Foreword

World Teachers' Day, held annually on October 5th since 1994, commemorates teachers’ organizations worldwide. Its aim is to mobilise support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers.

According to UNESCO, World Teachers' Day represents a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development.

"Teachers… ultimately determine our collective ability to innovate, to invent, to find solutions for tomorrow.  Nothing will ever replace a good teacher. Nothing is more important than supporting them.” (Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General). 

The DepEd Memorandum No. 168, s 2011 stated that the 2011 Teachers Month Campaign should be for the whole month of September and should culminate on October 05, 2011 which is the World Teachers’ Day. It also averse that all public and private elementary and secondary schools, division and regional officers are enjoined to conduct the significant program, projects and activities.

In compliance with the DepEd Memorandum No. 168, s. 2011, dated July 06, 2011, the Congressional National High School in cooperation of the CNHS Supreme Student Government salutes the Filipino teacher in celebrating the 2011 Teachers Month Campaign and World Teachers’ Day in conducting significant programs, projects and activities. The celebration of TMC and WTD of the school adopted the DepEd theme: “My Teacher My Hero” and aims the following: a.) highlight the unique role, service and commitment which teachers play in guiding the families, strengthening the communities, and building the nation; b.) revitalize the image of and respect for teaching as a vocation by increasing public awareness on the value of teachers in Philippine society and in national development; c.) use the occasion to call on everyone to contribute in making teaching as an attractive profession and in giving teachers the needed support and assistance; d.) generate widespread support for teachers in particular and education in general; and, e.) express gratitude sincerely for the positive influences teachers had on the Filipino learners.

A. Preparations

To design programs, projects and activities for the plan and implementation of the celebration of the 2011 Teachers’ Month Campaign and World Teachers’ Day, all school head teachers and CNHS Supreme Student Government adviser conducted a meeting on July 12, 2011. They organized the School TMC Committee and secure the support of all departments and organizations of the school.

All departments of the school were given an assignment together with the different organizations that serves as a partner for the program, projects and activities for the implementation of plans. The CNHS Supreme Student Government monitored the department and organization assigned to each programs, projects and activities. The CNHS Supreme Student Government disseminate the information to the students and to the CNHS community by posting streamers, installing a bulletin board for the schedule of activities, roaming room to room and using the social networking sites for the programs, projects and activities with its mechanics, procedure, rules and regulations. The subject teachers and advisers encourage their students to join and participate the contests and other activities.

B. Programs, Projects and Activities for 2011 Teachers Month Campaign and World Teachers’ Day Celebration

Mentor, 2nd parent guru, maestro/maestra are some of the name called to the teachers. There are many ways in which to honor and salute the teachers. The love, sacrifices and devotions that the teachers accorded for their professions cannot be measured, that is why everyone should give thanks to their teachers.

I. Saying “Thank You”

September 01, 2011 signalled the start of the countdown for October 05, 2011 which is the highlight of the month long celebration of the Teachers Month Campaign and World Teachers’ Day. Streamers with the message “Congressional National High School Salutes the Filipino Teachers” were posted at the Gate of the school and at the ICT building.

a. Freedom Wall

The CNHS Supreme Student Government installed a freedom wall in various building of the campus. The students wrote their messages, remarks and quotation on the improvised wall. Each freedom wall installed in various buildings of the school were full of positive note written by the students to express their gratitude to their mentors. Some of them wrote a poem dedicated to their adviser.

b.) Sending Cards and Thank You Letters

Another way of expressing gratitude to the teachers by their students’ is through sending cards or thank you letter. The SSG devised 8 boxes as a drop box for the student’s cards and letters. The 8 boxes are assigned to each department in which the teacher belong to organized were the cards and letters should go. Everyday the SSG officers found a colourful and creative card in the boxes. Some of the students showed their creativity and artistic design for the cards sent to the teachers.

c.) Face book / blogs / Fun Page

The ICT department of Congressional National High School headed by Mrs.Leylanie V. Adao created a face book / blogs and fun page. Students who were not able to create and device a card for the message of thanks to their teachers were also given a chance to participate and cooperate through electronics and social networking cites. Majority of the students utilizes their knowledge in the modern technology to have part in this event. Most of them expressed their thoughts and ideas through blogs and fun page.

