“Expect A Miracle!”

Are you facing something on your life that needs a powerful intervention of God? Maybe you’re thinking it’s going to take a miracle to settle the issue. If that’s true, then you’re on your way to a better place than you may realize… because you serve a miracle-working God who is more than able to transform your situation. How we need to remind ourselves that Jesus Christ is the

“same yesterday, today, and forever!” (Hebrews 13:8). The same Jesus who went about performing miracles 2,000 years ago is still with us today, in the person and power of the Holy Spirit. The Key to Receiving from God

I remember a good while ago, having a conversation with a good friend of mine, whose girlfriend had just broken up with him. He was unwilling to accept the fact that she didn't want the relationship to continue. He was adamant that they would get back together. In fact, he said he knew they would get back together! I asked him how he "knew" that they would reunite, and he told me that God had promised to give him whatever he wanted – that God would give him the very desires of his heart,

and that his desire was for this young lady.

My friend was quoting – and misunderstanding – Psalms 37:4, which says, "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." Unfortunately, all too many Christians attempt to use this verse of Scripture in a vain attempt to turn the Lord into their personal version of Santa Claus!

So, if God indeed wants to give us the desire of our heart, what is the key to allowing that to happen? It is found by learning to experience the entirety of the message found in this verse, and “delighting yourself in the Lord.” Think about a child discovering the magic of what happens when he blows for the very first time the feather-like seeds of a dandelion flower. He laughs with delight and wants to do it again and again. This is what I think of when I see myself delighting myself in the Lord. Discovering the magic of making something beautiful happen, and then reaching for another flower to do it again and again!

God's Timetable

"By your patience possess your souls." – Luke 21:19

Patience reminds us that our lives work on God's schedule, not our own: "Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God's will. Then you will receive all that He has promised." (Hebrews 10:36) He works from His own divinely considered all-knowing timetable. If you think about it, expecting your own homemade timetable to fit perfectly in line with God's is pretty silly. Who's seen what's going to happen tomorrow: you or the Author of life itself? So don't panic if God seems like moving slowly – it's because He's making everything just right for you. If you know God has you where He wants you, but you start to feel itchy, don't be tempted to run on ahead of Him! Your impatience will just make you and everybody around you miserable. Patient endurance can mean honoring God in a situation when you'd far rather pack up and leave. He knows what He's doing – and, if He hasn't told you, that's probably for the (your!) best!

Page 8: Forecast October 21, 2013 - Hilton Baptist Church...October 21, 2013 The secret to happiness in life is learning to… “Expect A Miracle!” Are you facing something on your life

Just As If You'd Never Sinned by Rick Warren

You don't have to be hesitant or shy about coming to God for forgiveness. The Bible says, "Let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most" (Hebrews 4:16).

At the throne of grace, you will find not scolding, punishment, or rejection. When we come to God with our sin, we receive his mercy, and we find his grace.

What's the difference between mercy and grace? Mercy is forgiveness for all the things you've done in the past. Grace is the power to change in the future. You need both. You need mercy for all the things you've done wrong in the past (forgiveness). And you need grace, the power to change in the future. God says that when you come to him with honesty and humility, you will receive his forgiveness.

Let me tell you how not to get God's forgiveness.

You don't beg God. He wants to forgive you more than you want to be forgiven. You don't have to beg.

You don't bargain or bribe. "God, I'll never do it again! I'll live this kind of life. I'll tithe 20 percent." You don't bargain. You don't bribe. You don't beg.

You just believe.

What do you believe? You believe God's promise in Hebrews 4:16.

How do you do it? You just confess. Confession is not saying, "God, I'll never do it again." It's saying, "You're right, God. It was wrong. I was wrong." The Bible says in Romans 5:1, "Since we are justified (acquitted, declared righteous, and given a right standing with God) through faith, let us grasp the fact that we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (AMP).4 What does it mean to be justified? It means "just as if you'd never sinned." Wouldn't you like to have a heart that is clean as freshly fallen snow? No matter how deep the stain of your sin, God can take it out. You can experience newness in your life like never before… beginning now! It doesn't mean you're perfect. It simply means you're forgiven!

Page 9: Forecast October 21, 2013 - Hilton Baptist Church...October 21, 2013 The secret to happiness in life is learning to… “Expect A Miracle!” Are you facing something on your life

Receiving His Perfect Gift

We are often encouraged to share the wonders of God's love through the uncompromising truth of His Word. There are so many all around us who are in great need! We live in a lost and dying world full of people who desperately need to know God's plan of forgiveness and restoration. But as we share the truth and minister to others, let's also remember to make the time to personally receive ALL our Father has to offer.

When Jesus asked the Samaritan woman for a drink of water, she thought the request was quite odd since Jesus was clearly

a Jew, and Jews did not associate with Samaritans; "How can you ask me for a drink?" (John 4:9). Rather than explain His radical views on social interaction, Jesus took the opportunity to introduce the woman to the gift of God. "Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.” (John 4:10)

If we only knew! I often imagine a loving Father who has given the greatest gift the world has ever known. We approach and examine the gift. We ask questions and study the gift. We even shake the gift and then proudly display it on our shelf, but we never actually open the gift and receive what's inside. If we only knew! "Every good and perfect gift is from above" (James 1:7). His gifts are perfect; and if we only knew, we would open and receive them with abounding joy!

His gift of living water is still available today. This gift refers to our Salvation by the spiritual transformation of our heart, but it also refers to His on-going gift of a victorious life of peace and contentment; "Everyone who drinks this water [from the well] will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst" (John 4:13-14). His gift of Salvation is free through faith in Jesus Christ, and peace is assured through a humble submission to His will. But we continually rebel and pump from the wells of this world – we drink polluted lies and continually thirst for more.

