For God Alone My Soul in Silence Waits BY FR. JAMES, DEAN INTERIM I observed those who could not keep the si- lence. They would move around from per- son to person whisper- ing about this or that. Next they became very busy in the kitchen anticipating every need, looking for things to do. It was as if the silence were pur- suing them and they could not abide its dogged presence. Psalm 62 uses as its antiphon this phrase, “For God alone my soul in si- lence waits.” It is the fundamental confession of the author. God is found in the silence. It was my privilege last week to be on a silent retreat. Oh, there were conference times, there was a daily eucharist, but 21 hours a day were lived in silence. What a blessed privilege. Just the availability of silence was restful, apart from the possibility of much rest. Even my tinnitus receded. No need to communicate with others, no expectation of availability, we enjoyed the complete freedom to order our own time. It is possible, of course, to so fill the silent hours with study and reading and bicycle-riding that there is still no discovery of God, but for me that was not the case. Plentiful food, ready rest, strenu- ous exercise and hours to read and study and pray lead to a different level of awareness of the love of God. One would think that shy of ver- bal communication, not much takes place, but I was impressed this week about how much I learned of others and from others who were continu- ously being silent. If it is possible for me to learn about the character of an- other human being, if I can experience love from another, or suspicion or dis- trust all in the silence, how much can I learn of God in that same silence. One of the things that I have learned to do through the years is to read body language, and one of the principles of communication learned through this venture is that 93% of all communication is non-verbal. Amaz- ing. Then how well God can know us, omniscience aside. Whether we speak to God or not, God knows us. Could it be that we too can know God in the silence? That is my experi- ence. It is possible, as millions through the centuries have testified, that God speaks, God calls, God addresses us in our sinfulness, in our best moments, in the mundane and unremarkable de- tails of living life in God’s presence. Summer is upon us and at least in our expectation we will have more lei- sure time. Time on warm evenings, time on vacation, time on quiet pic- nics. Explore the possibility of a few hours of silence and leave some of it for communing with God. Psalm 62 may be for you, as it is for me, a pro- vocative way to begin to explore the possibilities. Pembroke Hill School honoredNancy Cavanaugh by awarding hera place in the Faculty and Staff Hallof Fame.

Nancy began her career with Pem-broke Hill in 1976 while teaching atSunset Hill School in the second gradeas a long term substitute.

She then taught sixth grade andin 1980 returned to the second grade

Nancy Cavanaugh receives awarduntil retirement in 1996. Since thenshe has substituted extensively in theWornall Campus.

Other recipients this year wereCarol Robb and Ashe Jones. Theaward was presented at the All-Alumni Awards Luncheon on Satur-day, May 17.

At that same luncheon, theAlumni Service Award was given toMimi Steinhaus, daughter of Margeand Bill Dietrich, and Dick Woods, Jr.,son of the late Dick Woods. James M.Kemper was awarded the Distin-guished Alumni Award.

You may not have noticed, but ournursery is proud to host a collection ofart on loan from an incredibly talentedgroup of artists - some of them mightbe your own children!

It is common knowl-edge that children love todraw and color. While in-troducing our young onesto the wonderful world ofart, we must remember themost important thing aboutit is the process, and not theproduct. Children’s art inits purest form is child-cen-tered, as opposed toteacher-directed.

Perhaps the best thingwe can do for our childrenwhen it comes to art is to givethem the freedom to exploretheir creativity with the useof various media, such as wa-ter colors, pastels, tempera,chalk, markers, crayonsalong with various papersand instruments.

Brushes, sponges, fin-gers are great tools; but have

For many visitors, it is hospitalitythat invites them into spiritual fellow-ship. Holy Hands is a group at theCathedral that has provided hospital-ity in many ways: through the offer-ing of coffee hours following worship,through the providing of food forthose who suffer from loss or illness,and through the serving of meals andreceptions for ordinations, weddingsand funerals, to name a few.

Genuine caring is obvious in a wor-shipful community. It is a ministry towhich many are called.

We will be updating and revisingour Holy Hands Hospitality in orderto better extend and expand our wel-coming love for one another and forour guests.

Hospitality - Reaching Outin the Name of Christ

On Tuesday, June 10, the first meeting of The AngelusSmall Group was held. Gathered around the conference roomtable were ten parishioners filled with excitement and ideasfor this promising new group.

Among the issues dis-cussed were the history of ourCathedral’s newsletter, themeaning behind its name, andways in which The Angeluscould be improved. Opinionsand suggestions were as di-verse and constructive as thegroup members themselves.

