that the most stolen book from public libraries is the Bible? How’s that for irony...?

that the largest fine for an overdue library book

was $345.14 computed at 2 cents a day for a poetry book returned forty-seven years after check-out (1955-2002) in Kewanee, Illinois?

that there are more public libraries in the United States than McDonald’s?

that there are 150 libraries around the world where you can check out a person to tell you a story instead of having to read a book? - beats streaming I guess...

that Jacob Grimm, Casanova, David Hume, and Lewis Carroll all worked as librarians?

that science fiction writer Issac Asimov is the only author to have published books in nine out of the ten Dewey library categories? – the only one he missed was philosophy.

that academic librarians will answer more that 56.1 million reference questions this year? – almost as many as our South Coastal librarians will answer this July/August...

It’s a lovely thought, and you definitely should take some time to be lazy this summer. But if you have ever been in our library in the

summer, you know that’s not the way of things here. And that’s fine too. Here is a taste of what’s happening this summer in your library:

Libraries Rock! Join the Summer Reading Challenge—adults, children and teens! Complete 10 activities of your choice to complete the challenge and win prizes! Remember: you can laze in a lounge chair— or tree—and read away. All challenges start on June 1st and end on August 11th!

For the “grown-ups” in July and August:• Enjoy musical concerts from Motown

to Celtic to swing bands to vocalists• Research your family tree—online• Dance the summer away with

John Brillantes• Celebrate National Coloring Day on

August 2nd (sure, bring the kids too)

For kids in July and August:• Rock the Mic with hip-hop and

reading—at the same time

• Enjoy weekly story and craft times• Like the American Girls? So do we—

have you tried American Girl bingo?• PAWs for Reading returns—read to

your favorite pup at the library

For teens in July and August:• It’s the annual Teen Art Show—enter

and submit your artwork by July 2nd, winners announced on July 18th at 7pm

• “Crafternoons” help pass the hot summer afternoons

• “Chill Out Matinees” also help cool down those too-hot beach days

• Karaoke night on July 11th at 5pm!

For detailed information, and registration requirements, please stop by the library and pick up a brochure, call the library at

302-539-5231, or check out our website at southcoastal.lib.de.us. We won’t be lazy until fall, but you can stock up on books, movies, and music to help you relax this summer.

“Summer is the annual permission slip to be lazy.”

Robots Invade the LibrarySouth Coastal Library is proud to welcome our new robotic overlords! Starting this summer, the library will be hosting a robotics program with three different robots designed to cultivate children’s interests in science, technology, engineering, and math while promoting skills in leadership, problem solving, strategy, self-confidence, and team building.

The first and largest robot is called Cubetto and is designed for children ages 3-5. Cubetto is intended to provide children with a hands-on coding experience through the use of colored instruction blocks. The second is called Sphero, affectionately referred to as “Spark” or “Sparky” by library staff and is designed for children ages 8-12. (He also highly amuses the library staff. We can’t code him, but we can make him interrupt lunch hour in a startling way.) Sphero has a clear, spherical design so that children can see the inner workings of the robot. In addition to its sleek design, Sphero operates through an app where children can design and share their own complex programs. The final and smallest robot is called Ozobot. Like Sphero, Ozobot is also intended for ages 8-12 and has the ability to function through an app. Children can also program Ozobot to perform tasks through the use of colored markers.

The library is excited to offer this new program and looks forward to planning more events like this in the future.

At the June 15th Bethany Beach Town

Council Meeting, FOSCL President Norbert

Kraich accepted a very generous donation

of $5,000 from Mayor Jack Gordon for

FOSCL and the library. As Mayor Gordon

noted, the Council presented the donation

in recognition of the terrific work the South

Coastal Library and its staff does for the

citizens of the town and for the surrounding

community. Mayor Gordon said that the

Town Council has been proud to be part

of the effort over the years to help keep

the South Coastal Library the terrific local

resource it has become. President Kraich

thanked the Council and assured them

that their generous gift would go directly

towards continuing to help the library

serve the community and to achieve its

community outreach goals.

Keep Up the Good WorkIt has been a busy spring for Delaware staff, Friends, Trustees, and all supporters of Delaware Libraries. Advocacy is on the rise and working on all levels; locally, statewide, and nationally; the word is out that libraries are essential to our communities.

