“FASTING 101” with Dr. Akilah El, Sunday, September 23, 2:00-4:00 pm. Fasting is the process of not eating food for a specific period of time. People fast for a variety of reasons. Some religions encourage their mem-bers to fast in certain circumstances. Some health professionals believe that a short-term fast can help clear the body of toxins that build up during the processes of digestion. Others use modified fasts as a way of identifying whether a person has sensitivities to certain foods. This class will teach you the do’s and don’ts of fasting. Learn the benefits of fasting, different fasting methods, and how to use it to improve your health. Dr. Akilah will also discuss the pros and cons of fasting for weight loss. Free.

“E2 Club” with Dawn Jameson, Saturday, September 29, 11:00-12:00 pm. Dawn Jameson proposes a new concept, “Educated Eating” (E2). Feeling overworked, overwhelmed, overweight and confused about what to eat? Bombarded daily with information about what, when, where, why, and how much to eat? Well, let’s talk about it in the Educated Eating Club. It is Jameson’s belief that if you educate yourself, i.e. understand the logic behind your eating, and begin to raise your awareness, you can begin to live a healthier, more mindful lifestyle and reduce symptoms associated with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. She takes one major piece of the nutritional puzzle at a time and breaks it down into manageable, bite-size, easily understood portions. Start today — Change Your Eating, Change Your Life! Free.

Calendar From Your General Manager

Over the last 15 months, I have talked to many mem-bers, shoppers, and staff

about Sevananda and the future of the Co-op. Beginning this month, I will start laying out a vision for Se-vananda that includes many of the ideas that we have talked about. As part of our cooperative goals, we should be seeking to provide all of Sevananda’s benefits to even more metro Atlanta residents.

Many members have asked about having a second store and the ideas for where it should be. Those sug-gested locations include southwest Atlanta, the east side outside the Perimeter, and the north Atlanta/Sandy Springs area. There were other areas mentioned too, but these three have the largest number of current members outside a five-mile radius of our current store. I have told several members that to be able to open a new store in an area, we would need to have at least 600 committed members in that imme-diate area to be the base of support for that store. This number would give a store in that area a solid base upon which to build a clientele and be profitable.

The Atlanta Metro area provides a large enough financial base to sup-port several more Natural Foods stores than are currently operating here. The competition knows that and has attempted to cherry-pick the most upscale areas. They gener-ally have no real interest in locating in the food deserts around Atlanta. A food desert is an area where there are no real providers of healthy food at reasonable prices for that neigh-borhood.

Sevananda is the source for healthy food in our community, and we pro-vide it at the lowest possible prices, giving our members and commu-nity the overall best value. Our profits are used to offer and main-tain education classes, cooking classes, and social events in addi-tion to being that source of food.

However, before we make the big investment in the future with an-other store, our current location

needs some updating and modern-izing. With more than 6 years left on our current lease, the time is right to do a small remodel.

The term small is relative, of course. The work we need could require around $500,000 to complete. This remodel would bring us energy savings by making us more green, give us room to add more products for greater selection, and improve our abilities to provide services. It would also give us the opportunity to fully utilize our basement with a new kitchen, walk-in coolers, and storage.

In addition, a larger and fully self-serve Hot Bar and Salad Bar, along with a full Juice and Smoothie Bar, Coffee Bar, and Sandwich/Sub Station would increase sales and customer draw. Frozen Food, Bulk, and Dairy/Perishables would also increase in size. With all the great products available in these de-partments, adding more space for existing products and for increas-ing our selection would allow us to better serve our members and cus-tomers.

To accomplish this remodel, we ob-viously would have to raise money. One way would be to ask members to invest in their business through short to mid-term loans with com-petitive interest rates. Another way would be to modify our discount structure so that, in the short term, money currently being paid out in the form of discounts could be put to use paying for the remodel and keeping financing costs lower. The Patronage Dividend program would remain intact so that as we increase profitability, members would re-ceive patronage dividends based on their purchases. Those that invest financially in the Co-op for the re-model could receive both interest payments on their loans and pa-tronage dividends on the store’s profits as they are realized.

All of this internal financing would remove the need for large bank fi-nance involvement and keep the money in the local community, that of Sevananda’s members. It would

cement the loyalty of members and encourage them get more involved in bringing even more members to the Co-op.