Approximately 650 years earlier, God gave the same message to the people of Jerusalem: "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken Me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water" (Jeremiah 2:13). If we only knew! We sit beside a Spring overflowing with the best tasting water imaginable, but we turn away and pump sludge into our broken pots.

God has great plans for each of us – plans much bigger and brighter than anything we can accomplish through our own effort. Let's rediscover the gift of living water and put an end to our thirst! Let's return to the Spring and continue our journey in obedience. Let's drink freely and daily receive His perfect gift.

Faithful Over A Few Things In the mid 1850's a troubled teenager from Northfield, Massachusetts moved to Boston to try to find work. He hadn't gone to school beyond the fifth grade; he couldn't spell, his grammar was awful and his manners were brash and crude. Thankfully, an uncle took him on as a shoe salesman, on condition that he be obedient and that he attend church. The boy had been raised in a Unitarian church, which denied the full divinity of the Messiah and did not emphasize human need for

salvation from sins. At his uncle's church, he began learning about these things, but decided that he wanted to enjoy the pleasures of the world and wait until just before he died to give His life to the Lord. However, through the kindness and persistence of his Sunday School teacher, Edward Kimball, the rebellious teen was encouraged to continue coming to church and study the Bible regularly. Kimball said he had never seen anyone whose mind was as spiritually dark. On April 21, 1855, Kimball decided to pay a special visit to the boy at his uncle's shoe store in order to ask if he would commit his life to the Lord. The boy listened closely and gave his heart to God that day. Immediately he began sharing his faith with others. Later, the young man moved to Chicago. He wandered the streets to find other young boys to bring to his Church. He had a passion for saving souls and determined never to let a day pass without telling someone about the gospel. The boy's name was D.L. Moody. And he became a great man of faith. Among his many achievements on either side of the Atlantic was the founding of Moody Bible Institute. In fact, to this day, Moody Bible Institute and the Moody Broadcasting Network continue to reach thousands of souls on a daily basis. It was estimated that before D.L. Moody passed away that as many as a million souls were brought to the Lord. What a testimony Moody had! But, we often overlook the fact that it was a faithful Sunday school teacher's obedience and persistence that changed the course of history. We may think we are doing very little for the Lord, that we're merely teaching a few kids at Sunday school. But the Lord can use anyone in His service... those whose hearts are given to Him. Be an Edward Kimball – reach out and touch someone today for Him. Through one touch, you may be touching future millions!

Who Was So Depressed He Asked God to Take His Life? by Rick Warren

"I know what I'm doing. I have it all planned out – plans to take care of

you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for" – Jeremiah 29:11

Here's a Bible trivia quiz: Can you name any of three men in the Bible who became so depressed that each of them asked God to take his life? Answer: Moses, Elijah, and Jonah. Each of them got depressed, but for different reasons; depression is

always a symptom of a deeper problem. Like a warning light on your car, depression is meant to get your attention; it shouts something is wrong! The real problem is not how you feel, but the cause of those feelings. Here are three of the most common causes of depression. 1. Fatigue (Moses’ problem): When you try to maintain a hectic pace week after week in spite of physical and emotional exhaustion, you set yourself up for depression. Or, if you try to play God, attempting to control everything and everyone around you, depression will eventually catch up with you. In Moses’ case, the solution was to learn to delegate (Numbers 11:10-17). 2. Fear (Elijah's problem): Whenever you swallow your anxieties, your body keeps score. Instead of focusing on your depression, ask, "What is it that I'm afraid of? What's got me worried?" Resolve the worry and your blues will vanish, if that's the cause. In Elijah's situation, the antidote was to trust God to handle things out of his control (1 Kings 19:1-18). 3. Frustration (Jonah's problem): When you don't see a purpose behind the events of your life, when it all seems so arbitrary or hopeless or unfair, then depression strikes. Life without meaning and significance is depressing. That's why God's solution to Jonah's depression was to help him see the bigger picture. Perspective is a powerful cure. When Jonah finally understood God's purpose for his life, his depression faded. Does life sometimes seem like an endless rat race to you? Ask God to open your eyes and help you see his purpose for your life. God, who made you, has this to say about you: "I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for." (Jeremiah 29:11 TEV). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This article was reprinted form a Rick Warren devotional which was written prior to the tragic suicide of Rick’s eldest son, Matthew. We continue to pray for the Warren family believing God

will somehow turn their emotional scars into stars to light the darkness of others!

The Last Impression

Members of the Women's Missionary Union group at one Southern Baptist church a few years ago were disturbed because a widowed church member and her three small daughters had stopped attending church services. When they discovered the reason to be a lack of suitable clothes, the ladies corrected the situation in a generous manner. They took up a love offering and bought them several beautiful outfits to make certain they looked good enough to blend in with their church crowd.

When the little girls still failed to appear at Sunday School, some of the ladies called to inquire about their absence. The mother thanked them sweetly for the clothing and explained: "The girls looked so nice, I sent them to the Episcopal church!"

-------------------------------------------------------------------- Many exciting things are happening at HBC!

Every week we have new folks visiting and checking us out on Sunday mornings and many are returning and joining us on a regular basis.

Our monthly Friday Community Outreach Dinners have been averaging around 70 guests. We are planning this week for another

great Halloween “Trunk-Or-Treat” outreach.

God is moving at HBC in a powerful way!

Thank you for your continued prayers and financial support!