As we became acquaintedwith each other we learned ofthe experience and gifts eachof the members bring to thegroup. We have a fair assort-ment of English and Journal-ism majors, as well as those with years of experience in news-letter writing and editing and a couple of very talented pho-tographers.

In the months to come, the impact of the group will besignificant. Stories about parish events, families, small groups

The Angelus Small Group Meets for the First Timeand so many other issues will be featured in these very pages.The content of the newsletter will not be drastically changed,rather it will be enhanced in an effort to bring parishioners

closer as we learn more aboutour Cathedral and the peoplewith whom we worship weekafter week.

As always, The Angeluswill continue to publish sto-ries from parishioners, be-longing to The Angelus SmallGroup will never be a require-ment! However, anyonewishing to join this group iswelcome, meetings are heldthe second Tuesday of everymonth at 7:00 p.m.

The possibilities are endlessas we work towards making

our parish newsletter the best it can be. Perhaps you have anidea for a story that could be covered, let us know and wewill make every effort to make it happen.

On Friday the 13th, Itook a good friend toJardine’s on Main Streetfor dinner and music.We went to hear IdaMcBeth sing.For those of you that

have not had the plea-sure, Jardine’s (French for Garden andpronounced with a soft “J,” although inKansas City we say, Jar-Dean, as in“someone who’s in charge of a cathe-dral full of Mason jars”) is a cozy littlebistro dedicated to live music. In fact,the area for performers toset up is larger than theirkitchen (although notlarger than their bar).

To get a table up closeto the music, you have tospend $20.00 per person,which if you want to beable to drive home, meansbuying food. We hadbaked brie, bruchetta, anda bottle of wine.

We sat down at about8:30, just in time for thesecond set of the evening. The band—keyboards, drums, base, and guitar—took the stage and played a couple ofnice tunes to warm up the room for Ida.Then she appeared, rising from thebooth next to the band where she hadbeen concealed.

Ida McBeth has some fairly seriousstage presence. As she took the five stepsfrom her booth to the stool waiting forher, the band went from a groovy littleskipping stone to the rock upon whicha dragon sits. She took control of thosefour guys with a snap of her wrist andthey were off. Then she started to sing.

If I were a music reviewer I wouldhave remembered some of what theyplayed, at least the tunes that I recog-nized. Yet just days later I can remem-ber only the molten stream of her voiceerupting from the stage and rising fastaround the legs of our bistro chairs.

Jardine’s is a great place to hear livemusic, but not everyone goes there tolisten. Like I said, they have a big bar.The place was noisy, and if my friendand I hadn’t been sitting just one tableback from the musicians it might have

been hard to hear clearly. Lots of folkstalked over the quiet tunes, but hey, thisis a jazz club right? If I wanted silent at-tentiveness I would have gone to aclassical concert. An hour later they fin-ished up the set and as Ida left the stagethe band broke into the swingingest ren-dition of The Flintstones I have everheard, as if Ida’s residual presence weredriving them into their smoke breakwith a fury.

All of this made for a nice evening,but apparently Ida had been waiting forthe last set of the evening. Just before

10:00 rolled around, aparty of eight crowdedaround the table in frontof my friend and I, nearlyspilling onto the stage.After the band warmedus up again and Ida cameback out of the booth,these folks were identi-fied as her family. Maybeit was having her familythere that night, but shewas inspired during thatlast set. By request she

did a gospel tune called Sweet Inspira-tion and I swear that her voice bore ahole straight through my skull andgrabbed my brain, forcing my feet to tapmadly and my hands to clap along.

Nobody was talking over her any-more, and when she finished there wasonly a low rumble from the bar as sheintroduced the next tune. Again, I wishI could remember what it was called.What I do remember is that she intro-duced it by telling us that shehad a twenty-three year oldson who had brought her thissong. She also told us that herson was autistic, and that attwenty-three he had only justlearned how to talk.

The opening lines of this song werejust her: no drums, no bass, no key-board. And when she paused at the endof a line, whether because her voice re-ally broke or because she wanted to tellus how sad it all was, the place wasquiet. It would have been unnervinghad I thought about it at the time, awhole boisterous jazz club and barstricken silent by this one woman’s pas-

sion-laced voice. I’ll admit it: there wheretears in my eyes when she finished.

We clapped and we cheered, but theroom was disquiet. We had all come outfor a good time, to share drinks and food,to chat, to celebrate the weekend and thebeautiful day. Then this woman hadtaken us all somewhere else, somewherewe hadn’t planned on going and werejust a bit nervous about having been.