I believe that our membership is not only willing but anxious for Sevananda to grow into a greater influence in the Atlanta commu-nity and in Georgia's sustainability. Although we are a cooperative, we still have to be better than our cor-porate competition to win over the hearts and minds of consumers in the metro area that seek the best value for their dollars when buying natural and organic foods for their families. Sevananda must take full advantage of that opportunity.

Tom has served as Sevananda’s General Manager since April 2011. He can be reached at [email protected].

SCHOOL OF COMMONHEALTHNourish Thy Body, Mind and Spirit

Now that summer fun has of-ficially come to an end, the School of CommonHealth is

now back in session! It’s time to get back to thinking about those life-style changes you put off because of the abundance of goodness that happens in the summer — and be-cause it was too hot to think about anything besides how to keep cool and hydrated. Now that the tem-peratures have begun to wane, it’s the perfect time to begin to recreate yourself for the better. The School of CommonHealth will be offering many exciting classes to help you achieve any goals that you have.

Our “What’s Cooking?” class with Chef Asata Reid will start back up on

It’s Back to School at Sevananda!by Tasha Tavaras, Arts & Education Coordinator

the second Saturday in September, offering cooking demonstrations that will teach you how incorporate healing foods into your daily meals. Chef Joi Bostic continues her Get Raw with Joi: Transition to Raw Foods Made Easy class, featuring easy and quick recipes to help you transition into a living foods-based diet.

Also returning is Christine Arin-ze’s Reflexology class, helping you to heal areas of the body using the modality of reflexology. Sonali Sad-equee will be joining us to teach a gluten-free cooking class later on this year. She will offer delicious, quick recipes for those that want to exclude gluten from their diets.

We also have some new faces that will be joining us this session. Dr. Akilah El will be presenting Fasting 101 in September, teaching the do’s and don’ts, benefits and drawbacks of fasting. She will be returning in October to teach Food Pharmacy, helping you heal your body using food as medicine. Neith Ma’at will join us to teach Detailing Your Body Through Detox, to help you re-structure your body using proper detox methods. We also have Dawn Jameson who will begin leading the E2 Club, Educated Eating. Dawn wants to raise awareness about the food we are putting into our bodies and how we can curb the symptoms of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity and live a

healthier and happier lifestyle.

This is just the beginning of what the School of CommonHealth will be offering throughout the year and into 2013. Remember to check the class listings and stop by our web-site, sevananda.coop, for details on all upcoming classes. We hope you will join us for a year filled with learning and self change.

SCHOOL OF COMMONHEALTHNourish Thy Body, Mind and Spirit

If you were told that reducing the amount of poor quality (or even good quality) carbohydrates

you eat could reduce – and maybe even eliminate – obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart dis-ease . . . would you want to know the secret?

The reason it’s a secret is that people just aren’t making the connection between obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and carbohydrates. As Dr. Christopher Greene D.C. states, “We must wake up from our slumber, and take a hard look at how our world of food has changed!”

The information is out there, but it is overwhelming, sometimes very technical, and hidden among other problems so that it just doesn’t stand out.

I have started a grassroots move-ment: groups of people coming together on a regular basis to talk about food and how it affects their lives. The goal is for the average con-sumer to understand the available information and apply it to everyday living. We are the best monitors of our health, not our doctors, nurses, or anyone else. We must take per-sonal responsibility for our health and retrain ourselves on how we eat. Why? The world of food has changed, technology is abundant, our physical activity levels have de-creased, and our medical technology is more reactive than proactive.

I challenge you to take control of your life and honor what I call “your Temple of Health.” My belief is that each person has been blessed with a magnificent vessel and has been

by Dawn Jameson, School of CommonHealth instructor

assigned the responsibility and gift of maintaining that vessel. As a Nutritional Awareness Consul-tant (NAC), I combine my love for great-tasting, healthy food with my extensive knowledge of nutrition and health to educate others.

My many years of personal strug-gles with weight, dental, and other health challenges led me to set out on this path. After successfully losing 30 pounds and keeping it off on a low-carbohydrate lifestyle plan, I now serve as a beacon of hope for others. Having witnessed the devastating consequences of poor health choices among family and friends, based on confusing nutrition and health information, I have made it my mission to become a spark for change.

