2. Course Instructors Dr. Richards Dr. Chu Dr. Ashman Dr. Janis Dr. Harding Dr. Drew Jones Dr. Randall Dr. Howard Dr. Wall Dr. Drollinger Dr. Ryan Jones 3. Dental Anatomy & Occlusion Course Objectives 1. Be able to identify/differentiate/and talk about teeth Number teeth according to multiple numbering systems Understand and use correct dental terminology 2. Identify and describe all classes of the primary and permanent dentition By their Crowns By their Roots By their Pulp (nerve) 3. Describe the principles and mechanisms of occlusion as it occurs within the normal human dentition. Demonstrate the static and dynamic relationship of the dentition in the framework of a healthy temporomandibular joint (TMJ) complex. 4. Develop Hand Skills Draw teeth Wax teeth 5. Utilize CAD/CAM technology in analyzing and creating digital wax-ups 6. Pass dental anatomy portion of NDBE-1 4. Dental Anatomy & Occlusion Course Format Classroom Format: Attendance is mandatory There MAY be a daily interactive clicker quiz (via Turning Point) at the beginning of each class, as well as occasional formative quizzing Bring laptop to each class Attendance and Participation tied to Professionalism grade Lab Format: Attendance and participation Wax-up 7 teeth Digitally wax-up 4 teeth Impressions, molds, stone casts Articulators to simulate jaw function, and analyze occlusion Assessments 8 summative didactic assessments about every 3 weeks. 2 waxing practical 1 Tooth Identification practical 5. Dental Anatomy & Occlusion Course Format This course will often integrate ACTIVE LEARNING techniques: To facilitate active learning in the classroom, many in-class lectures have been offloaded to short, self-paced online videos to provide students with fundamental concepts prior to class (Blackboard Learn). This creates opportunities during scheduled class time to apply concepts using the following activities: Tooth Identification w/ real teeth (Clinic Based Situations) Draw teeth Digitally design teeth E4D Clinical case simulations Wax-Up Teeth 7 Wax-Ups 4 Digital Wax-Ups 6. Dental Anatomy Resources Vital Source Textbooks: Woelfel's Dental Anatomy, Eighth Edition. Rickne C. Scheid, D.D.S., M.Ed; Gabriela Weiss, D.D.S., 2012. Introduction to Waxing 9. Waxing Kit Wax Adders Wax Carvers 10. Waxing Kit - Wax Adders #7 Spatula Adding large amount of wax PKT #1 (Larger) PKT #2 (Smaller) Basically different sizes of the same instrument Primary function is to carry heated wax from the source to the tooth wax-up or to reheat and melt wax 11. Waxing Kit Wax Carvers Hollenback PKT #3 Discoid Cleoid Tanner Carver #3 Hollenback Carver These should NEVER be flamed! 12. Waxing Kit Wax Carvers Hollenback Carve and shape hardened wax Flat/less rounded surfaces No Flame! 13. Waxing Kit Wax Carvers The PKT #3 Carve and shape hardened wax Developmental Grooves **Burnishing Cusp Ridges No Flame! **Burnish to make something shine by rubbing it with a smooth instrument 14. Waxing Kit Wax Carvers Discoid Cleoid Discoid (rounded) Concave surfaces Cleoid (pointed) - grooves No Flame! 15. Waxing Kit Wax Carvers Tanner Carver Carve and shape hardened wax Elongated discoid hollenback No Flame! 16. Todays Lab Exercise E4D CAD/CAM Technology WHAT IS CAD/CAM? Acronym for Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing. Computer systems in many industries that are used to design and manufacture products. The term CAD/CAM implies that an engineer can use the system both for designing a product and for controlling manufacturing processes. For example, once a design has been produced with the CAD component, the design itself can control the machines that construct the part. 25. Todays Lab Exercise E4D CAD/CAM Technology How is this technology used in dentistry? (CEREC, E4D) Instead of using an outside lab, CAD/CAM allows for dental restorations to be designed and created in the dental office. This includes: Crowns Veneers Inlays Onlays Bridges Implant Restorations How will we use this technology in this course? In the D1 year, students will use the Compare software (located on the 6 scanning stations in the sim lab) to evaluate their wax-ups, which they create by hand. They will also do multiple digital wax-ups using the Design software which will be loaded on to the student laptops. You will do this hundreds of times during the dental anatomy/morphology course, which will ease you into the next phase of CAD/CAM dentistry with E4D. 26. Todays Lab Exercise SCANNING and using the COMPARE software Tuesday 8/26 1:30 Benches 1-12 2:20 Benches 13-24 3:10 Benches 25-36 4:00 Benches 37-48 Tuesday 9/2 1:30 Benches 49-60 2:20 Benches 61-72 3:10 Benches 73-83 Groups of 12 will spend 50 minutes with Jackie for initial hands-on experience with scanning and the Compare software. 27.
