Multicultural Arts Victoria is veryaware that international connectivityis a key aspect for increasing cultural

diplomacy and opportunities for local artists.MAV believes in the benefits of escalating theprofile and presence of culturally diverse artistsfrom Australia internationally and activelydevelops strategic partnerships and programs topromote high quality culturally diverseAustralian art at an international level.

Arts and Performance Festivals all over theworld have over the years have built up astrong artistic environment and tremendousfollowing. They have become more than eventsthat provide the artists as well as the audiencesan opportunity to get together to promote theirindividual styles of performance, exchangeideas, discover and promote new talents. Theyhave become major cultural tourism initiativesfor the cities and countries in which they areheld. Most importantly, they serve to educate, strengthen and develop international culturalrelations, creating positive dialogue as well aslong-term markets for cultural exchange.

MAV has supported artists to travel to far partsof the globe including Germany, Ethiopia, Asia,Spain and Chile to participate in events andfestivals. MAV recently has been involved in twointernational festivals- one a very establishedfestival Santiago A Mil Festival in Chile and anew budding contemporary arts festival theMelaka Arts and Performance Festival inMalaysia.

The Melaka Art and Performance Festival (MAPFEST) is a new annual event held in Novemberand is initiating a long-term relationship withTony Yap Company (TYC) Australia inpartnership with Multicultural Arts Victoria. Ithas been endorsed by the Chief Minister ofMelaka and the Federal Minister of Culture andTourism. Melaka’s recent UNESCO WorldHeritage City status is the core of the focus ofthis arts driven festival and taps into the greatpotential for Australians as ambassadorsthrough the arts. It will build strong artistic andcollaborative links in the region. The tourismindustry is fast growing in Melaka since WorldHeritage City status and the festival is seen asan opportunity to build links.

MAP FEST is also building partnerships with thebusiness sector in Malaysia, gainingsponsorships and collaborative relationships.TYC in partnership with MAV also initiatedrelationships with the Australia-MalaysiaInstitute (AMI) and Australian Embassy inMalaysia through the Melaka festival.

MAP Fest provides an ideal platform for thecelebration of Australia’s cultural diversity andexcellence in the performing arts. TYCpartnership has a shared long-termed visionand endeavour to connect with its diverse localcommunities and support independent artmaking. It has the potential to foster greaterpositive exchange and understanding of diversepractices and beliefs through the arts.

Santiago A Mil is a month long extravaganza ofstreet theatre, music and entertainment inChiles capital. The festival, now in its 18th year, brought over 70 cultural events, from Chile andaround the world, to the streets of Santiago –many completely free. One of these was ourvery own Melbourne Ska Orchestra inpartnership with MAV. Ten talented Melbournemusicians travelled to Chile to present threeconcerts across the City and one Australia DayConcert at the Australian Ambassadorsresidence in Santiago. Santiago A Mil Festivalalso proved to be an excellent opportunity forcultural exchange between the two nations, with nine members of the local Chileanensemble - the Santiago Downbeat - joiningtheir Australian counterparts to create a mega-

group on stage. It was an excitingcollaboration and built strong links with thelocal arts community, the Festival and AustralianEmbassy in Santiago.

Whilst the Chilean audiences in Santiago(20,000 plus) were enjoying the unique soundof The Melbourne Ska Orchestra, more than5,000 Australia Day punters in Melbournekicked salsa steps with the son of The King ofMambo, Tito Puente Jr, at the Myer Music Bowlalong with John and Nancy Cain (MAV’s patron)Heidi Victoria Parliamentary Secretary to thePremier and Assisting the Premier with the Artsand the Hon Nicholas Kotsiras Minister forMulticultural Affairs & Citizenship.

Mix It Up continues with a series of events inthe Spiegel Garden at the Arts Centre plus theremount of Kutcha Edwards in yuyukatha andour Black Harmony Gathering at the FairfieldAmphitheatre, Premiers Gala Dinner, VivaVictoria just to name a few events to give voiceto our culturally diverse talent in Victoria. Wealso have an exhibition Pilgrimage with John Miat the Fo Guang Yuan gallery with stunningphotography of Tibet.

All these events reinforce MAV’s vital role in thearts and Australia’s standing as a stable, sophisticated, innovative and creative nationwith a rich and diverse culture that bringsexcitement and colour not only to Australianaudiences but to international audiences too.

stage. His backing band, Salcedo, rocked theroof of the Bowl and was comprised of allAustralian based musicians. Puente Jr alsooffered kind words of support andencouragement for donations toward theflood relief appeal, showing real concern forVictorians and Queenslanders alike.

From the minute DJ and MC Saul Zavarcetook to the stage, the classic mambo andsalsa rhythms did not stop flowing for overtwo hours. The local talent really stepped upto the plate with passionate music and danceperformances that left the audience literallybegging for more.

Highlights in the first set included thesupremely polished 70’s Latin rhythms ofMelbourne favourites Orquesta Del Barrio.Lead by the charismatic Gulaberto Casas, DelBarrio have been growing their fanbase onthe club and festival circuit since 1994 withtheir unique and infectious Afro-Caribbeanand Latin sound. Ray Barreto, Ruben Blades,Celia Cruz, El Gran Combo, and Tito Puenteare just some of the artists that inspire theirmusic.

Del Barrio’s special guest vocalist, thestunning Ileana Posas, belted out a couple of

“That was the best concert I’ve everseen at the Bowl. Totally awesome. Ididn’t want to stop dancing.”

“I can’t believe it was free. I wish wecould party Latino style like this everyweek.”

“Viva Australia Day – Latino style!”