I recognized the need for a new

addition to the structure of individ-uals providing nutritional guidance (dieticians and nutritionists) – thus the creation of my position as a Nutritional Awareness Consultant (NAC). As such, I serve as an inde-pendent nutritional health advocate with no financial ties to any com-pany. My vision includes Educated Eating (E2) Clubs in communities throughout the world, starting right here at Sevananda’s School of Com-monhealth.

Dawn Ann Jameson is a Nutritional Awareness Consultant (NAC) and has been active in the nutrition, fit-ness and health arena for over 35 years. She is the author of Educated Eating, which addresses carbohy-drates and insulin as a major link between the epidemic levels of obe-sity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

SCHOOL OF COMMONHEALTHNourish Thy Body, Mind and Spirit

It’s September. School’s back in session. Football and soccer practice have started. The days

are long, even if they appear to be getting shorter, and you still have to get good, healthy, and delicious food into those little folks you’re raising.

What’s a full-time employed parent/chauffeur/chef/nurse/boo-boo kisser to do?

Join me for the next “What’s Cook-ing?” class where we’ll cover a few things:

- Create balanced kid-friendly meals that are done in 20 minutes or less;

What’s Cooking?

Good Food, Fast!by Chef Asata Reid

- Showcase some of all-natural snacks and goodies to help you combat a world inundated with marketing crap “food” toward kids;

- Learn how to pack healthier snacks for you and your family.

Also pick up a couple of tips on how to deal with your PICKYEATER, how to end MEALTIME BATTLES and get your family to share a meal with GRATITUDE, and ways to get your kids and teens involved in healthy eating and cooking.

These are real life solutions from a real mom/chef, not some theo-retical stuff from those parenting books! This is a class that will bene-fit every parent/guardian interested

in preparing healthy and delicious meals, without taking a lot of time from your already booked sched-ules.

Be sure to bring your personal chal-lenges on the path to healthy eating so we can get real life solutions on the table, along with a nice sam-pling of the delicious meals we’ll be whipping up.

You and your family can enjoy de-licious and nutritious food, that’s fast, easy and inspiring. Release the Dinner Drama and join me for “What’s Cooking?” on Saturday, September 8, at noon in the Educa-tion Room.

Chef, journalist, and mother Asata Reid has been a Sevananda Member

since 2006. She founded the com-pany Life Chef LLC to help people make healthy eating a part of their lifestyle. E2 ClubFeeling overworked, overwhelmed, overweight and confused about what to eat? Bombarded daily with information about what, when, where, why, and how much to eat? Well let’s talk it in Educated Eating (E2) Club. Dawn Jameson proposes a new concept, “Educated Eating”. It is her belief, that if you educate yourself, i.e. understand the logic behind your eating, and begin to raise your awareness, you can begin to live a healthier, more mindful, lifestyle, and reduce symptoms associated with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. She takes one major piece of the nutritional puzzle and breaks it down into manageable, bite size, easily understood portions. Start today, “Change Your Eating, Change Your Life!” Free.

Joi Bostic was destined to be involved with food. As a child she studied under her father who was a chef. Although she never took serious most of what he said, she realized as she got older that he what he said was true. Joi grew up cooking. She would experiment with different avor combinations and discover some amazing dishes. However, she could never quite replicate them because she would not write them down. After watching so much preventable illness come into her family, Joi made the decision in 1993 to convert to vegetarianism.

Membership & Cooperatives

Sevananda has been in exis-tence for nearly 40 years. It was part of a wave of coopera-

tives that started in the 1960s and ‘70s for all the right reasons. The so-called hippie culture sought al-ternative, naturally-based lifestyles that were contrary to the corporate monopolies of the day. Most of the co-ops born fifty or sixty years ago focused primarily on “health food.” The Aquarian Age was showing us that much more could be accom-plished by doing it cooperatively.

Although there are approximately 160 food co-ops in the U.S. today, many of those that started 40 or 50 years ago are no longer functional for a variety of reasons – chang-ing demographics, unwillingness to change, competition from larger one-stop-shop stores such as Whole Foods, as well as from online stores.

The market – i.e. people – are be-coming more aware of their ability to be the masters of their own health, and individuals like Dr. Oz are creating a mushroom cloud of self-empowerment regarding the use of naturally produced supple-ments. Health care insurance is still not affordable to many, sooooo…the most logical thing to do is take care of self from a preventative stand-point.