On April 24th librarians, Friends, and Trustees gathered in Dover to participate in Delaware Library Legislative Day visiting their state Representatives and Senators to thank them for their support and solicit continuing help in meeting Delaware Libraries’ legislative needs for the upcoming budget year 2019. On May 8th a group of Library advocates from Delaware including State Librarian, Annie Norman, and Skip Dye, President-Elect 2018-19 of United For Libraries, participated in National Library Legislative Day on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. The group had meetings with Senators, Chris Coons and Tom Carper,

and Betsy Coulbourn, aide to Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester. Each meeting afforded the group an opportunity to thank and inform our Senate and Congressional representatives on issues facing Delaware Libraries statewide and nationally. These included need for the following: Reauthorization of the Institute of Museum and Library Services Act of 2017 allowing libraries to advance employment, entrepreneurship, and education; support for Net Neutrality and equal Access for Broadband and Technology; support for fast affordable Broadband; and preservation of an open Internet.

On June 6 Delaware Libraries welcomed state legislators and library partners to Dover Library for Delaware Libraries Legislative Open House. It was an opportunity for meet and greet on all sides and an opportunity to show off Delaware Libraries. Following closely behind this event The Delaware Division of Libraries bi-annual Library Town Meeting took place on Thursday June 7th at the Duncan Center in Dover. First Lady Tracey Quillen Carney as Honorary Chair of The Delaware Library Card Campaign spoke to the group of Staff, trustees, Friends and other library supporters about her work with the libraries as part of her three pronged initiative entitled “First Chance Delaware”

It is almost that time!!! The Annual Summer Book Sale at the South Coastal Library, sponsored by the Friends of the South Coastal Library takes place on August 9th, 10th, and the 11th. The success of the sale depends on community volunteers and your donations of materials. It is never too late to contribute materials for the sale. As you do your spring/summer cleaning, we welcome your donations of gently used books published within the last ten years preferably, with the exception of classic titles. We also welcome donations of children’s books, DVDs, and CDs; unfortunately, we are NOT able to accept textbooks and encyclopedias. Please bring all your donations to the South Coastal Library during normal library hours. If you can volunteer your time and talent for set up, take down, or assisting at the sale, please contact Fran at [email protected]. For any other information, contact Esther at [email protected]. So come and join your friends and neighbors and find that special book, CD, or DVD to enjoy during your summertime at the shore. All proceeds from this event go toward enhancing South Coastal Library’s services to the community. The Annual Summer Book Sale is a highly anticipated community event and a reflection of your generosity and commitment to the success of our library. We look forward to seeing you there.

to facilitate and encourage public and private partnerships to give children a chance to succeed. To this end Delaware libraries are promoting early literacy with First Lady Carney as Honorary Chair of The Delaware Library Card Campaign.

Secretary of State Bullock stopped in to speak to the group and to praise the Delaware Libraries’ staff and the superb work and service they provide to all Delawareans. He spoke of the effectiveness of advocacy efforts of Friends, Trustees, and supporters.

Secretary Bullock congratulated Delaware libraries for the success of elevating their presence in the state.

Annual Report for 2017-2018

We’re Friends Helping Friends Make Libraries Better! Our mission is three-fold:Outreach to Friends groups in Delaware, Advocacy for our libraries, and networking for the common good. We invite all Friends of Libraries and library lovers to join us in fulfilling our mission.

The Friends Board consists of:President: Kay Bowes (Brandywine Hundred Library) Secretary: Theo Loppatto (South Coastal Library)Treasurer: Gwen Elliott (Kent County Public Library)Member at Large: Bob Wetherall (Dover Public Library)Member at Large: Kay Wheatley (Seaford Public Library)Member at Large: Steve Newton (New Castle County)

Currently the Friends has 25 individual members with the Delaware Division of Libraries as a group member.

The Friends of Delaware Libraries has decided to pursue an adjacent plan with DLA — becoming partners instead of an actual division of DLA. With our goal aimed to working with Friends groups, we believe that we can be significant help with library advocacy and other contributions to the libraries in Delaware. Therefore, we plan to partner with DLA on Delaware Library Legislative Day, National

Library Legislative Day, and on other opportunities to speak and act with Delaware legislators on behalf of Friends groups.

