Coming SoonMobile Shakespeare: Pericles, Prince of Tyre7pm, Monday, October 20, Charlotte’s Place, 107 Greenwich St.Pericles, one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays in his own time, is the story of a prince whose life is threatened after he solves the puzzle of a murderous king. Forced to flee across the seas, he em-barks on an odyssey that will see him fall in love, lose a daughter, and eventually recover everything he thought he’d lost. Continu-ing its commitment to bringing free Shakespeare to the com-munity and strengthening audience engagement with the arts, The Public Theater will mount its Mobile Shakespeare Unit again this October with a free three-week tour to the five boroughs of Shakespeare’s Pericles, Prince of Tyre, directed by Rob Melrose. The free mobile unit tour (October 20–November 8) will bring free Shakespeare to audiences who have limited or no access to the arts by visiting prisons, homeless shelters, centers for the elderly, and other community venues. Following the mobile tour, Pericles will have a sit-down run at The Public Theater. Information: Jenn Chinn at [email protected].

Ninth Annual 12-Step Recovery RetreatDecember 5-7, Little Portion FriarySwitching to a Higher Octane of Fuel. You’re invited to join us for our Annual Recovery Retreat on December 5-7, 2014. This year, bouncing off Fr. Richard Rohr’s remarkable words about Step 1 of 12-step recovery, Stuart Hoke will lead our annual retreat on topics related to the power of God available through surrender. From his book, Breathing under Water, Richard Rohr makes a paradoxical observation—a theme so familiar to those who walk the 12-step walk: “Until you bottom out, and come to the limits of your own fuel supply, there is no reason for you to switch to a higher octane of fuel. For that is what is happening! Why would you? You will not learn to actively draw upon a large source until your usual resources are depleted and revealed as wanting. In fact, you will not even know there is a Larger Source until your own sources and resources fail you” (ch. 1). This retreat is open to members of all 12 Step fellowships and anyone affected by them, including, but not limited to AA, Al-Anon, ACOA, CoDA, DA, NA, OA, SLAA, etc. Retreat costs includes 2 nights accom-modations and meals: $225 for private rooms, $200 for shared rooms. Information: Sandy Blaine at [email protected] or [email protected].

Bulletin BoardUpdate—Pedestrian Bridge and 2 RectorAs the deconstruction of 68/74 Trinity Place begins, use of the pe-destrian bridge between Trinity Church and 74 Trinity Place will be restricted. The bridge will be accessible through the assistance of se-curity staff on Sundays for regular services and events, Tuesdays and Thursdays for the Brown Bag Lunch Program, and Thursdays for New Beginnings activities. Trinity ID badges will no longer provide access to the bridge. The use of the bridge can also be requested through Trinity staff, who will arrange for the bridge to be staffed by 68/74 se-curity. Otherwise, staff members and congregation who participate in activities at 74 Trinity Place should enter at the lobby level. This better enables the security staff to monitor comings and goings in the build-ing. A firm closing date of 68/74 has not yet been determined. Con-gregational meetings and other gatherings can continue to be sched-uled in these spaces until the opening of the Parish Center @ 2 Rector. The final closing date will be shared as soon as possible. During this transitional time, Charlotte’s Place has extended hours and services. Contact Jenn Chinn with questions at [email protected] or 212.602.9661.

Improvements at Trinity ChurchWork continues on improvements to the interior and exterior of Trin-ity Church. Work has been completed on the enlargement of the nar-thex space and in the choir room in the Manning Wing. The next un-dertaking is the main vestibule lighting and interior Astor Memorial bronze doors. In order for this work to be completed the main Broad-way entrance will be closed from October 14-October 29. Signage will be posted to direct those entering the church from either the north or south porch or from the west entrance. As always the sacristy area exit is available in case of emergency. Many thanks for your patience.

Register For the 2015 Holy Land PilgrimageSunday, March 8-Friday, March 20, 2015Registration for the Holy Land Pilgrimage is in full swing, with half the spaces already filled. If you would like to participate, register be-fore October 15 for a $200 discount. Registration closes November 15. See Fr. Daniel Simons for more information, and take a brochure in the pews to learn more. Note: informational forums will be held at coffee hour on October 5 and October 12.

Congregational Voice“Wisdom is better than weapons of war...” (Ecclesiastes 9:18a NRSV). Throughout the Old and New Testaments in the Bible, there are examples of people using wisdom to overcome potentially deadly situations. One such example is the story of Abigail (1 Samuel 25:2-42), a woman who tapped into her innate wisdom to defray sudden destruction that was about to come upon her entire household by the hand of David. Abigail’s husband Nabal had no compassion on David’s men and David in haste was on a mission to destroy Nabal’s household. However, Abigail, “a woman of good understanding” (1Samuel 25:3), showed David and his men kindness and her life and her entire household was spared. May God grant us and our world leaders the wisdom that is stronger than weapons of war, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