II. Contests

The CNHS Supreme Student Government highlight and honor the contributions of the teachers in the society by conducting different contests such as, Essay writing contest, song writing contest, jingle making contest, impersonation, talentadong guro 2011 and on-line voting for the teachers in the following category - cutest teacher, prettiest teacher, coolest teacher, heartthrob teacher, funniest teacher and fashionista teacher.

a. Essay and Song Writing Contest

Through this competition, the theme: “My Teacher, My Hero” of World Teachers’ Day celebration were given much more emphasis because of the talent and skills of the students to write an essay and song. The judges experienced a hard time in choosing the best composition because of the uniqueness and originality of the participant’s writing.

The contest where held on September 14, 2011 at the Science Laboratory and was spearhead by the English department care off Mrs. Irene Marcelo. The contest rules for essay writing were a.) the contest is open to all year levels; b.) The essay must be original and shall be within 250 to 300 words; c.) only one essay per student will be accepted; d.) the theme of the essay is “My teacher, My hero”; e.) all entries must be submitted on or before September 12, 2011, Monday. No entries will be accepted after this date. The contest rules for song writing contest are as follows: a.) the contest is open to all year levels. b.) It may be participated by individual or group of 2-5 students; c.) The song must be an original composition, of 2 stanza and a chorus; d.) the song must discuss the theme “My teacher, My Hero”; e.) all entries must be submitted on or before Monday, September 12, 2011; f.) The song will be interpreted (in solo, duet, trio, quartet and quintet) and be accompanied by any musical instrument (guitar, keyboard, flute, etc.).

The criteria for choosing the best composition for essay writing contest were a.) content and depth of knowledge on theme which 50%; b.) writing style and structure - 30%; c.) originality – 20%. Criteria for song writing contest were a.) content and relevance to the theme – 50%; b.) structure – 10%; c.) rhythm – 15%; d.) interpretation and audience impact – 15%; e.) originality – 10%

Awarding of winners were held during the October 05, 2011 World Teachers’ Day program. Certificate of recognition and simple token were handed to the winners by the Supreme Student Government Officers.

b.) Jingle Making Contest

This is one of the most awaited events for the celebration of TMC and WTD because the MAPEH department made this more extravagant by sponsoring the said activity. The contest gives more emphasis on the choreography, style and of course the lyrics of the jingle. In the mechanics created by the MAPEH department headed by Mrs. Kathleen Grace H. Sayaman, showed the enthusiasm of the students in joining in this kind of contest. The criteria for choosing the best jingle were as follows: a.) lyrics – 35%; b.) musicality 35%; c.) originality 30%.

Awarding of winners was held during the October 05, 2011 World Teachers’ Day program. Certificate of recognition and simple token were handed to the winners by the Supreme Student Government Officers.

c.) Impersonation Contest

This contest is all about the impersonation of the teacher’s mannerism, gesture and some style in the classroom by the students. This contest is assigned to Mathematics and Science department care off Mrs. Marian S. Penales. The department assigned made it clear to the participants that they do not have to cross the line between the impersonation and character assassination. Furthermore, they stressed that the following are prohibited during their performance, which are, badmouthing a teacher, embarrassing a teacher by making the teacher as the object of mockery and insult or using the activity to “get even” with the teacher.

Mechanics of the contest are as follows: a.) audition is open to all students of CNHS; b.) the student will pick the name of the teacher that he/she will impersonate; c.) the participant is given 3 minutes to impersonate the teacher. The criteria are a.) appropriateness to the character impersonated – 40%; b.) stage presence 20%; c.) audience impact – 20% and d.) costume and props - 10%. The contest was held on September 22, 2011 at the CNHS AVR.

Awarding of winners was held during the October 05, 2011 World Teachers’ Day program. Certificate of recognition and simple token were handed to the winners by the Supreme Student Government Officers.