Over 5000 excited punters pouredthrough the gates of the Sidney MyerMusic Bowl this Australia Day to join

in one of the biggest parties MAV has everthrown!

The star of the show was international guest,Tito Puente Jr, who delivered a dynamicperformance that did justice to his latefather’s prolific musical legacy. From theSpanish Quarter of Harlem, New York, TitoPuente (senior) had a career that spannedover 50 years and brought Latin Americanrhythms to millions of people worldwide, including Melbourne. His son has workedhard to sustain the joy of his father’s musicsince his passing in 2000, and is now aninternationally touring artist in his own right.

Puente Jr loved connecting with the localtalent and showed a very keen interest inusing his profile to support the locals on

songs to prove that her talent is enduringand worthy of such a prestigious stage. Acelebrity in her home country of El Salvador,Ileana has been in inspiration to otherpolitical refugees in the local Latincommunity since migrating to Australia.

Talented local Cuban talent, Aloy Junco, alsohelped warm the crowd up at the start of theshow with a Salsa lesson. They didn’t needmuch more encouragement, from the firstinstance, the crowd filled the dancefloor toenjoy the live sounds but it was well worthsitting down between bands. For lovers ofdance, Mambo at the Bowl! was a hit. Twoof Melbourne’s hottest salsa companies –Spin City Dance and Melbourne Salsa gracedthe stage with fully choreographed routinesincluding professional duets and advancedtroupes. From stunning, sparkly pinkcostumes to James Bond style suspendersand hats, the glitz and glamour by our localdancers really raised the barr!

Beyond the stage, a range of cultural stallsand food vendors selected from Melbourne’svibrant Latin and Central Americancommunities offered everything from churrosto Peruvian finger puppets, and fromBrazilian BBQ to Colombian pottery.

In December 2010 MAV launched anew human rights festival. Righteouswas held at Signal youth space on

Northbank over two days had twocomponents. Rights at the Round Tablewas a forum held to address the wayhuman rights affects the First Australians, newly arrived Australians, women andhow it applies to us on a daily basis.Esteemed guest speakers Robbie Thorpeof the First Nations, Akoch Manhiem, newAustralian with a Sudanese backgroundand and Dr Dianne Sisely, the inauguralDirector of the Australian Centre forHuman Rights lead the discussions withinput from special youth speakers TyroneBean and Emmanuel Majok. There weretwo strong themes that emerged from thegroup. The newly arrived Australians werevery surprised at the lack of availability ofinformation on the First Australians. Theywere also opposed to the term ‘refugee’being used to describe them, even whenthey were no longer refugees and evenhave Australian citizenship as spoken byAkoch Manhiem. They feel that thiscontinuously prevents them frombecoming part of society. Other audiencemembers felt that they were largelyuninformed about most human rightsissues.

The two youth speakers, Emmanuel andTyrone were speaking as a final outcometo a project they had both participated inseveral months earlier. Multicultural ArtsVictoria in partnership with Key Change

Music took a group of five young peoplefrom culturally diverse backgrounds toSouth Africa to explore multiculturalism, the effects of racial segregation and thesimilarity between our histories. Thesetwo young leaders of their communitiesspoke of racial stereotypes and how theyfeel as young people representing theirculture in Australia’s diversifyingpopulation.

Khaled Abdulwahab who was also part ofthe South Africa project hosted the forumwith the great skill of a performer andcommunity leader. As a group, theaudience and speakers created their ownbill of rights to send to the PrimeMinister, demanding that Australiaembrace this notion of having a nationalbill of rights. MASSIVE choir closed theevent with a great performance oforiginally composed songs.

Rights by the River was a krump and hiphop music event held the following day. Astage was built outdoors along the Yarra’sNorthbank and featured a variety of actsencompassing cultural collaborationsfrom the First Australians, Tonga, Samoa,Cook Islands, Niue, Ethiopia, Namibia,Sudan, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Papua NewGuinea, Lebanon, Rwanda, Haiti, theCaribbean, the Philippines, the USA,Chile and Anglo Australia. Krump crewRoyal Fam led a krump workshop tobegin the event. Youth projectsCornerstone, MASSIVE and Believe in the

Beat showcased the hard work that they hadput in all year, supporting other emergingartists like Angeezy and Culture Connect.Grrilla Step headlined the event as the sunwent down over the city, mixing the tribalpercussion of Papua New Guinean log drumswith the hip hop and krump beats of DJDexter. The Santiago A Mil festival isone of Chile’s most importantcultural celebrations and offered

an exciting opportunity to promoteAustralia in the Latin American regionthrough arts and culture. The tour of theMelbourne Ska Orchestra to differentlocations across Santiago profiling worldmusic with Ska Across the Worldconnected strongly with the diverse localChilean community, and mirroredAustralia’s success in implementingmulticultural policy through the arts. Thelarge audiences danced the night awayand yelled for more at the end of eachperformance. Melbourne Ska Orchestrawere loved by the Chileans!

“We (Melbourne Ska Orchestra) firstworked with MAV in 2007 on Ska-Africa- a bold idea hatched by MAV (thanksAnita) to fuse African themes and artistswith traditional Jamaican Music. It was aspectacular successful event. Given theenormity of the Melbourne Ska Orchestrawe had no expectation to ever playoutside our home city (even interstate). But, thanks to MAV, we have theopportunity to take our love of JamaicanSka and Jazz to South America (Chile tobe exact) as part of a ‘ska all over theworld’ showcase of Melbournemulticultural talent. I know that theentire MSO sees this as a vindication ofthe time and effort we have put in due toour love of the music (lord knows there'sno money in it). On behalf of NickyBomba and the entire MSO, thanks Jilland everyone at MAV.”
