The Illinois State Archives recently acquired a Civil War muster roll from the 144th Illinois Infantry Regiment. It was donated to the Archives by Jean Shimunek of Alton whose great grandfather served as clerk for the 144th. Archival Conservator Alex Dixon performed conservation work on the muster roll by hydrating and flattening the roll and removing tape. The muster roll will be digitized and added to Military and Naval Department Record Series 301.018, “Administrative Files on Civil War Companies and Regiments.” The 144th Illinois Infantry Regiment served as guards for the Alton Prison, where Confederate Prisoners of War were held. The Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board (ISHRAB) is pleased to announce the 2019 Historical Records Preservation Grant program. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to Illinois historical records repos- itories with funds provided by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). This is the 10th year the ISHRAB has awarded these grants. Grants will be awarded to institutions that demonstrate need, both financially and programmatically, and that show commitment to developing and/or implementing projects that will lead to enhanced online access. These projects may include creating online finding aids; digitizing records and placing the digital content online; making an inventory of records; properly storing the records with the goal of preparing them for future online access; or placing information about the records on a blog, wiki page or Facebook. Eligible institutions may be public or private. Although any size institution may apply, preference will be given to those with archival holdings of 500 cubic feet or less and/or two or fewer professional staff. The ISHRAB began accepting grant proposals on January 28, 2019, with the deadline for submission of March 15. Grant award winners will be announced in May.