Into this uncomfortable atmosphereIda McBeth stood up and proclaimed,“I feel like singin’ the blues.” And justlike that she had us back again. She andthe band just tore into this classic bluestune about a woman who loves her manbut is fed up with his cheatin’ ways. Andwhile it could have been cliché comingfrom some singers, from Ida it was rawand furious passion, a deadly stream ofinvective skewering all who had evertaken love for granted or treated theirlover as less than they deserved.

Again, I’ll admit it: I hid. I duckeddown in my seat so that the lady in frontof me blocked my view. I couldn’t lookIda in the eye! I was sure I hadn’t beentreatin’ my baby bad, I was pretty sure Ididn’t even have a baby to treat bad inthe first place, but I felt guilty by asso-ciation. I wanted to get up and do nicethings for all the women in the place,open doors, or buy drinks, or something!

It says in my New Interpreter’sBible Commentary that the Song ofSongs (aka the Song of Solomon, al-though he didn’t write it) has as its clos-est modern musical equivelent theAmerican Blues, with their first person,

unashamed address of mattersintimate and personal. Theverse quoted above has beenon my mind of late mostly be-cause it has been wedding sea-son and this is the last line of apopular pick for a reading at

weddings. I have to smile at the ironywhen a bride chooses this passage be-cause it says love in it while failing tonotice the darker suggestions about thenature of love.

The Song of Songs is one of only twobooks in the Bible that never mentionGod (Esther being the other) and it isthe only book of the Bible with apredominantley female voice. And what

a female voice it is! She speaks franklyof love and desire and longing. It is notall sweet love either, as seperations ofclass and ethnicity bar the lovers fromeach other. Over the course of their po-etry, she and her lover grow togetherand consumate their love, and then shespeak the line written above.

The seal she demands of her loveris a promise, often in the form of a seal-ring, given between lovers as a pledgeof their faithfulness. Yet in the very lastverse of the Song of Songs she will hurryher lover away from their tryst in thegarden, and we are left unknowing.Were they interupted? Did they ever getback together? Could they overcome thedifficulties in their way and make theirlove a lasting one?

“...for love is strong as death, pas-sion fierce as the grave.” This is where Ifind the sharp edge of truth between IdaMcBeth and the Song of Songs. Not inthe seal/pledge of love, but in the as-sertion that if there is anything in ourlives that might be stronger than thedeath we all live with, then that thing islove. Not Cinderella and Prince Charm-ing love, not Martha Stewart Weddingslove, but love of a strength to defy thepermanence of death, love that can risefrom the grave.

If there is anything in our livesstronger than death, then it can only bea love that flashes fire and rages flame,and when sung through a microphonewith a four piece jazz band can arrestthe conversation of a bistro full of happypartiers and tell them how it feels tohave a twenty-three year old autisticson, or to love someone who hurts youin return. That is true love.

The General Synod of the ScottishEpiscopal Church (SEC), meeting inEdinburgh this June made an historicdecision by voting to accept womenbishops and ending centuries of tradi-tion. The decision on June 12 could leadthe way to give Scotland the first femalebishops in the UK.

Churches throughout Scotland hadthe opportunity to spend a year discuss-ing the issue further in their own dio-ceses. The motion required two-thirdsmajority for it to be passed. Out of 153votes cast, 124 voted in favor, includingall seven bishops of the SEC.

At present, only the Anglican/Epis-copal Churches of the USA, Canada andNew Zealand have elected women asbishops, although the Anglican Churchin Ireland has voted to allow womenbishops but has yet to appoint one.

After 70 years of formal discussionand debate in the Anglican Commun-ion, the General Synod of the Church ofEngland voted to open the priesthoodto women, five years after women werefirst ordained to the diaconate. Cur-rently, one in five Church of Englandpriests is female.

The first women priests in the An-glican Communion were ordained inHong Kong in 1944. During the 1960sand 70s there was a movement in manycountries across the world towards theordination of women as priests. In 1974there was an irregular ordination of 11women in the United States, and theEpiscopal Church in the US authorisedwomen’s priestly ordination two yearslater. In 1993 and 1994 the ScottishSynod agreed to allow women to be or-dained as priests and the first ordina-tions took place in December 1994.

Responding to today’s decision, theMost Rev. Bruce Cameron, Primus of theScottish Episcopal Church, said, “Thedecision is a momentous one. For someit will be received with great joy, for oth-ers pain, but I know that most ofus will want to be members of the samefamily in the Episcopal Church. Wemust seek to be sensitive to all peoplein our church.”

