE MEETING NOTES - 8th MAY 2011

The Committee of the Logan and District Orchid Society met on 3rd May i.e. on the eve of the set-up of the Centro

Display.

The Committee worked through a checklist prepared by Trish Roulstone last year, ensuring that all bases were

covered (we added a few more).

From my point-of-view, it was a great success. Good organisation and a good outcome.

The Committee is working on preliminary planning for the August Annual Show , the 9th July Bus trip and the

Christmas breakup.

More later.
