The Complete Attack and Saing Thro! Table$' Antonio Eleuteri
This article introduces a hopefull' useful;/
(ae aid+ all attack and savin( thro& tables
of the A)4) (ae condensed onto one
pa(e. Man' )un(eon Masters do not find thetables in the )un(eon Masters Guide )MG/
to be ver' user6friendl'* the' are spread over
three pa(es# and these pa(es are not even
conti(uous# resultin( in anno'in( pa(e
flippin(. The )un(eon Masters Screen helps
alleviate the situation# but even there# the
tables are on different panels. -urtherore#
searchin( on the tables a' be tie6
consuin(# and a' disrupt the flo& of the
action.
So# is there a &a' to have all the inforation
all in one place The ans&er is 'es# but soe2t&eakin(3 of the inforation in the )MG is
reuired. Precisel'# the ke' to the
copression lies in the 2To Hit Aror Class 3
THAC/ nuber. A roll of ?d@# plus odifier#
plus tar(et Aror Class ust eual or e>ceed
the THAC for an attack to be successful. The
THAC can be easil' read at the crossin( of
the ro& correspondin( to AC and the
colun of character level on the attack
atrices.
So# at least in principle# this &ould (ive a
siple ean to replace the attack atrices.
nfortunatel'# and contrar' to &hat happens
in the second edition A)4)# the attack
atrices ): 7:T ipleent a linear
pro(ression of THACs. "n fact# an attack
score i.e. ?d@ roll plus odifiers/ of @
corresponds a ran(e of ACs. Thin(s are further
coplicated b' the fact that# in soe
instances# a penalt' on the attack scores
ust be taken into account# nael'+ level
huans and halflin(s# creatures &ith ?6? hit
die# lo&6level thieves and a(ic6users.
The 2trick3 is then to take into account all of
these factors. This can be easil' done b'
reportin(# as a function of level,hit die# not
onl' the THAC# but also therangeof ACs hit
&ith an attack score of @ &hich " call the
2@ hit ran(e3/. The Coplete Attack and
Savin( Thro& table sho&s precisel' this
inforation. "ts use is siple+ &hen attackin(#sipl' use the THAC echanics# &ithout
usin( the table at all and notin( that thieves#
a(ic6users etc. ust subtract ? fro their
attack scores/. 5hen an attack score of @ is
obtained# there is no need to copare to the
THAC# since b' sipl' lookin( at the 2@ hit
ran(e3 one (ets the ACs hit. 5hen the attack
score is lar(er than @# each point of e>cess
be'ond @ hits ? point of AC be'ond the 2@
hit ran(e3.
Eample+ A ?th level fi(hter has a THAC of
?@. "f he rolls an attack score of @ he hits ACs6N to 6?. Since 6? is the a>iu AC
possible# attack scores be'ond @ al&a's hit
6?.
$esides the condensed attack atrices# there
&as plent' of space to include the savin(
thro& atrices. Thus# these have been placed
to the ri(ht of the THAC and 2@ hit ran(e3
coluns# so that for each character class &e
have all the relevant inforation in one
place. "t should be noted that the
or(ani%ation of the tables has been re&orked#
since in soe cases in particular for the
Monk/ advanceent in THAC does not
correspond to advanceent in savin( thro&s.
-urtherore# the coluns of the savin( thro&s
are no& disposed in order of precedenceof
the save# fro left to ri(ht# so that if ore than
one cate(or' applies# the first fro the left
takes precedence e.(. a save vs. pol!morph
"and is done on the "and colun# not on
