You may have heard of the biodiversity report justreleased by IPBES warning about one million species atrisk of extinction. The Intergovernmental Science-PolicyPlatform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services(IPBES), an independent intergovernmental bodyestablished in 2012, has added Ecological Footprint andbiocapacity metrics to its list of Core Indicators. Itsrecent reports for Europe and Central Asia, Asia and thePacific, Africa, and the Americas, all include EcologicalFootprint and biocapacity trends in both the fulldocument and the summary for policy makers. UsingFootprint data, IPBES recognizes as a scientifically “wellestablished” trend that countries with an ecologicaldeficit put tremendous pressure on resource securityand biodiversity outside of their borders.

This question may become commonplace if the Desti-MED initiative in 13 protected areas in theMediterranean region grows into the new standard forassessing tourism options. After all, more and morevacationers care about reducing their Footprint whileenjoying a destination. A summary of the first pilot tests, featuring ecotourism packages in Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Greece that implemented recommendationsgenerated from Ecological Footprint insights, is nowavailable. Resource security enables lasting human development.Yet current development is eroding this very resourcebase. As explained in our new research paper publishedin the journal Sustainability, the pervasive depletion ofthe biosphere is barely registering financially for high-income urbanites. Those communities and their decisionmakers lack meaningful feedback loops that could helpcorrect the situation. Meanwhile, low-income countrieswith biocapacity deficits are caught in the “ecologicalpoverty trap:” not only do they lack the natural resourcesbut they also do not have the purchasing power to buyadditional resources. For poverty eradication and SDGsto succeed, resource security needs primary attention. The paper shows how this is possible and why it isbeneficial. READ MORE
