Forces and Motion

Forces• A force is a push or pull on an

object. Forces cause objects to move or to stop moving.

• There are many kinds of forces.

• The motion of any object can be understood by looking at all of the forces that are acting on that object.

Motion• The motion of an object can

be described by its position and how that position changes over time.

• If an object is moving slowly, its position will also change slowly

4.01 Determine the motion of an object by following and measuring its position over time. The learner will conduct investigations and use appropriate technologies to build an understanding of forces and motion in technological designs.

Forces

• You apply forces to objects every day. • You walk by pushing your feet against the

ground as you move forward. Your muscles also move parts of your body by applying forces.

4.05 Determine factors that affect motion including:•Force •Friction. •Inertia. •Momentum

Energy• Force requires energy.• Energy is the capacity to do work.• It can be used to move muscles, operate

machines, cook meals, and heat rooms.• Gravity is the force that pulls all objects on

earth toward the center of Earth.

4.03 Explain how energy is needed to make machines move.

Forces and Motion

Balanced forces• Forces that

have a net force of zero

Unbalanced forces• Forces that

have a net force that is not zero

4.04 Determine that an unbalanced force is needed to move an object or change its direction.

Motion and Inertia

Inertia• The tendency of an object

to remain at rest or in motion unless it is acted on by a force.

Momentum• The product of the mass

and velocity of an object.• Momentum is changed by

how fast an object is moving and how much mass that object has.

05 Determine factors that affect motion including:•Force •Friction. •Inertia. •Momentum

Friction

• The force that acts on an object to stop its motion.

• Acts in the opposite direction of the direction in which the object is moving

05 Determine factors that affect motion including:•Force •Friction. •Inertia. •Momentum
