Product Instructions These fluency fact cards (Candy edition) are designed to be used at a fluency center or independent work station. Students should ideally work with a fluency partner to read and give feedback to each other on their fluent (or not-so-fluent) reading of the candy facts. The most important component of this resource is the repeated readings of the facts…at least three times. Fluency expert, Timothy Rasinski, says a large majority of increasing fluency is having opportunities to practice the same text more than once or twice. (Rasinski, 2014.) *see Fluency Research Base (p.3).

There are two sets of cards, for a total of 36 cards. However, they are divided into two sets of 18 because I have created a front & back comprehension check for the first and second set of 18 facts.. The cover card and directions card should be the first and second card in the set when assembled.

I printed the fact cards on white cardstock. They are numbered and have a hole-punch guide at the top. Cut them apart and print copies of each set’s corresponding assessment (Artifact Sheet).. Answer keys are also provided. Place the cards & assessment in your fluency center. Give feedback to students on the Artifact Sheet. © 2014, Hello Literacy

Fluency Research Base There is a long and strong research base for the explicit teaching and practice of fluency. Students need to know, be taught and learn the different strategies that fluent readers use and non-fluent readers don’t use. Students need to learn that fluent reading frees up cognitive space leaving room to think about the reading. Less time and energy to decode the words leaves more time and energy to think about what the words mean. The strategy of repeated readings is also well documented in the research and has been for many years. The research base of feedback is also well documented, if students can get corrective feedback from their peers after each read, then each read after that will be more fluent than the last. Research also shows that students do not read enough nonfiction. Nonfiction text can be difficult to understand because of the amount of information given on any one page. Use these cards to have students practice what they are learning by taking notes, jots and sketches about what is learned from each card.

1

Candy, also called sweets, is a confection that uses sugar as its main ingredient. Candies

include chocolate, chewing gum and sugar candy. Candy is a favorite food all over the

world.

2

Cotton candy was invented by a dentist in 1897 when he

and John C. Wharton patented the “electric candy machine.” Originally called

Fairy Floss, it was an instant success with the public.

3

Most of the candy in Candy Forest including the Chocolate River used in the movie, Willy Wonka and the

Chocolate Factory are edible because the director wanted it to look realistic.

4

The creator of the world’s most popular candy bar, the

Snickers bar, was Frank Mars. The name of the

candy bar came from his horse, Snickers.

5

The Mars candy company is still family owned and

produce other candy bars like 3 Muskateers, Skittles,

Dove Chocolate, Milky Way, Starburst and Twix.

6

Apparently, the average German candy lover eats more than twice as much chocolate per year than the average American chocolate lover, eating 114 bars per year

compared to 51.

7 Chocolate is dangerous to dogs and many die from

consuming chocolate. Humans can also die of chocolate poisoning especially elderly

people whose digestive systems are weak..

8

Although cavemen probably did not eat Twizzlers and Butterfingers, honey is a naturally sweet treat, and has been a favorite sweet snack throughout history.

9

According to the National Confectioners Association,

the ancient Egyptians, Arabs and Chinese candied their nuts using honey; an early

form of candy.

10

The Mayans and Aztecs both prized the cocoa bean as “food from the gods.” In 1519, Spanish explorers in

Mexico discovered the cacao tree and chocolate made its

way to Europe.

11

People in England and the American colonies enjoyed boiled sugar candy in the

17th century, but hard candy like peppermints and lemon drops weren’t popular until

the 19th century.

12

Candy is made by dissolving sugar in water by heating it up. Hot temperatures make hard candy, medium temps make soft candy and cool temps make chewy candy.

Halloween, Easter, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. 50% of

kids say chocolate is their favorite candy at Halloween.

14

50% of kids say chocolate is their favorite candy at

Halloween. 24% of kids like fruity candy and 10% the kids like gum. Trick or treating is how most kids get Halloween

candy.

15

The other 15% of kids say fruit, salty snacks and baked goods were at the bottom of

their favorite Halloween candy list. “Just pass out candy…that’s what kids

really want!” said one kid.

16

Also, 90% of parents admit that they sneak goodies from their kids’ trick or treat bags. And, more kids sneak candy

to school in the days following Halloween than any other

time of year.