Members of the Sevananda Board went to the annually-held Consumer Cooperative Management Associa-tion conference in Philadelphia this past June. The whole purpose of the three-day event was to enlighten the attendees (board directors and managers from co-ops around the country) about ways to strengthen our respective co-ops and the ties that we have to one another, finan-cially, socially, and politically. I bring this up because it was there that I watched a movie that gave a historical perspective of co-ops in this country.

I was quite surprised to find out that the first wave of the coopera-tive movement actually happened in the late 1920s and early ’30s. There were co-ops for a large assortment of businesses, not just food-related. These co-ops were formed during the Great Depression, so there was a necessary urgency which enabled most of them to do quite well up until the beginning of America’s

Still Thrivingby Rahn Stevens, Wellness Department Manager

involvement in WWII. The labor needed to fuel the co-ops was cir-cumvented when the need for war machinery took priority.

There were also individuals in high places who saw that the cooperative movement was too powerful and potentially threatening to the status quo. These individuals did what they could politically to weaken the movement, but what put the pro-verbial nail in the coffin took place during the 1950s. It was during this time when certain politicians at-tempted to associate Cooperation with Communism. This was also when the bigger and better grocery stores and shopping centers (and eventually malls), with the help of an unprecedented marketing and advertising campaign, began steer-ing people away from “mom and pop” businesses.

Sevananda was a part of the second wave of co-ops, and now, within the last five years or so, a third wave of co-ops is forming. Coopera-tion makes the most sense. As the origi-nal mode of trade and commerce, it is the very foundation of social, political and economic re-ality. As I learned through watching that film, our pres-ent-day economic climate will only make co-ops like Se-vananda thrive, just like a beautiful lotus flower that is rooted in mud.

When September arrives I start thinking about one of my favorite fruits – the

pomegranate (Punica granatum). This delicious fruit is in season in North America from September through February and is chock full of incredible health benefits.

Pomegranates have a symbolic his-tory as rich as their geographic history. The pomegranate became one of the first cultivated fruits over 4,000 years ago. It is native from Iran to the Himalayas in northern India, and has been cultivated and naturalized over the whole Med-iterranean region since ancient times. The Romans gave it its name, which in Latin literally means “seed apple,” and then planted the sturdy seedlings throughout their empire. Spanish settlers introduced the tree

PomegranateThe Healthful Fruit!

by Pam Gould

to California in 1769.

This unique-looking fruit has held legendary powers for countless centuries. Pomegranate fruit with its many seeds symbolizes fertility, prosperity, abundance and generos-ity, while the tree itself is associated with rebirth and renewal. Persians believe Eve actually ate a pome-granate in the Garden of Eden, not an apple. The ancient Egyptians buried their dead with pome-granates because they believed it offered eternal life. Greeks tradi-tionally break open a pomegranate at wedding celebrations and the Chinese eat candied pomegranate seeds for good luck. Pomegranates have over the centuries been the subject of poetry, Greek mythology, and paintings and frescoes depict-ing legendary heroes, gods and

goddesses dining on pomegran-ates.

This beloved, luscious fruit not only has an interesting history but its well-documented health benefits mean it is now more readily avail-able. It’s always good to remember that the first level of wellness is through the foods we eat, and pomegranate is one with tons of information on its medicinal value and positive effects on health. Ayurvedic practitioners of centu-ries ago considered pomegranate a health elixir that cured any number of ailments.

Pomegranate is a delicious fruit that can be eaten all on its own. The fruit has a hard, ruby-red shell that can be deeply scored several times vertically and then broken apart. Inside you will find clusters of juice sacs that can be lifted out of the rind and eaten intact. Scrape the seeds into a bowl and use them in salads or as a healthy snack. I promise they are so delicious they won’t last long! Pomegranate juice has become a commonplace sight on shelves, and I have most recently

seen it at the package store in the form of high-end liquor. This beau-tiful fruit is everywhere.