Since our plan now has deviated from being a division of DLA, we feel we can be more effective as the support group for the Friends and Trustees of our libraries. Accomplishments this year:• Frequently forwarded and/or originated information on the

Delaware Friends listserv and FODL Facebook page• Participated in the Delaware Library Legislative Day (Dover,

DE) and in the American Library Association Library Legislative Day (Washington DC)

• Provided FODL buttons for legislators and advocates for Delaware Library Legislative Day

• Members attended Delaware State Joint Finance Committee Hearings and provided goodies for the legislators

• Members attended many meetings about library funding throughout the state, both for state and county

• Provided an Auction Basket for the Delaware Library Association/Maryland Library Association Conference

• Presented an Advocacy workshop at the Bridgeville Friends Annual meeting, a meeting of the Sussex County Independent Library, and have one planned to present at Harrington Public Library this spring.

• Sponsored two workshops at the MLA/DLA Conference in Cambridge, MD., both presented by Beth Nawalkinski, Executive Director of United for Libraries — one on getting authors into the library and one on fundraising ideas.

• Helped to fund the first ever “Escape Room”, sponsored by DHSS Library, at the MLA/DLA Conference

• Presented a “Passion” poster to Mike Jackson, Director of Management and Budget for the state of Delaware

• Presented a “Library Champion” plaque to Rick Geisenberger, Secretary of Finance, Delaware, as well as a “Passion” poster

The Friends of South Coastal Library’s (FOSCL) Beach & Bay Cottage Tour committee is in the process of finalizing arrangements for the 27th annual tour to benefit the South Coastal Library in Bethany Beach. We are pleased that this year’s tour will again feature 10 amazing homes in the Bethany area sure to please tour goers with their unique features. Sneak peaks have begun in the Coastal Point weekly since mid-May, and ticket sales are brisk. Since we usually sell out, make sure to get your ticket soon.

This year’s homes are in North Bethany, Bethany, and South Bethany along with a couple slightly inland. We have an oceanfront home, new construction, and renovated homes for a variety of ideas. The tour is easily bikable since it is so compact, and buses are required for some of the gated community homes. You can easily drive to homes that have public parking, and our parking volunteers will gladly help you park legally. Clear directions to the homes will be given to you along with your tote and booklet.

If you are on the mailing list, tour brochures were mailed in late May with an order form

and envelope. Tickets are $30 each and you can split your visits between both days or complete the tour in a single day; however, you can only visit each house once. You can get your ticket by:

• Using the order form (download from website or pick up at library) with a check or credit card and mailing it to the Beach & Bay Cottage Tour, PO Box 753, Bethany Beach, DE 19930

• Stopping by the front desk of the South Coastal Library until July 18; on July 19-26, purchase in library meeting room.

• Visiting the tour’s secure tour website at beachandbaycottagetour.com and ordering your tickets with a credit card.

Your ticket purchase entitles you to a tote bag containing your tour booklet, which is your ticket for both Wednesday and Thursday, booties, fan, and parking pass, along with complimentary copies of local beach magazines, often with articles highlighting our tour homes.

Since your ticket is essentially a tote bag, we cannot mail tickets. You may pick up reserved

tickets at the South Coastal Library in the meeting room just off the lobby starting July 19 at 10 a.m. through the days of the tour. Pre-purchased tickets are guaranteed, so don’t wait till the last minute to purchase a ticket. Pickup hours vary so check the sign on the door of the meeting room. Tickets are non-refundable.

If you can’t participate in the tour this year, consider making a donation. Donations of $150 or more entitle two guests to a cocktail party on July 19 honoring our homeowners. It is a highly anticipated event of Bethany’s summer season. Remember all proceeds from the tour tickets, raffle, and donations directly benefit the South Coastal Library. This is FOSCL’s primary fundraiser, along with a summer book sale.

In addition, a limited number of tickets will be for sale starting July 17 at five local merchants (Browseabout Books, Bethany Books, Mc Cabe’s, Rooster’s Nest, and Carolina Street). Tickets reserved in advance must be picked up at the library only, not at the local stores.

Please remember that no children under 12, babies, or pets are permitted in the tour homes. Please note that you will be visiting private homes that may not be handicap accessible.

For updated information, visit the tour website at beachandbaycottagetour.com; look for “Sneak Peeks” in the Coastal Point; and like us on Facebook at facebook.com/beachandbaycottagetour.

We expect the tour to be a sellout and recommend you purchase your ticket now.