Professor David Atkinson, laymember of the Diocese of Edinburgh,

Scottish Episcopal Church toOrdain Women Bishops

spoke in favour of the motion, saying,“Jesus took a common sense approachto what would be seen by others as verydifficult questions. We need to look atwhat the purpose of our church is tomission and ministry. Ordination ofwomen to the priesthood makes avail-able to the Church the talents of a groupof committed and skilled Christians.”

He admitted that issues such asthese always have upsides and down-sides. He added, “I believe that com-mon sense, fairness, inclusively of tal-ented Christians and our ability to beeffective in our ministry and mission,which needs to be seen as in touch withand understanding of society, dictatesthat we must pass this change to ourcanons.”

The Rev. Ruth Edwards, Diocese ofAberdeen and Orkney, also supportedthe motion saying that it follows on fromthe ordination of women to thediaconate and the presbyterate. “Itseems very strange to fix on them astained glass ceiling,” she said. “It willhelp our ecumenical work much moreif God can call men and women equallyto all levels within the church...It isabout faithfulness to the truth.”

David Fuller, a member of the Dio-cese of Argyll and the Isles, strongly re-jected the motion and asked for moredebate. “We live in times of greatchange,” he said. “No one before us hashad to live in such a volatile world...butthere is an understanding trend towardsunity. We should try to steer clear ofmaking serious doctrinal mistakes.”

The Rev. Canon John Riches fromthe Diocese of Glasgow and Gallowayspoke briefly about his experience as amember of the International AnglicanOrthodox Dialogue. He said that theOld Catholics and Orthodox in EasternEurope issued a joint statement sayingthat they could find no reason whywomen should not be ordained. “Thequestion really is, ‘whatever decision ismade will it cause a division?’” he said.“It would be discrimination if, in theabsence of valid theological reasons, wechose not to support the motion.”

When Gene Wattenberg partici-pated in an auction for a local public ra-dio station and bid on and won the ser-vices of the KC Prime DanceBand, he realized that hewould need a venue.

He posed this questionto Father Ben Newland,who suggested “Why not doa benefit for the Kansas CityCommunity Kitchen?” Andso began the idea for the firstEvening of Elegance.

Held in Haden Hall onSaturday, May 31, 2003 theEvening of Elegance drewapproximately 80 people toa night of dinner and dancing.

Upon arrival, guests mingled andmixed to the sounds of Jack McHenry’s“Elegant Piano Stylings” while theydrank champagne cocktails and wineand sampled an array of hors d’oeuvresprepared by the Culinary CornerstonesClass, a division of the Kansas CityCommunity Kitchen.

The 11 students of the culinary pro-gram prepared a rich dinner of ChickenMarsala, Rice Pilaf, Mixed Greens Saladand Asparagus Vinaigrette. By the timethe guests begantheir dessert ofcheesecake, KCPrime DanceBand had takenthe stage.

Exciting andstylish, the bandtook over the restof the night toround off the el-egant meal with high energy entertain-ment. Many standard andwell-loved tunes pulled people out oftheir chairs and onto the dance floor.Song after song, guestssang along and swayed;even the Cornerstonesstudents doffed theirchefs’ hats and joinedthe fun - a well-de-served celebration oftheir hard work and cu-linary talents.

Wattenberg and hiswife Deborah collabo-rated with Jane Tally,

Director of the KCCK, and with ChefDave Nichols and Elizabeth Tally of theCulinary Cornerstones Class to prepare

this stellar event. With thehelp of several other parish-ioners, they were able toblend all their efforts - ar-ranging the additional en-tertainment, selling ticketson Sundays, and, thanks tothe students, serving the el-egant meal itself - into an in-credibly successful event.

Weeks of preparationand diligent promotion re-sulted in over 80 tickets sold- this yielded

over $1,500 in funds raisedto benefit both the Commu-nity Kitchen and the Culi-nary Cornerstones Class.

“The event was abso-lutely a success; I haveheard nothing but raves,”Jane Tally said. “The stu-dents themselves had awonderful time and I thinkthey prepared a very nicemeal. It’s great for them to see peoplereally enjoying something they pre-

pared.”The Culinary

Benefit Event Provides Elegant EntertainmentKC Prime Dance Band with the KCCommunity Kitchen could be the startof an annual fundraising event. Thereare plans to hold a similar event in thespring of next year in hopes that thenumber of attendants can be increased.

More parishioners could join thefun, more Culinary Cornerstones stu-dents could realize their successes, andmore funds could be contributed to thesuccesses of the KCCK. A benefit eventsuch as the Evening of Elegance can bea great benefit to everyone involved.