So what exactly are the health benefits, you ask? To start with, pomegranate is a good source of Vitamin C, Vitamin B5, Potassium and Vitamin K; but its real claim to fame is how loaded it is with antiox-idants. Studies have shown it to be effective against cardiovascular dis-ease, aging/neurological disorders, bacterial infections and inflamma-tion. It has been touted as one of the most important plants to include in your diet for longevity and anti-aging. The pomegranate may have more antioxidant power than cran-berry juice, red wine, blueberries, or green tea. It is simply a power-house of goodness that is delicious and nutritious. Now that’s good medicine!

Whether or you know it or not, if you eat food from the standard US commercial food supply, you are being contaminated by genetically engi-neered Frankenfoods – courtesy of Monsanto.

Monsanto, a chemical manufacturer, is one of six big biotech corporations controlling the U.S. food supply. Monsanto owns 90% of the world's seed supply. By patenting its genetically engi-neered plants, it controls all seeds produced by these plants. Monsanto also owns the chemicals used to grow the food, such as herbicides and pesticides. Monsanto is the same company that developed Agent Orange, rBGH, DDT, PCBs, and the list goes on.

Big food manufacturers, agrichemical com-panies, and their lobbyists want to defeat Proposition 37 in California, which requires food manufacturers to label all packages con-taining genetically engineered ingredients within 18 months. Monsanto has donated $4.2 million dollars to this effort to defeat your right to know. Kellogg's, owner of Kashi, has donated over $500,000. To view a current list of donors opposing Prop 37, visit the California's Secre-tary of State web site at www.sos.ca.gov. Go to “Political Reform, then “Campaign Finance.”

THIS MONTH’S TIDBITSThe United States has lost at least 200 seed companies in the last 13 years. Three multinational companies now control 75% of all corn and soy seed sales.

Certified organic operations increased by nearly 500 from 2010 to 2011, bring-ing the total number of certified organic farms and processing facilities in the United States to 17,673. Worldwide, there are 28,779 organic operators across 133 countries.

For the past three years, the USDA has been investing in local food systems. The Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass (KYF Compass) is a PDF and interactive map that brings together all of the USDA’s work related to local food systems. www.usda.gov/maps/maps/kyfcompassmap.htm.

You walk through the produce department and you see signs for local sweet yellow corn

and organic white. What do you buy? Local is more popular than ever, so much so that in 2011, over 85 percent of customers polled by the National Grocers Association said that they chose a grocery store based in part on whether it stocked food from regional producers.

Over 2,000 schools across the coun-try have developed farm-to-school initiatives to source from local farmers, ranchers, and food busi-nesses, and over 7,000 U.S. cities and towns host farmers’ markets. Folks want to know where their food comes from and who grows it, or perhaps they like knowing that

the money they spend is staying in their community and keeping the local economy alive and vibrant.

Organic is growing too! The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) recently announced the latest tally of certified organic operators in the United States and worldwide. Cer-tified organic operations increased by nearly 500 from 2010 to 2011, bringing the total number of certi-fied organic farms and processing facilities in the United States to 17,673. Worldwide, there are 28,779 organic operators across 133 coun-tries.

The growth is another indicator that the natural and organic food market will continue to outpace growth of

the total U.S. food market. And that the United States, claiming more than half of all organic operators in the world, will continue to lead in organic food production. All while reducing toxic pesticide use and ex-posure for farmers and consumers, creating healthier soil, and in many cases more nutritious food.

So what do you do? Buy both! When-ever possible choose local growers who grow organic so you can sup-port your local economy and do what’s best for your family and the planet.

This may pose a quandary some-times, but knowing how your food is grown will make the choice easier. Use the Environmental

Ask Dr. Patty ProduceQ: Dear Dr. Patty: It’s August, which means I have too much zucchini. Do you have any tips for using it before it goes bad? – Madden Simms

A: Dear Madden: Besides letting it grow to canoe size and cruising the river, you might consider freezing it, as that way it will keep up to eight months. It’s easy; just grate fresh zucchini and measure in two-cup allotments. Place in zip-closure freezer bags and freeze for up to eight months. To use: thaw unopened bag in cold water for about 45 minutes, then squeeze out excess water.

can — just as we have since 1974. And with

product sourcing policies more demanding

than anywhere else you could shop, we fully

guarantee the integrity and quality of what

we sell. We call that food integrity. And it’s

what we live by. To find out more about the

food integrity difference at Sevananda, just

ask any of our store team members or visit
