Part I - General

Part I - General

These By-Laws may be cited as the

Subject to these by laws a person may be awarded the Degree ofMaster of Education in Educati6nal and Development of psychology,Master of Education in Science Education,Master of Education in Educational Management,Master of Education in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages or,Master of Education (General)if s/he

has been a registered student of the University for the period. prescribed by this part,has completed to the satisfaction of the Vice-Chancellor, the course of studyprescribed by these By-Laws and the regulations and rules of the University,has fulfilled the requirements for the degree of Master of Education in the seiectedarea of study,has paid such fees and other dues as may be to the University, and;has fulfilled any other requirements prescribed by these By-Laws and the regulationsand rules of the University,

Subject to these By-Laws the minimum period for which a student should be a registeredstudent for the degree of Master of Education shall be two semesters.

A student shall be required to complete the requirements for the degree of Master ofEducation before the expiry of six years from the date of first registration.

The requirements for the degree of Master of Education shall consist ofsatisfactory participation in courses carrying 24 credits,completion of in course and end of course evaluation for core courses andelective courses andthe submission of a dissertation.

A candidate shall be deemed to have fulfilled the requirements for the degree of Master ofEducation if s/he passes the in course and end of course evaluation and has the dissertationaccepted by the Board of Examiners.

These By-Laws and the schedule shall come into operation with effect from the first day ofthe month of January, in the year two thousand five.

Part II - In course and end of course Evaluation for the Degree of Master of Education

The list of courses and the syllabuses and the evaluation procedures for the degree ofMaster of Education shall be those set out in the schedule (course structure) and theSenate shall have power on the recofirmendation of the Faculty of Education to amend thecourses and the syllabuses and the evaluation procedures.

'fhe course of study for the evaluation shall be of two semesters <Juration unless otherwisedecided by the Senate and the end of course evaluation shall be heid as soon as possibleaftel the completion of the course of study.

The end of course evaluation for the degree of Master of Education shall be held at theend of each semester.

The end of course evaluation for the degree of Master of Education shail be condu6eclby a Board of Examiners constituted for the purpose.

The Board of Examiners may test any candidate by means of oral questions or any orherform of evaluation and also take into consideration the work done by a candiciaie duringthe course of study.

A student shall not be permitted to take the end of course evaluation unless the Dean ofthe Faculty shall have certified that he has completed the course of studies for the end ofcourse evaluation by attending such proportion of lectures tutorial classes and other formsof instruction in the subject matter of each paper of that part of the end of courseevaluation as may be prescribed by the Senate.

A candidate shall take the End of course evaluation on the first occasion on which theEnd of course evaluation is held after the completion of the course of studies unless theSenate for some specified reason permits him to take the End of course evaluation on thenext subsequent occasion on which the End of course evaluation is held; and rvhere acandidate does not take the End of course evaluation on the first occasion ori which theEnd of course evaluation is held after the compietion of the course of studies, he shall bedeerned, unless the Senate determines otherwise, to have taken the End of cours*evaluation on the first occasion. which shall be taken into account in computing the torainumber of occasions on which the subjects of the End of course evaluation may be takenby the candidate.

7. A candidate who fails in one or more courses shall be so informed by the Registrar inwriting.

A candidate who fails in one or more courses shall again take that subjecr or thosesubjects on the next subsequent occasion on which the evaluation is held, and where a.

candidate dose not take that course or those courses at that part of the evaluation on thatoccasion, he shall be deemed, unless the Senate determines otherwise, to have taken thatcourse or those course on that occasion, which shall be taken into account in computingthe total number of occasions on which that course or those courses may be taken by thecandidate.

The total number of occasions on which a candidate may be allowed to appear for anygiven course at the evaluation shaU not exceed three.

In computing the total number of occasions on which a candidate may be allowed toappear for any given course there shall be taken into account any occasion on whichhe/she is deemed to have taken the evaluation in terms of section ? or section 9 of part nor both.

The pass mark in each course shall be 50Vo of the maximum marks that could have beenau,arded for that course.

Part III - The Submission of the Dissertation

Every candidate for the Degree of Master of Education shall submit a dissenationaccording to rules and regulations framed by the Higher Degrees Committee of theFaculty of Education.

The dissertation shall be a presentation of original work in a specified branch ofeducational study.

3. The area of research once approved by the Higher Degrees Committee shali not bechanged except with the specific approval of the Higher Degrees Committee granted forgood reason.

Any amendments to the title of the dissertation should be approved by the HigherDegrees Committee of the Faculty of Education before the submission of the dissertation.

A student shall submit the dissertation not earlier than the end of one year from the dateof first registration.

Each dissertation shall be examined by two or more examiners. An oral examination ofthe subject matter of the dissertation. should also be held.

The Board of Examiners shall have the power to recommend to the Senate thai a,dissertation be accepted, rejected or amended. In the case of amendments beingsuggested such annendments shall be effected and the dissertation resubmilted in therevised form within a period of three months/one yedr frorn the date of thecommunication to the student of the decision of the Board of Examiners, subject to theprovisions af Section 3 part 7. In the case af minor amendrnents, 3 months shall beapplicable which shall be deci^ded an the recontntendatiott of the Baard of Examiners..

If a candidate has his dissertation accepted by the Board of Examiners before passing theevaluation for the degree of Master of Education the fact of the acceptance of thedissertation shall be rvithheld until the candidate passes the evaluation for the degree ofMaster of Education.

Part IV - Interpretation

In these By-Laws unless the context otherwise requires:'touncil" means the Council of the University of Colombo constituted by theUniversities Act. No. 16 of 1978.

"Registrar" means the Registrar, Acting Registrar, Depr:ty Registrar, Senior AssistantRegistrar, Assistant Registrar and any other officer authorized to sign for and on behalf ofthe Registrar of the University of Colombo.

"Senate" means the Senate of the University of Colombo constituted by the UniversitiesAct. No. 16 of 1978.

2. Any question regarding the interpretation of these By-Laws shall be referred to theCouncil rvhose decision thereon shall be final.