Kansas City CommunityKitchen is most grateful for the re-sponse to need in the month of May.

Through your generosity andtwo local corporate foundationgrants, nearly $45,000 dollars wereraised in one month!

Hunger in this communitycontinues to escalate. Our totalnumber of meals daily has in-creased 125 per day in the last threemonths. That is a total of 30,000meals a year!

Currently the Kitchen servesbetween 500-600 meals daily. Alsothe number of students attendingCulinary Cornerstones classes hastripled in the last year. Your assis-tance and prayers have made itpossible. Again, we are blessed thatyou were so generous in support-ing this special ministry.

A special thanks goes to GeneWattenberg and Culinary Corner-stones students for an “Evening ofElegance.” This lovely eveningraised about $1,500 for KCCK.

If you are divorced or are close to someone who is, pleasetake note of this date and time: Monday, July 14, 6:30 to8:00 p.m. Those men and women interested in the orga-nization of a divorce support group will gather to makesuggestions and plan meetings. The purpose of thisgroup is to help divorced people move ahead spiritu-ally and positively with encouragement and support.Those attending will work together to discern God’sgrace in the midst of change. Some of the topics to bediscussed in subsequent meetings include mutual sup-port in resources, self-care, self-image, loneliness andsolitude, rebuilding families, and issues such as finances,grief, loss, children, and forgiveness. Most Episcopalians are familiar withthe Book of Common Prayer. It has afew pages near the middle of the bookthat we use on Sundays, with someother stuff before and after it that youhave to leaf through to get to the Sun-day Eucharist service. Right? Hopefully, you don’t see the PrayerBook that way. The Book of CommonPrayer has been in use in the Anglicanworld for several centuries. It has beenrevised many times, but it has alwaysbeen one of the most reliable and con-stant forms of our Christian expression. Many books and articles have beenwritten about the history, traditions andtheology of the Book of Common Prayer(the “BCP”). Let us rediscover togetheranother part of the Prayer Book as wefocus on one of the other services thatwe use at Grace and Holy Trinity Ca-thedral: the Daily Office. The Daily Office actually consists offour different services: Morning, Prayer,Noonday, Evening Prayer andCompline; and many Episcopalchurches use one or more of them dur-ing the week. The Cathedral uses Morn-ing Prayer at 12:05 p.m. on weekdays.We use Morning Prayer instead ofNoonday because it is our first serviceof the day and is more comprehensive.

On Wednesdays we have a Holy Eu-charist service instead of MorningPrayer. During Lent, we also haveMorning Prayer earlier in the day andEvening Prayer.

The Morning Prayer service is simpleand elegant. We begin on page 80 of theBCP with a short statement of God’sglory and a Psalm. After that come tworeadings from the Bible that are read bylay readers with Canticles for each les-son read by everyone. We finish with ashort meditation on the lessons, theApostle’s Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, in-tercessions, a Collect and a blessing. Those who havetaken part in the DailyOffice have experiencedthe quiet, contemplativenature of the service. Itcan be a welcome breakin the middle of a busyday, a way to forgetabout daily life for 30minutes and bring your-self to God. If you can’t make it tothe Cathedral at noon,you can always worshipon your own. You don’teven need a priest — anyone can be theofficiant.

If you wish to worship with theDaily Office on your own, or with yourfamily or wherever you happen to be,all you have to do is find out which read-ings to use. These are listed in the DailyOffice lectionary, which begins on page936. We are currently in Year One, souse the left-hand pages. Just look up theweek you need; for example, the weekthat starts on July 6 is Proper 9 on page

Discovering the Daily Office, Worshiping Together974. Two Psalms are listed, followed byan Old Testament reading, an epistleand Gospel reading. A table on page 144lists suggested Canticles. You can alsogo to www.satucket.com/lectionary/which does all this work for you. Evening Prayer is similar to MorningPrayer. Noonday and Compline, whichis intended for the end of the day, areshorter and you can use them for your

private prayer in just afew minutes. The BCPalso has daily devotions(page 136+) that are in-tended for individualsand families to use athome. Everyone is welcometo join in the Daily Of-fice at the Cathedral. Wemeet in the chapelshortly after noon. Ifyou prefer to use theDaily Office as a modelfor private prayer, you

can think of yourself as one part of agreat choir that is worshiping God in thesame way and at the same time. Take some time to read through theservices of the Daily Office. Not onlywill you discover the great depth andtradition of the Book of CommonPrayer, but you will also see how theDaily Office can help keep God in thecenter of your life and heart all week,not just on Sundays.
