Service of Worship March 4, 2018 at 11:00 am: Third Sunday in Lent
Celebration of Holy Communion
Welcome! Thank you for joining us today for worship.
This morning we celebrate the Eucharist (the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper,
or Holy Communion) by intinction (dipping the bread into the cup).
We also provide a gluten-free alternative. After receiving the elements
you may come to the railing to receive a blessing from the pastors.
Prayer of Preparation Gracious God, in this time of worship, turn our hearts to you that we may be
transformed. We need to be reminded of your compassion and peace. Amen.
Welcome

Greeting Our God with Joy
Call to Worship Elder Robyn Hales
One: Friends, we gather this day to celebrate life –
All: The life we have been given by God,
One: The life we share with one another in community,
All: The life that Jesus gives in abundance.
One: Let us be grateful for the joy of life,
All: And let us worship God.
* Processional Hymn No. 182 “I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say”

Renewing Our Relationship with God
Prayer of Confession
Holy and gracious God, at times we feel so frail and fragile, getting
blown about by the latest crisis, by bad news, by our own short
tempers and failings. You call us to hold fast to what is good, but so
often we flounder, unable to find that solid thing that will center us
again. Help us, we pray. Help us to see you as our center, and to cling
to the good that you create in the world. Help us to set aside all our
jealousies and prejudices, all of our betrayals and lies, all that adds
to the world’s hurt. Help us to grow even more into Christ’s likeness,
that we will bear his love and truth to the world. We pray in his
name. Amen.

Opening Our Hearts to God’s Word Scripture Lessons
Romans 12: 1-2
I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to
present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God,
which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but
be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern
what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Luke 23: 34
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they
are doing.”
After the readings
Leader: Hear what the Holy Spirit is telling God’s people.
People: Thanks be to God.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine
is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Dear Friends,
Thank you SO much for the lovely goodbye and
generous gift last Sunday.
It has been my honor and privilege to work for
Forest Hill Church and for you all these past
years.
It’s hard to leave such a wonderful place but I
am looking forward to retirement and
celebrating springtime in my new home!
Fondly,
Becky
